Big Red is a Raleigh and was my first bike since I had a Minnie Mouse one with training wheels. Big Red is a male and a very tough one at that. He's more on the serious side and very mature and focused on safety. My current racing bike is a Trek Lexa S named Dottie. She's is a fast, fun, fearless, silly gal who is always asking for attention. I love bikes so much! Here's Dottie I like Dottie... she looks fast! |

That's what I get for buying a floor pump at Target. It screwed up that presta valve quicker than poop. Looks like ill be making a trip to the LBS for a new tube and a proper floor pump. |

In not-quite-triathlon-related news, attended a great free bike clinic tonight. Feel better prepared to take on longer rides especially since I could fix a flat tire now Now if I could just get a better fit on my bike... |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Todd's Tri Turtles - (Beginners, Sprint, 5K, 10K) - CLOSED Loving the bikes everyone and Beth what a handsome young man you have. Mike if you don't know how or feel comfortable changing out a tube, this is your chance to take the wheel with you and have them show you the best / easiest way to change it. If you are already versed then disregard. Dawn glad to hear you are on the mend and nice job seeking out some training and learning from it. I had to learn by trial and error and cost myself two tubes in the process (pinch flat and cut the bottom of the stem once). Jason, nice job of pushing through and completing the workout. Like I said it gets easier each time. I never thought I would swim a mile in a workout and now I don't like showing up to do less than 1800, whether it's sets or all at once. You will get there and your hard work will get you there quicker than you think. Corbet, I loved the story, my question is did you pop up quick and look around to see who saw you |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Todd's Tri Turtles - (Beginners, Sprint, 5K, 10K) - CLOSED Alright Turtles, so I want to let everyone know that my first race of the season is here. I will be leaving out tomorrow afternoon for the Dallas area to COMPLETE my first Olympic Distance Tri. I am really exicted, but a little aggavated because my back has been acting up, but hopefully the taper, days off, and some stretching works it out by Sunday Morning. I will try to get on my wife's Kindle or something while I'm there to communicate with yall. I can tell you all that this is probably the first time that I have shown up to any race feeling like I truly put in the work. Like I have told yall before I just used to do what I needed to in order to finish the race. I know I'm not going to be close to a podium spot being the happy turtle I am, but I hope to have a different day / feel about the day at this event. I am not exactly where I would like to be and know it will likely take some walking to finish, but I'm fine with that. Now is when I have to practice what I preach and just truly enjoy the day for what it is. It's Turtle Time! |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Todd's Tri Turtles - (Beginners, Sprint, 5K, 10K) - CLOSED Ok, now for the Challenge and this one is for a month, but easily do able by every single Turtle in the Group. Increase your monthly totals in all three disciplines (Swim, Bike, Run) by some margin over your totals from last month (May). The only exception would be those with zero swim and still no place to swim. I believe everyone has some form of a bike to ride and we all have a road to walk / run on. You just need to increase in each for the month of June over May by some distance. I know everyone can do this. |

Member 451 Gold Coast, Australia | Subject: RE: Todd's Tri Turtles - (Beginners, Sprint, 5K, 10K) - CLOSED Originally posted by Usulsuspct So today I started week 2 of the 0 to 1650 program and quite honestly was terrified about the 1x200 yards lead in (followed by 4x100). 8 lengths of the pool without stopping?! - no way / cant be done Well I am happy to say that it can albeit slowly (and rather strange looking I'm sure!) I found that breaking it down to 50 yard distances in my head made it a little less daunting. When I finished the 200 the 100s felt like they were becoming the "new 50s" which was a great feeling. I am slowly putting some of the pieces of the lessons and online reading about swimming together, while I cant quite string it altogether at the same time occasionally it feels "right". One bit of info that helped me survive today was to try and remain relaxed. An issue I would often run into is feeling like I was running out of air which in turn would cause me to tense up only making the oxygen consumption worse. If I can get relaxed things seem to settle down and I don't feel like I am swimming into a tsunami wearing a pair of boots with a baby panda on my back. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be w2d2 hopefully it goes as well (or better) than today! Great to hear you're making progress in the pool. Relaxing is the key component, but it's so counter-intuitive...every part of you is shouting "kick/paddle/flail harder or you'll sink!" when really you need to pause, relax, and float. Easy to say, hard to do. Sounds like you're already half way there, though, so i reckon you'll be 1650-ing in no time! |

I find when the distance increases it actually gets easier to relax because you can get into a rhythm and stop thinking quite so much. I'm finishing week 1 today (in about 40 minutes actually) and am excited to see some progress! Keep up the great work! |

Veteran 727 Baltimore Area | Subject: RE: Todd's Tri Turtles - (Beginners, Sprint, 5K, 10K) - CLOSED Biking / spinning question: Even though I am not cleared yet to ride, I have serious reservations about biking outside just yet. After shattering my ankle a year ago, the thought of wiping out again is never far from my mind. found two biking training plans: BT has a 3 month “Beginner Cycling Training” program. This plan is specifically created with the overweight person in mind who is looking for a no-impact weight loss plan to start losing the pounds and getting fit. The plan is 3 month’s long. Workout is 5 to 6 days per week, some are short to medium workouts. At least one day is on the trainer. Until I get cleared or I get past my fear to heading back out there, I was thinking of doing this but all on a trainer. http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1671 Selene Yeager's (Bicycling Magazine's Fit Chick) has the 8-Week Weight Loss Cycling Program http://www.box.net/shared/avkj6vvcwo Would it be better to just stick to spin classes for now? What I've found (and this is largely from being on the forums here and asking questions) is that outside > trainer > spin bike > stationary bike > recumbent bike > nothing. The trainer is the next best thing to being outside because you're on your own bike and getting comfortable with it. That said, there's nothing wrong with spin classes either. I think as long as you're riding you'll be fine improving your fitness and getting the time in. Good luck and I hope you get better soon! |

In swimming as in so many other things, it's much harder to get started than to carry on. Going 0 to 100 is harder than going 100 to 800, which is harder than going 800 to 1650. To relax, remember that when you are swimming, oxygen is no more than three inches away. Just a little turn of the head, and you can breathe. |

Member 163 | Subject: RE: Todd's Tri Turtles - (Beginners, Sprint, 5K, 10K) - CLOSED Ran a 5K today. Goal time was 24:04, a 7:45 pace, with a stretch goal of 7:30 pace. I timed myself at 24:05, which is right where I wanted to be. The official time was six seconds longer - the time to get to the start line. So I made goal or close, depending on how you look at it. Either way, I'm where I wanted to be, more or less. Also :30 faster than my previous personal best, which is OK for a 52-year-old. |
