Subject: RE: Troy's Group Open

Hello to all,

Starting the new year I’ve modified the BT training plan to fit my schedule and needs.  Plunging in to the first week back in training I feel great. Two months rest on the knee has paid off. I survived the long run and the long bike was relaxed and a good base to start from.

I have a friend new to the training plans that asked to train together, I accepted since both know that triathlon training is individual but is enhanced by other sources of motivation and guidance.

Reflecting back on last years training I was just like my friend going 0 to 60  in the Couch to Oly training program. I made my mistakes by pushing harder than I should have but I guess that’s how I learn some times. In short I have stated my goals but have to  facets that I will pay more attention to this year, diet and training recovery. I’ve been charting dietary intake for the last 3 weeks and counting every calorie is harder than you think-- but eye opening. From diet planning so far I have learned to balance my daily fat intake instead of the rollercoaster ride I’ve been on. I also was surprised to find that besides the X-mass feast, my daily caloric intake is balanced. Second was recovery. I thought of this after telling my friend that going over the training plan will only lead to trouble ie. possible injury,  lack of motivation, general fatigue and compromise the immune system.  Not to lecture but just to say training smart makes sense.

Jeff

Hi Troy,

Hope it warmed up enough to make for a nice workout for you today!  Been snowing her in D/FW, TX.

Thanks so much for the info and suggetions!  Here are my HR zones:

50-60% = 133-146
60-70% = 146-160
70-80% = 160-173
80-90% = 173-187
90-100% = 187-200
** I have to use the formula that allows you to enter a min and max...I know my max was at least 200 (per Garmin at end of 5K races a couple of years ago), which doesn't fit the other forumlas.

Avg heart rate on my run yesterday was 166, and avg pace was 11:31.  I was having a conversation with my friend the whole way, so it sure didn't seem like I was pushing too hard.  First time I've worn my HR strap in a while, so that's the only recent data point I have.

Also watched the Chi Running video, and it makes a lot of sense.  Seems kind of like TI swim thinking.  I'll work on incorporating it.  Thanks also for the stretches (have foam roller, need to use it).  I visited with a PT friend at church, and she gave me some strengthening exercises that will hopefully help as well.  May visit a new podiatrist who runs.  I have custom orthotics due to an arch tear (healed, but still weakness there), and am not sure if they are maybe overcorrecting and causing other problems.

How's everyone else doing?

p.s. Would also love to hear opinions on whether spin classes are a worthwhile substitute for biking during the winter???

I have to say that my weekend was terrible.  After a great week of getting back into a routine, I began to get pretty sick around Thursday with a sore throat and clogged up ears.  To make matters worse, I'm headed to Hondorus and Nicaragua on Friday for two weeks where I will be visiting some of the food sustainability and education programs my organization has there.  I don't want to be sick while traveling in a developing country (I don't want to be sick while home either) where I will already be struggling to ensure that I am at least getting some training in.  I tried to do some core work this morning, but had to leave the gym because I couldn't hear.  Hopefully the z-pack will start to work soon!  I hope everyone had a healthier and much more productive weekend than I did!

Uggh!  Sorry about your badly timed illness, nkiger.  Flying w/ a clogged up head is no fun either.  Hope the antibiotics will kick it to the curb sooner rather than later.

4 mile run this am...stopped to stretch after 2.5, and finished w/out pain.

How's the rest of the group doing this week?

NAME: Sandy / swise. 2011 will be my fourth season in triathlons. I have recently been hitting a mental wall and hope that a forum group will help reel me back in. I am a typical middle of hte pack kind of girl. I am strong on the swim, average on the bike and just below average on the run.

FAMILY STATUS: I am married mom of two (6 and 8) with a dog and full time job.

2010 RACES: couple sprints, Rev3 Knoxville HIM, and my first IM in Louisville, KY.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: still working this year's schedule out -- haven't paid for any tri's yet. Have a 50k trail run in two weeks - which will be my first (I anticipate a fair amount of walking). Still undecided if will do one or two HIM (spring in fall) but for certain will be doing the Rev3 in Anderson, South Carolina in the fall.

CURRENT TRAINING: I have been running a lot lately for my 50k - well "a lot" may be saying a bit much, but more than swimming or biking. I have a coach (Dan w/Endurance Concepts) who is great.

