Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's raining here today. We usually just curl up and wait for it to away :-). I might spin at lunch, but would have to leave class early for a meeting and I hate doing that. I could run but the treadmills will be packed due to the rain. So funny how wussy I am. When I lived in Dublin I never thought twice about rain. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() boxerdogfriend - 2012-05-06 8:00 PM When you guys go walking/hiking, do you track it as a run workout or sports workout? I feel like I shouldn't track it as a run, yet I do want to get an idea of the mileage on the monthly/weekly reports - especially since I can see myself doing a decent amount of hiking this summer, and am thinking of participating in a 13 mile hike later in the year that takes both trail runners and walking hikers. When I was training for my XC ski race, I logged XC skiing separately from running or biking. But I used running as part of my XC ski training (mostly due to lack of snow!)
boxerdogfriend - 2012-05-06 8:00 PM The following may contain more information than you want to know - proceed with caution: My run time is improving, but I am feeling a bit like a fraud sometimes, trying to do this. I AM SLOW!! And weak! ...and I don't even know how to swim yet!! (good thing my sprint has a 300 yard pool swim). So I'm starting to stress about this. I am also quite worried about the fact that I am quite large chested ( I am a 36 DDD - YES, with THREE D's), and I have no idea what I am going to wear that can go in the pool and support me on the run. I wear an underwire bra, a snapping "regular shape" sports bra, AND a racerback compression bra, all three at the same time, to run. I don't think that's going to work in the pool. It seems trivial, but it's stopped me from fitness endeavors before, and I don't want it to stop me anymore. (Reduction will happen after I have kids!) I know that the truth is that none of the fitness time I've logged would've happened if I hadn't signed up for this sprint triathlon, and even if I am dead last, "it's faster than the guy on the couch" ...and I know what the answer is: "keep going", "it will come with time", etc etc, and I know it's all true - but I still feel like I don't even want people to know what I'm trying to do because I just do not fit that mold right now. Ok - just expressing, that's all! I'm not at all thinking of giving up, by any means. These concerns will not stop me, but I do need to face them, recognize them, and move on! I'm realizing this is going to be almost as mental as it is physical (or maybe more?) Regarding the first part... I use a tri top sports bra (kind of like this one) under a tri top singlet that has a built-in sports bra (similar to this). If you wanted to do 3 layers, perhaps you could do 2 tri top sports bras under a tri top singlet. And of course, tri shorts on the bottom! I've found that tri-specific clothing tends to be snugger than running clothes, so maybe you could just get away with two layers. In any case, these things are meant to be both swum and run in! I actually like the tri stuff better because it holds the "ladies" in better (34D here) even if it's raining or you get uber sweaty. Regarding the rest, just one foot in front of the other, and pretty soon, you realize you DO fit into the mold |

Tonight I'm taking a break from tri sports and only have some yoga and lifting planned. Though, I did bike to work, and am planning on biking to the gym, then to dinner, then home tonight. So I guess I'm not taking a break from tri sports after all So, I guess my morning workout today was a bike ride to work! |

Bit of a disappointing finish for me today. 3 minutes slower than hollywood a month ago on an easier course. Legs just didnt have it after about mile 7. Still any half marathon finish is worth celebrating. Had a founders ale and a local Ohioan IPA before dinner. There may be more in my future as the night is still young ![]() Sorry to hear that you didn't finish the race as fast as you wanted. But think of it this way - you got to enjoy the scenery of the great state of Ohio a little longer! Hope you enjoyed the beer - founders is one of my favs! Their IPA is outstanding!!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Moonrocket - 2012-05-05 8:56 PM My hill climbing clinic today kicked my butt! I think it was the hardest workout I've done in years. I really need to work on hills. I learned so much though. We did three repeats on a 4ish mile long hill that ended with a big incline. The first time I didn't even make it up the hill. After making some good adjustments I made it up the second two times we did it. I am going to be sore though! Some of the key things the teacher focused on were finding a good rhythm and keeping it up. Not just dropping gears and spinning- but focusing more on holding your rhythm. He also spoke a lot about powering your foot through the bottom of the pedal to get more power. He spent a bunch of time showing me how to push my bike to the opposite side of the foot that was down when standing that really helped my ability to climb while standing. I feel exhausted, but also excited to get back out there and get up the hill faster! So glad to hear that what you learned at the clinic made going up all those hills worth it. I'd love some more thoughts and suggestions because I really need to work on my climbing. I have a century coming up in August with 4000 feet of elevation gain. I can use all the help I can get! |

