Master 1548 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? markmark - 2008-12-02 8:20 AM Morning, did the rocky club sprint on the weekend and the water leg wasn't too bad even for a first timer, fairly shallow not much in the way of current or swell, actually nothing reckon you'll do it easy same as a pool swim just no black line
X 2, the OWS portion of both Rockingham and Waikiki tris is gorgeous, its a bay so I've never seen any rough water there. You'll be fine Daisymouse!

Expert 859 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? I got a wetsuit on eBay today so now I have NO EXCUSE for not going for early morning swims. Still it'll take a week to arrive....... we practised deep water starts last night, but last year they started on the beach at Rockingham so might need to have a go at hurdling some waves heading for page three

I doubt you'll see any waves at Rockingham! The few times I've done Rocky & Waikiki the water has been flat like a mirror I think its awesome that you got a wetsuit on Ebay. Was it cheaper than normal? Was it secondhand? I am planning to hit my husband & family up with a suggestion for a Christmas present - they can all put in and help me buy one!

Expert 859 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? it's not a triathlon wetsuit, but is sleeveless for swimming, 2nd hand it was only $26. It'll do for swimming in the mornings until it gets a bit warmer. I just can't afford a Zoot or 2XU at the moment. Did you see that TWA has increased the temperatures at which you can use a suit to 24 degrees? |

Member 76 Barrow Island, Western Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? Is that right? never having worn a wetty is that a good thing? Noticed the water last week was cool/cold to start with but wasn't too bad once I started swimming, and didn't take your breath away. Had to laugh though there's all the guns sui ted up and then there's me no wetty ready to face the elements SIGH ! |

I've heard that the Ironman/Blue Seventy and the Orca wetsuits are both good. I have no experience with either. I think Runners World stock the Blue Seventy and Total Triathlon stock the Orca. Runners World have some demos to try on so I was thinking of going in there to have a chat to them. A friend of mine has a sleeveless Blue Seventy which she is really happy with.

I think in WA triathlons the main reason people wear wetties is for increased buoyancy and streamline, which significantly impacts on your speed (ie faster!) I'm glad TriWA has increased the temp to 24C

Expert 859 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? I think that the whole bouyancy things is why they've done it; my husband is one of these people who just sinks and loves wearing a wetsuit because he doesn't have to fight to stay floating. If more people feel safer and happier in the water, more people will do tris. I would think there's very few times a year that the water temp exceeds 24 |

Member 76 Barrow Island, Western Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? OK that all makes sense, but do you lose a fair bit of time getting out of a wetsuit as opposed to not wearing one? |

Expert 859 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? I don't know at what distance the trade off between extra speed and time taken to get the damn thing off balances out. Guess it depends if you're going for comfort over speed. At the recent tri at Hilarys, a friend who did it said no-one was wearing one for the short course, but there were a lot for the 750m swim. |

Practice your transitions Like Daisymouse said, they're more important on longer races, most people wear them and you'd be at a disadvantage not to have one.

Member 76 Barrow Island, Western Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? OK sounds fair, looks like I'll have to get one, going to do the Mandurah this weekend without a wetsuit, but I'll have to look into getting one before the next race in January, not keen on coming last again! |

Master 1548 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? Santa came early for me! I am now the proud owner of a Blue Seventy Reaction wetsuit! I'm not allowed to wear it until after Christmas though. So if I do Rocky, I'll be wetsuit-less LOL! Its an entry level suit and it was MUCH cheaper than I thought it was going to be, only $235 from Runners World! I recommend going there. Edited by eurydice79 2008-12-07 6:25 PM |

Expert 859 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? merry christmas Magda! I never thought I'd ever be salivating over a wetsuit, it's gorgeous. Don't know if I'm going to be able to do Rocky as my hip problem has flared up again and running is very painful. Still, I could use the time to improve my swimming which is atrocious. I've never been to Runner's World but I should go as everybody says what a good shop it is, Total Triathlon is just down the road so I usually go there. My birthday is in Feb and I had been hanging out for a waterproof iPod but that wetsuit is lovely. |

Its a pokey little shop but they have heaps of stuff and the people are really helpful and its also quite cheap compared to a lot of other places Plus they're big supporters of the WA Marathon Club and running in WA in general. I get my bike serviced there and have purchased a lot of gear from them.

Member 76 Barrow Island, Western Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? Morning, speaking of good places to get good gear if you're chasing tyres etc have a look at torpedo7 on the net, I've been using them for some time now and they do some really good specials now and then on all sorts of bike bits, bought a wind trainer through them delivered to my door pretty quickly. No good Daisymouse on the hip front,, hoping it gets better soon. Me I get to do my first (finally ) 750m OWS this weekend. catch youse later |

Member 76 Barrow Island, Western Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? Morning DM, what can I say, the OWS for my part was pretty ugly to say the least I suppose that's what happens when you train in the pool, water temp was cold (wetsuit would have been good) but not unbearable, but do you think I could get my head underwater and blow my lungs right out and get a rythmn going? Nope! OH well now I have something else to work on,,,,,,,,, still completed the race (never give up!)and come out not too bad on the land legs. The wind trainer is actually pretty good, although when I first got it the wind bit was loose and kept rubbing making an annoying jingle bells noise, fixed it temporarily with a shoe jammed under it and finally fixed it last week which was simply a matter of pulling it apart with an Allen key and screwdriver in about 15 minutes so it's good now. pleny of adjustment for harder workouts currently on 3. I waited until they came out on special and got it for $130.00 or so plus freight, I think the whole lot delivered was around $170.00 alot cheaper than a Minoura. |

Expert 859 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: Anyone else from WA? Hi Mark your experience sounds pretty familiar, not just with me but with so many race reports I've read. OWS just seems to be so much harder than in a pool, especially the whole rythmn thing. I can swim 1500 easy in the pool but 200 in the sea exhausts me. Like you, just have to work on it. Checked torpedo7, what a good site, they have some nice mag trainers at the moment which don't seem too spendy. I think one would be really useful for those stinking hot days - could set it up under the air-con nicely. It's my birthday in Feb so might ask for one. Feeling very sorry for myself as I've stuffed a lumbar disc, probably lifting my little boy (who's really not that little now). I've never had back problems and drugs aren't helping so I had the bonkers situation of sleeping under the air-con with a heat pack strapped to my back. Luckily I can still swim so trying to be philisophical and planning to spend the running/cyling time working on my stroke. considering doing one on the TI workshops they run in Inglewood with the money I'll get back for my tri training course at Challenge. take it easy |

I find the salt is a lot to cope with too. Keep practising and I am sure it will get better really soon. DM - oh no! I'm really sorry to hear about your back! I hope you feel better soon. How is the hip going? I take it you won't be doing Rockingham this weekend?
