I disagree - poor spelling and grammar can EASILY hinder a discussion. Typos (unite and untie) are simple MISTAKES, but when someone fails to use capitals and any sort of punctuation it makes it impossible to understand their post. I have better things to do than decipher internet chicken scratch.
Would you rather spend your time correcting others mistakes or simply ignore the post? On one of my websites I advise everyone who is posting that any posts in which sentences and proper nouns do not start with capitals will be deleted. Posts which are all uppercase are handled similarly. But that is not the same as someone jumping on a typo or wrong word (I remember not too long ago I used Boarder in lieu of Border and was gently mocked by another poster I still am uncertain as to how that furthered the discussion which was about FINA ). If you try to type as fast as you are thinking then mistakes like that happen I just don't see the benefit of dwelling on them.
Maybe what we really need in addition to a browser spell checker is a browser Strunk & White plugin.