Yeah, there will be super fit, super fast studs at the races, but most of the people there are just ordinary people trying to live a healthy lifestyle and come in all shapes and sizes. And there will be plenty of people just like you, trying to finish. So just keep up the good work and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised come race day |

I'm realizing this is going to be almost as mental as it is physical (or maybe more?) OK - I can't comment on the jogging bra situation... but I do want to weigh in on your post I can totally empathize. In your post you mentioned "I don't even want people to know what I'm trying to do because I just do not fit that mold right now." Here is the thing - when you get off the couch and put in the time to exercise - you get to create your own mold. Truth is - there are plenty of people on this site and even in this forum who are racing/competing at a totally different level... Neither you or I for that matter will ever fit into their mold. So, you need to create your own mold. All that effort is having a huge impact on you and while the slow pace is tough and frustrating, you've made a ton of progress. It's that progress that defines you as an athlete - not how your times compare to someone elses. I realize how tough the going is for you right now. It took me more than 5 months of aqua jogging in the pool before I could even run a mile on land... and the snail's pace of the progress drove me nuts. But I latched onto the people in my group (thanks again Kevin and Thor) and used their stories to inspire me to keep going. Now, the progress that I'm making is at a quicker pace but I still have so far to go. The same is true to you. Find your inspiration where ever you can find it - an improved time (even if it's a second faster), a week of consistant workouts, a kind word from a co-worker who notices the effects of the hard work you are doing, and from the stories of your fellow athletes (emphasis on the word "fellow). One day, people will be reading your posts and your success will inspire them. Until then - feel free to reach out for support. There are plenty of people who will give it to you because at some point in time they have been right in your shoes doing the hard work. Fight the fight, finish the race, keep the faith! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's race week for me and I'm pumped and a bit worried. I just realized that my son's sub scout overnight is the night before the event, so I will probably only get 5-6 hours of sleep before having to drive more more than 2 hours despite the fact that the race is only 5 miles from my house... Damn. With the goal of making the best out of a tough situation, I'd like some advice on transition. I figure I could shave 2 minutes of my time if I really improve my approach. I plan on practicing each day with the hope of taking out the guess work... but I've love your suggestions. So, my goal of the race is to finish as quickly as my sore and sleep depraved body will allow but I still want to do well. Any suggestions as to which beer I should buy to motivate myself druing the race and enjoy after crossing the finish line would be much appreciated!

Just try to be as organised as possible and know what you are going to do and when. Also reduce your stuff down to what you really need and practice, practice, practice using those things. It is best to practice a transition at the end of a training session so you can get used to how it feels trying to put on gear while potentially wet, tired and shaky! Don't know what else to suggest as far as making it faster. Just try to stay calm and focused. My issue is always getting my feet into shoes while I am shaking from the effort of the previous leg! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Napa Valley race was fun as usual. We camped Friday through Monday with my 3 year old grandson and raced on Sunday. Not sure if that hurt or helped but I don't think it made much of a difference either way. The course was different than last year so I can't really compare the two. The swim was longer, the bike was the same but with more hills, and the run was mile longer. Again the hills killed me...did I mention the 30 mile an hour wind gust and the hills? Not sure how I feel about this race. I didn't do horrible but I feel I should have done better especially on the run. I did lead the BOP. Oh and I did get first in my age group for T1..tee hee gotta take the victories where I can. My goal was to not fear the hills and for the most part I think I handled them to the best of my ability. The run was a different story. My legs were tired and those same hills that we just rode we had to run. There is so much more I can do in training to prepare for these. The strength training off season helped but I think I need to maintain that during the season. Hitting the gym tomorrow again. Ugh guess I am going to have to join you early risers and get something done before I leave at 6:15 in the morning. Thanks for the push! |

Even slower progress, and much more pain involved, but it will come, and it is so rewarding seeing progress. Keep at it. And while you were leading the BOP - you were probably also motivating the MOPers because they knew if they slowed down at you - you were probably gonna run over them...
