a little different.

Shoeless Joe gambled on his own game.  He threw a world series for crying out loud, there's no heart there.

Charlie Hustle played with heart and passion and there is no evidence that he gambled at all while he was a player.  The games he bet on were after his playing days.

But he was a manager when he bet on games his own team played in - his influence over the outcome of those games was just as great as a player. The player vs. manager argument is not all that strong.

I'm not completely unsympathetic to Rose's arguments for reinstatement. He did play hard, which is sorely lacking in many major leaguers. I just don't think that MLB can send the message that you can bet on games your team plays in and still get in to the HOF. Particularly now when the game is under scrutiny because of steroids.

Back to the original mesage - I can't believe how stupid ballplayers are! Ryan Franlin just tested positive as well. Unreal! How can these guys look at all the publicity steroids got in the off season and think they can get away with taking them?

What I want to know it why are players getting caught just in the last week.  You saw a few small namers get busted in the first couple weeks of the season and now 90 games later they are busting bigger names.  I think it is lead up to the end of the season, Hey Yankee fans you're whole team will end up suspended in the last 10 games of the year.

As for Bonds, maybe the knee injury was just good timing, but he is being smart staying out of the steroid hunt.

I understand that these guys are taking something, but I doubt at this point they are still shooting anabolics.  But maybe baseball just needs to legalize them, but control them.  Must be controlled by leagues doctors or something.  Guys are getting hurt left and right this year and the teams are just down right ugly to watch.  Is it the roids that was making the game watchable?

I know the argument, what about the kids, well kids can't drink alochol, but adults still drink it in front of them.  And alcohol is much easier to come by the Roids.  By controlling it these pro athletes may be saving there bodies from the daily wear and tear.  It can't be proved either way at this point.  Although Lyle Alzado is great example of what can happen if consumption is not controlled, how many of guys didn't go to his extreme and we don't know the truth.  It is Pandora's box and the only person who tried to open it was Jose Canseco.  With his past discretions of gun touting and wife beating he is not believed.  But maybe if we listened to what he had to say, we would all know the truth.

The two most recent causalities Palmeiro and Franklin, didn't need them anyhow, but with old age, maybe it is what has kept careers alive.  Franklin was a gold medal pitcher in 2000, Raffy has had a great career (one of the best).  Are they both trying to relive their greatness?  Only time will tell what happens to the Steroid era, but now that we are entering the Marijuana era.  What are the reprocusions of that?

If you use Football as an example they went through the Steroid era in the 70's, marijuana in the 90s.  So baseball is just a little behind.  As for basketball, they are in the era of fighting.

Enough ramlbings.  Pete Rose, stay home.  Raffy did cheat on baseball and Barry is just smarter than everyone and hasn't been caught.

Wasn't it MLB and Commis Selig who said they would seriously reconsider his reinstatement if he admitted gambling on baseball? Then a week after the admission they emphatically denied his reistatment. Hopefully Selig chokes on his next ballpark frank. I think he's done more harm than good in this league. The Luxury tax was used to line Seligs own pockets.

As far a players getting caught with steroids in their systems I can see that happening from a minor league standpoint because they are trying to get their quicker but in the Majors? Come on Fellas. Good examples our professional athletes are setting today.

The first seven guys who got caught were no surprise. The mostly weren't native english speakers, they were between the minors and the 25 man roster, they didn't have consistent trainers or even a consistent home ballpark, so their diets were probably less controlled than the big guys. But Raffy speaks perfect english, (no warnings lost in translation) and at that level there is no way he doesn't know exactly what goes in his body. To get back on the juice (or whatever he had in him that was banned) as he chased 3000 hits and maybe even 600 hrs, unfathomably stupid.

Worth noting with the Rose thing, he walked by a sign every time he went into any ballpark that said "no gambling", there's a sign at every lockerroom at every field. Steroids (or other substances) weren't banned by baseball until just a couple years ago. Rose knew he what he was doing, and knew what the consequences would be. But all those roidheads during the nineties weren't violating baseball rules. (not to forgive, for all I care, set the record back at 61) Shoeless Joe on the otherhand, was probably way to stupid to know what was going on, not to mention its hard to say he threw the 1919 series when he batted .375, with only 2 strikeouts in 33 plate appearances.

News came out this morning - Palmeiro tested positive for ANABOLIC STEROIDS in MAY! Boy that whole 3,000 hit celebration doesn't seem tainted at all.

I'm starting to think they should test IQ's along with blood samples.
