I'm sticking with Canon because on the website Don gave me they seem to agree it's the best for novice photographers. I found them on sale and they're mostly in my price range. I'd also have to get a bigger memory card so that adds another $50-100. Canon A620 - 7.1MP, 4x Optical Zoom $230 Canon Powershot SD550 - 7.1MP, 3x Optical zoom $280 Canon A700 - 6MP, 6x Optical Zoom $321 I read on the camera website that MP's are important, but for me it sounded like anything over 5 or so would be good. The higher zoom sounds good though because with my kids I'm not always right in front of them to take their pictures. They all had good customer reviews. I'm waiting for my brother to send me some info he's getting from Consumer Reports now. |

I was all set to go with the smaller compact one, but when I went into the store and actually held them I changed my mind. The 12X zoom on the S12 is awesome - that's what made my decision I think. I figure it will be great when we take pictures of the kids playing sports or in school recitals and stuff like that. The other one had 4X zoom and didn't seem like it got me very close. Of course any of these will be a HUGE improvement over my old camera - an Olympus we got as a wedding present in 1999! They don't even make the memory card it needs anymore. I'm ordering it online so I guess I have to wait until next week to get it, but it's saving me almost $75 doing it that way. I'll post pictures as soon as I get it and figure out how to use it!  |
