"Since when?  As long as the ammo and gun combine are not easily accessible you're fine.  Ammo does NOT have to be locked up.  My M&P9 is properly stored in a safe, but my ammo is in my sock drawer.  It's also legal to have loaded clips in the same safe as the handgun as long as they're not in the gun itself."

Ammo without a gun is more dangerous than a gun without ammo.

I know 3 people who have learned that the hard way. 1 blew up his hand trying to hit the primer with a hatchet (he was 11), another was trying to pull the projectile off of the round and kaboom (he was an adult), the third had a round in his pocket and tossed those trousers in the washer then the dryer and blamo! (Staff Sergeant).

Basically, ammo just needs to be treated as what it is, an explosive designed to kill. And every weapon should be treated like it is loaded and like the safety is broken.

i store most of my ammo in ammo boxes. you can buy a single caliber in bulk to get ahold of them or look for them on their own. i also keep a few handguns stashed around with extra clips/speed feeds nearby.  CWP and .357 have ammo stored in them at all times; i live alone without children.

if you are talking about a lot of ammo... i suggest getting a dedicated safe for it.  my dad has an entire gun safe dedicated to just ammo. its ridiculous, but i don't own as many firearms/calibers as him.
