Just fininshed my first sprint tri.  While waiting to be released from transition with our bikes, the last Oly biker came in.  Everyone waiting set their bike down and gave her the loudest, hardiest, cheering as she rolled in.

There are all kinds of body types at triathlons. And what is really cool is that "non-typical" body types sometimes do better than the skinny, ripped folks. I got my butt handed to me by a 60 year old woman at my first tri. She was awesome and very inspirational. Don't worry about what you look like. You have paid your entry fee, you have trained. You can do the distance (maybe not as fast as you would like, but that's wthe way most of us feel). There is no better feeling than when the announcer calls out your name at the finish. You are on top of the world and where you placed makes absolutely no difference. That feeling of accomplishment is why I race. Our bodies are capable of many unbelievable feats if we just have the courage to make it to the start line

I was once at a race where a severely overweight guy came in dead last, at least 15 minutes behind the next-to-last racer.  And he ended up getting a huge standing ovation from everyone who had finished.  We all lined up along the finish straight and even the event winners, top racers in New England, were there to cheer him on.  I'm sure this was the highlight of his career and something he'll remember forever.  Don't deprive yourself of the chance to become a triathlete...the endorphin rush you get from finishing (even in last place) will be indescribable.

Let us know how you did!

Most of us on this board have been in the same position you are in. Hell I'm currently there now and scared about my 2nd tri.

But just go out there and have fun. That's what it's all about right?

I second what everyone said.  I'm currently training for my first tri and am scared.  But like everyone is saying - once you're out there, that will be the last thing on your mind since your goal is to finish!   Go for it!
