We had 4 occasions where we thought the dog was super serious about chasing us and actually got off and walked our bikes before we got to the dog. We screamed bad dog - go home about a million times. Worked each time. This time anyways. Seems like Cartersville is hit and miss. Time before above I didn't see a single loose dog. I have not quite gotten to the point of not riding up there but I can assure you I would not ride up there alone (and I have no problem riding anywhere else alone). |

Member 43![]() Marietta | Subject: RE: Who on here has actually been bitten by a dog while riding their bicycle?Neal, I wanted to share with you my traumatic dog-bike encounter. When I was 7 years old, riding my Schwinn banana seat bike (at your age I know you know what I am talking about) I was bitten by a dog in my neighborhood. I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about him outside of Pittsburgh anymore. I learned one important thing: never be the last person. She chased for pleasure not out of guarding and once someone stopped, she would stop. If the person acted hysterically, she would counter with her hysterics - that of a raging dog. She never got close enough to bite and when I called her would come. Obviously, I was younger and dumber then (no comments on if that has changed) and didn't always have her on a leash as we both enjoyed running free. Since you don't want to be stopping and changing pace much, I think we are back to water in the face and "No". One last point; notice my “chaser” dog was a female and not male. None of the male dogs would chase. I needed to rescind that - they don’t chase people they chase other things. Well I'm sure that didn’t help much and I have offended most people so my job is done. Enjoy riding, running and swimming when we have too and remember...never be the last person. |

I was on an easy 65 miler this morning on Old Louisville Rd. in Evans/Appling, GA. I must admit I was not thinking dog when out of nowhere I saw a snout and teeth and heard the bark -- my heart rate monitor hit zone 5 and my cadance when above 105. I out raced him. Now I know why traditional bike shorts are black . . . ![]() |

Middle Georgia | Subject: RE: Who on here has actually been bitten by a dog while riding their bicycle?I wasnt' bitten, but had a large dog (one of a pack of 4 dogs) actually run into the bike (just under the bottle cage) and lifted me. Per my Garmin, I was doing 27 mph at the time, trying to outrun the pack, but the big dog had the angle on me and just ran straight into me. I crashed hard, injuring my hip & shoulder. That was April 23rd. I am still recovering and unable to routinely rid my bike due to the hip injury. I wish the damn dog has just bitten me as at least then I'd still be riding. My ride at IM Augusta 70.3 is very doubtful at this moment. BTW, dog owner's son apologized (had to ask him for his street address so I could have someone come pick me up), but dog owner denied it was his dog. I had an accident report written by sheriff due to injuries and not knowing the status of my new Orbea Ordu carbon frame. Sheriff couldn't cite for leash law violation as he couldn't prove whose dog it was! Edited by lakeview 2009-08-12 9:34 AM |

Why didn't you go back and see who feeds the dog as a way of proving ownership? Did you ask the sheriff's department how you could prove ownership? Did the son say that it was their dog? It would seem to me that there is a way of proving dog ownership like maybe asking neighbor's who owns the dog or something of that nature. Edited by nealphelps 2009-08-12 10:00 AM |

Extreme Veteran 751![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Who on here has actually been bitten by a dog while riding their bicycle?Agree it is very rare. Ride the bike first. Most times it is all show and no go. BUT once it was obviously not... I would have been...for sure...no question...he meant business...quiet directed. Touring in Nova Scotia. A large shepard came out from behind bushes. Don't know where the idea came from, but as his mouth was closing, not on the tire but definitely aimed at my leg, I pulled the pump out and whacked him behind the ear. This was awhile back with the older full length pumps. I had never thought of using it for that purpose...it just happened. The dog was as surprised as I, and perhaps chased slower in the future? For a known chronic and aggressive dog offender, I may be fussed at for this but I would use a brief blast of bear spray (making sure there isn't a rider behind me and which way the wind is blowing etc etc). Aggresive dogs are dangerous and need behavior modification if owners and police don't do it. |

Member 136![]() ![]() Limbo | Subject: RE: Who on here has actually been bitten by a dog while riding their bicycle?I've brandished a frame pump for dog control before. I've also used the water from my bottles. I've also used a very effective vocalization. ONE dog didn't respond to any of that. After the fifth time on that road with that dog chasing with intent to bite, I got pissed. I stopped and went after the dog brandishing my bike. In fairness, it was my beater bike. I was ready to whallop that damn dog upside the head with it. It took off running and now has a new name, 360. Now when it sees the cyclists coming, it runs to the road and then runs in circles instead of after the bikes. Yes, I have The Power. |
