Scott-Crushing dreams? It's interesting and a little scary to see your competative side. I know you'll totally kick butt though! BTW, You are a bad influence-I've already decided I could do the sprint in June. I'll let you know when I sign up.

Troy-I still haven't tried aero and I have nothing but my stopwatch but I'm pretty sure I've never gone that fast. Part of my usual route is an out and back along 3 canal locks with a lot of climbing on the way up and pretty fast downhill on the way back. I usually hit top gear and stop pedaling when I no longer feel resistance. I also get down in the drops-then I get nervous and tap the brakes as there's a pretty good curve at the bottom. I'm afraid I'm going to go over the handle bars and end up in the canal. The water landing might help break my fall but the water quality could cause a mutation.Foot in mouth

Ashley-I'm glad your groin is ok and we don't have to watch it anymore.Tongue out

Matt-Glad to hear from you and the long post totally makes up for your abscence. Love the shirt idea. You should totally go for it and post pics!

So I got a good pool workout in last night. Ashley had inspired me to try his sprint workouts and I swam until I almost threw up. I'm slow but this was only my third time with the workout and my times did improve some already.

Today I went for a bike ride and got a flat right at the end. I tried pumping some air in to ride home but it deflated really fast and I was worried about my rim. I had a spare but I was 3 blocks from home so I decided to walk it. I felt like a dweeb because my cleats made so much noise so I took them off and walked barefoot. I'm sure I looked much cooler-especially when I finally remembered to remove my helmet. Oh well-I guess the only people who think triathletes are cool are other triathletes.

Hope everyone has a great training day!!

Can anyone identify what's wrong with my tire? I'm hoping to fix it myself because I don't have a lot of money to drop at the LBS. I've changed a lot of flats (sadly I usually flat them myself taking my floor pump on and off-this is my first road flat) but I've never had this happen. It's not pinched. I always check. It's just bulging right near the stem. I hope the pic is ok.

Nicole,  I can't quite tell from the pic you posted.  Is the rim bent at all?  or is it just the tire?

Nicole, did you try letting the air out and filling it again? It looks like the tube did not get inserted right into the tire when you applied air. Thats a common thing. Let it all out and try again. Make sure the tube is completely inside of the tire. You can always blow a little air into the tube before you stick it in the tire. That can help alignment. I'm going to bed. Let me know if that worked.

I'll follow up with you in the morning.

Scott-I can't see that it's bent but I'm worried I might have bent the rim because it took me a few minutes to realize that my ride was bumpier because it was flat.

Ashley-I went to bed shortly after I posted last night. I did check around the edges before I inflated it and deflated and re-inflated several times. I'm going to try to take it apart and redo it tonight but I don't really see how it will help. I'm just hoping I screwed it up somehow. Otherwise I'll be riding the SO's steel frame 10 speed from 1975 for a while. It sucks but it does give me a decent workout.

I can't tell from that picture, Nicole ... my view tells me it's mostly tire/tube, but if you've already deflated and reflated (new word!) a number of times, I fear it could be the rim ... which should be easily straightened for minimal cost at the LBS.  Also ... I never liked descending in the drops. I find descending on the aero bars feels much more in control. I've already become quite adept at finding the brake or shifting while keeping my other hand still on the aero bars. Granted, my response time, should I need to brake, is diminished by a second or two.

****************

I slept in today after two solid workouts yesterday. I was the only one to show up for Masters Swim, and my coach gave me a solid workout. The toughest of the sets was 3 x (2 x 50 on :45) ... with a :30 second rest in between each of the 3. I was only getting a couple of seconds of rest in between those 50s, so it was a real heart pumper.

I ended up going to bed at 8pm which allowed me 10 full hours of sleep. It felt great. Just what I should be doing during my taper!  I'll be running easy tomorrow ... first run in a week. Hopefully my ankle will allow it.

Thanks, Troy. The minimal cost part is a relief. I was in VT yesterday and saw a guy ducking into a port a potty when I was driving by St. Mike's. Wrong campus but it made me think of you.Wink

Good morning, all.

Nicole, your LBS should examine your rim for free. I hope it is not bent but who knows. Crap happens.

Went out for a 4 mile run yesterday at a slow pace. I didn't want to try and set a PR after being off for 2 weeks with no run. Took me 34:57 which is a 8:43 avg. Legs feel okay today. I can tell its been awhile-legs/hammies are a little tight. Nothing a little stretching won't fix. Felt good to get back out there.

I see a swim coming my way this afternoon. I see a big difference in my endurance. I need to work on my speed. I'm going to try and throw in some 400 yd sprints to monitor my times. I did it in 7:39 my last race so i want to see what kind of improvements/regressions I have made. I might wait until 6/1- give these intervals 2 months to work magic.

I'm still evaluating the ole race schedule. My second tri of the season is eluding me. There are some local tris in June, July, and Sept. I think I might switch my focus to those and get some more experience before I head out for Oly and wet suit races. I don't need to cram in everything the first year. Everything is subject to change.

What is everyone doing today??

We were thinking about taking a ride on the 26th at around 2:30 or so.  What do you say?  It's only a few days before the big race.

@Nicole:

Not sure what LBS shop you use.  I've been really impressed with these guys - reasonable and fast turn-around:

299 Ontario Street
Cohoes, NY 12047
(518) 238-2453

For me - it's a 3.5 mile race in downtown Albany this evening, and tomorrow an eye-doc follow-up.  Assuming the eye-doc gives me thumbs up, I plan to schedule my Tri's.  I am going to do the Fronhoffer Oly I hope!

Ugh. That's the DAY before the big race ... and the Essex Invitational that my daughter finally qualified for. No ride for me that day. Tom and I are talking about a ride this Saturday if you're interested ... it'll be pretty mellow, though.

Absolutely. Why get smoked by only one fast guy? I don't want to limit myself. Seriously though, the more the merrier. Just to warn you though, I'm slooooooooooooooooooooooooow. No need to ride my pace. I just might be an hour or so behind you guys

Ha! Cross post!

Ben-Thanks for posting this. I was debating it but had pretty much decided that I was going to give them a chance. I bought innertubes there recently and they seemed nice. I'm glad to hear they know what they're doing also. The Bike Barn is close to my house. You're not in Waterford too are you? How weird would it be if we lived in the same town?

I thought the race was on Monday the 28th for some reason.  I'm working till 5:30 or so this Saturday.  I booked myself late because My family and I are staying over in Stowe after the race and I'm playing hooky on Monday.  We'll get this group ride together.  Sounds like fun.

Troy- I won't be up that day but am there fairly regularly. Maybe next time. I used to do a cross country meet every year that was called the Essex Invitational in high school. It was in the fall though.

I know that's my third post in the space of a few minutes so I'll shut up now.

Oh-and Ashley-I'm swimming tonight.

Ok, now I'll shut up.

Maybe but I didn't really have any glory then either. I used to hide out in the bathrooms and smoke after meets and my performance showed it. I was a very bad teenager.

Today has been a good day! Got up and banged out my swim prior to 7 am, 10x100s in 1:45 each and my 10x50s in 50 each (which for me is a very good start to the day. Then I just hit up the Columbia Triathlon run course(6 miles) for lunch time on fresh legs in under an hour(which for my slow butt was really moving, I'm probably closer to an 11 min average especially on this hilly course) So now I'm really regretting not signing up. Grrrr!

It's 500 meters not yards.  And I believe the ice has just melted.  Wink

All joking aside.  It is the earliest one that I know of that is run up here.  I would have started weeks ago if there was a race.
