How's everyone's training going? I'm heading up to ride the course for the first time tomorrow. Weather should be nice!

I have a bit of an IMSG hangover still.  Was just getting back into the swing of things when last weekend, I took a header over the bike, avoiding being hit by a turning vehicle.  Concussion is clearing and I'm hoping to be back on the road this weekend.  We'll see.....

I got a chance to preview the swim and bike courses on Saturday.

Swim: The current is a little stronger than expected which means the outbound leg seems long and the return trip is WAY fast. The water is already pretty warm. If anyone is thinking about doing this sans-wetsuit, you'll be fine. The depth was fine most of the way until you hit the turnaround. About 100-200 meters before the turn around, it gets ridiculously shallow. I found it easier and more efficient to do backstroke. Of course, if I try this on race day, I'll likely slam into people in front of me who stop to stand up.

Bike: There are some pretty rough patches of road in the first 20 miles which is annoying. I imagine there will be a few crashes due to people swerving wildly to miss surprise potholes. The views are spectacular the entire way. Gorgeous wineries and TONS of vineyards will make you want to stop for a taste or two. The first 20 miles has lots of rollers that will keep you shifting a lot but nothing too bad. There are lots of technical twists and turns too which I think is fun. On the elevation profile, it looks like Canyon Rd is a good climb, but it's super tame. There are some nice long flat sections before you hit Chalk Hill. Chalk isn't as bad as I thought either. I think this is the first time I got into my small ring on the ride. I think the climb was only about 10 minutes or so. It was nothing compared to some of the climbs on the Wildflower course. There is a sweet downhill stretch after Chalk, then you'll turn left on Pleasant Road which will require you to get into a small gear again for a short climb. 6 or 7 flat (only an overpass to get over 101) miles later, you're done.

A little over two weeks to go!!! Good luck everyone, I'm praying for mild temperatures!

Hopefully its not the 103 degrees of last year...

I'm still trying to fully recover from IMSG....trying to wrap my head around racing again and not have a poopy attitude about it

I checked the weather in Guerneville and I am now officially freaking out. It was 97 this past weekend and predicted to be 97 again by the middle of next week. I am not sure how I am going to be able to handle that kind of heat!!!

The heat is going to be a major factor coming from Seattle where we are having an unseasonably cool Summer so far.

Absolutely, and here in SF, too!
I've been driving down to Woodside for my long ride/bricks midday to get some heat training in (high 70's/low 80's).

Start hydrating now.  I am trying to drink at least 80 oz/day minimum from now until then.  It's so hard to do when it's 50F out!

I think I waited until race week last year to get with the hydration plan.  It's going to be tough if it is above 90F regardless, but maybe being fully hydrated for 3 weeks prior will help a little.

Good luck to everyone!  So excited!

One week! How is everyone feeling? I swam and rode the course for the last time yesterday. The weather was perfect (mid 80s) after a bit of fog in the morning. They already had signs up at Windsor high school telling people to expect road closures. I can't believe it's almost here!

I'm struggling with a serious 'attitude problem' about the race...I had a stress fracture after IMSG on May 1, so no running until about 10 days ago just in time to taper, so of course all I want to do is run ALOT, plus a relationship ended(again all i want to do is run ALOT), plus in general still feel not quite 'on' since SG....hopefully the expo and energy around the start will coax me out of this funk mood.

Okay, Littlecat!  From your avatar pic and your user name (beast on the bike), we know you have what it takes!!!  You will rock the bike and the run will come to you.  We will have good weather this year!

Calimavs (or anyone?)-- do you know if the swim course will be open on that Saturday (day before the race)?  Do they have buoys up already, and is it protected from canoes and kayaks?

I'm hoping to do a morning swim before athlete check in and am staying in Guerneville.

Thanks and good luck to everyone on the??i?r? ?t?a?p?e?r??!

Not sure the set-up this coming weekend, but when I swam there yesterday the buoys were not up yet. Also, the course is not protected from boats/canoes/kayakers so definitely wear a brightly colored swim cap. There were a lot of triathletes swimming there and the boaters know to look out for people swimming but just to be on the safe side we all wore yellow caps. Ended up drinking boat fumes a bit during part of the swim which was not pleasant.

Hi There...I was checking out the Vineman thread to see if I could get any last minute tips.  My 2nd at this distance.  My family and I are driving a motorhome too.  What RV park are you staying at?  We have reservations at the KOA in Cloverdale for after the race but wanted to be closer to the start venue for the night before....I couldn't get Johnson's Beach because they don't allow dogs....

I did a swim preview a few weeks ago and I didn't see any boats or canoes. If you're worried about that - early is the name of the game. As long as the gates to Johnson's Beach are open, you should be able to swim. I'm not sure when bouys will be in the water.

Weather check - Healdsburg is showing a high of 89 degrees on Sunday. Ugh!

We are staying at the Riverbend RV Resort in Forestville, which is about 4 miles away. We have a dog so I had the same needs as you do. I am not sure if they have any spots available but it's worth a try. Best of luck in the race.

Thanks for the vote of confidence kt45! I really just need to HTFU

Perhaps for Saturday before registration setting a time to swim if folks want to swim in a group. I'd be totally down for that!! Any one else interested?? And perhaps a casual lunch in town before going to the madness?

I'd be up for it, too!

As far as parking at Johnson's Beach,  I'm not sure but if I recall correctly there is parking up on the side streets and it is only a few (three or four) blocks walk down to the beach.

I am on the early check in, 10:30. I was planning on going to the 10:00 pre-race meeting. So if I swim it'll be early. I want to get settled with my run gear early then enjoy the rest of my day.

BTW, what cassette are folks using?

I am driving up from the city early as possible and will try to meet you guys depending on traffic.  As I recall, it took almost 45-1:00 to get to the Windsor schoolfrom Guerneville so that would mean swimming closer to 7:00-7:30 if peeps want to get to the 10:00 mtg.

Modie- I am using a compact 50/34 and 11/28 on my tri bike.  I had a 50/34 and 12/25 on my roadie last year and it worked just fine.

Wow, want to trade gearing?  I've got a 53/39 (I think) and 12/25.  And I suck at hills.  And I sort of didn't get around to training.  Good times ahead this weekend!  At least the views will be awesome.
