In my opinion, one of the things that hurts peoples ability to lose weight are the online calculators. The numbers are terrible and they give wrong information that people will gladly use. If u want to give her formula's based on science instead of trusting online calculators which is probably where she is deriving the numbers. When I was looking to drop lbs through counting calories, I spent a ton of time reading papers on calorie usage for different exercise. One studies results:

Your Total Calorie Burn/Mile
Running
.75 x your weight (in lbs.)
Walking
.53 x your weight

Your Net Calorie Burn/Mile (Minus BMR)
Running
.63 x your weight
Walking
.30 x your weight

Adapted from "Energy Expenditure of Walking and Running," Medicine &
Science in Sport & Exercise, Cameron et al, Dec. 2004.

She would use the second formula with no BMR since you are tracking the delta versus no activity.

for her weight of 300lbs, she would burn 90 calories per mile, it gets adjusted as she drops weight, but maybe linking to science could help? but eating is the #1 issue as stated above

I use it, I LOVE IT

Whatever they give me for calories burned though, I usually cut that in half.

I also like MFP. I used it to take off 20lbs of winter weight. Easy to use and the food log and activity tracker seem pretty accurate. I compared it vs my garmin for running and it was spot on. In the end, it balancing the math. Calories in vs calories burned. There also seems to be a pretty active community on the site of people trying to lose significant amounts of weight. Challenge forums etc.

both garmin and mfp are high

my I got tested with the new leaf system.  It helps garmin to be closer to what it is and not just what they think it is.  Besides people like being told what they are doing is better than what they actually do.

Tought situation - i wouldn't wade into anything with her about the accuracy of those calories burned until you let her tell you what her approach is ... start the conversation first.  It looks like she's making a good start and probably could use help but it would be really important not to deter her with any negative talk.  You could ask her if she wouldn't mind help or you sending along nutrition information, links, recipes, articles, etc.  Being on a triathlon site, i am sure she knows that you're health conscious ...

This is my thinking. Open the door and be there when she asks for advice/help/suggestions but otherwise step away.

weight loss is almost 100% diet.  you don't even have to exercise.  before that can even mean a thing the person has to have the will power and drive to commit to doing what is needed.  a few years ago i went from 220 to 165 (couple of months) and i didn't count calories, counting is useless. if you eat 2000 calories of fat your body treats it differently than 2000 calories of lean protein.  maybe the weight watcher system is built around that but i don't know to say.

not to sound like a broken record of every diet out there, but chicken breast and veggies is the way to go.  the more beans the better too.  i ate beans at every meal; half a can of black beans minimum; they are high in protein and low in everything else.  very little bread, maybe whole oats, but limited.  i ate sushi rolls with rice within 30 minutes of exercise.  most of my meals where a stir fry of veggies with beans and chicken breast or grass fed beef.  there is a big difference between grass fed and corn fed.  i gave myself one day a week to eat w/e i wanted, and this would help curb cravings; if i wanted something bad one day, i wrote it down and promised to eat it on my cheat day.  the cheat day allowed me to eat all the food i shouldn't, and provided my body simple processed foods which it was easily able to digest/get rid of due to the organic and complex nature other everything else i ate.

The Garmin 910 has been looking pretty spot on for me.  Lower then BT calculates it at, and way lower then MFP.  Not all Garmin's calculate it the same way, which is part of the problem.  The 305 about doubles at least for the bike what it should be

That is why I never count cals burned via exercise as part of my food for the day.  You could easily eat 250 more cals in a day than you plan especially if your eat out once a day.   You could also think you burn 250 more cals than you actually do.  Combine those 2 and you did not lose anything for the day even though you think you should be down 500 cals.