Hello all! Thanks for all the posts. It is great to have a nice variety of folks to work with and support each other. This week has been one of 14 hour days (including training starting at 4:30 am!). I know some of you know how this goes. I am looking to Saturday to read all histories and goals to get back to each of you personally and then begin to get some group norms set up for posts etc. I would li,e to know if each person has a heart rate monitor and/or if anyone you are training with power meters. Also, if you have not taken a look at device called Swimovate http://www.swimovate.com/.It is kind of neat. Finally, is there anyone who is training in the pool via Total Immersion Swimming?Just a few items to get us started. I agree with one post - let's get the training started. Try Pride Focus - Troy

I do have a HR Monitor - Garmin // no power meter though. Haven't quite talked my husband into giving the thumbs up on that one yet. Looked at the swimovate web-site and that looks awesome!! I would love to hear if anyone is using that yet. (when logging) I have a 100 lap counter and would love to be able to download this data w/o having to do manually. Used the total immersion book for a while when first started - but now use workouts that I get from my coach. Looked at web-site and it looks like a great resource.

Hi Troy. I would like to join your mentor group. I am 48 years old and I`m training for my first triathlon. I am married with 2 kids and reside in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
I have been road biking roughly 3000-4000 kms a year and swimming fairly long distances in pools. I `ve always wanted to do a triathlon but thought I could never do one or I could not finish one. My Dad recently passed quickly and was not able to do things he wanted to do before he died. It inspires me to do a triathlon now.

I love training and I cant wait to do my first tri. I have been training for 2 and 1/2 months now and am really enjoying it. I am doing the Olympic balanced program from beginner triathlete .com. I have been logging my training on the training log. Lots of snow, so im on spinning bike and swimming at the Y.

Thanks Troy, Kevin.

Good evening everyone.  My training today was shoveling snow at 6:00 this morning.  I came home and tried to ride the trainer, but wound up with a flat tire instead.  C'est la vie.  I've fixed the tire (or so I think) and I hope to be up in the morning and on the trainer again.  I've downloaded a Tour de France documentary from Netflix that is pretty fun to watch while riding.  It's supposed to be about 10 below in the  morning.  Welcome to our new members and good luck!

Hi Troy,

I would like to join the group if possible!

Name: Samatha

Age
: 19

Status: single

Current Training
: I am a avid cyclist who has been cycling for 7 going on 8 months now. I got into a pretty bad bike wreck on Thanksgiving which left me with two herniated disk, but the pain does not slow me down! Anyhow, I took a week off after the accident then got back on the bike. I have not had any problems with my back until new years eve to present. So, lately my miles have gone down to 15-20. But I am getting back up there!

Weight: I am 5'9 153. I am all lean muscle- so no problems with this area.

2011 Goals
:  I will be cycling in the MS tour down here in Florida. I am also interested in entering races, etc.-I am not really sure where to start since I am new to all of this. Anyhow, I am great at keeping myself motivated-I probably go a little overboard with cycling though because I love it! A few other goals would be to set up a vegetarian meal plan with recipes etc, and organize my training days into a log. I am supposed to get at least 3,000 calories a day, but I only eat a little over 1,000. So I have had days where I have burned more calories than I consumed. (which is bad!) Also, another issue of mine is not drinking enough water.. (So all of the above I need some assistance with.)

OK, according to the website you sent us to, my HRZ are as follows:
50-60 %     124-135
60-70 %     135-146
70-80 %     146-156
80-90 %     156-167
90-100%    167-178

This is after only one measurement of my resting heart rate, but it'll have to do for now.

I put these under the 'Run' HRZ on the training, but I don't get what you mean by the Bike being higher.  Does my max go up on the bike and everything else with it?  Also, should the swim be the same zone as the run?  Not that I have any way to monitor during a swim.  My HRM is from the Garmin 305, which isn't waterproof.  As I said before, I have yet to actually use it, but it's on my to-do list.

Two other administrative questions.  Is there a way to link to this thread more easily?  Like a favorites or something?  And finally, I'm curious if my training profile is visible to any of you, or do I need to add you as a 'friend' or whatever.  I think it's public, but I don't really know.

Thanks!
Mike

2010 was my first year doing triathlons, I did five Olympic  and 2 sprint races.. I really surprised myself in how well I did, my first race was an Olympic I set a goal of 3hr 30 min and wanted to just finish and I was able to finish in 2:53 each race I was able to improve. I really got the bug and really love doing the events.

I'm 39 years old, married with two kids 15 and six.. I'm in the heating and air conditioning business so I have to work my training in.

2010 Races: You can view my race log to see my race reports/times..I also had knee surgery in Feb. 2010...Was able to recover and get my races in.. The runs started out  S.L.O.W but made great strides during the year..

2011 Race Plan: Right now this is what I'm thinking:
5/14 Florida 70.3 or REV3 Knoxville Half
6/2011 West Point Lake Olympic
7/2011 Chattanooga Waterfront
8/2011 Find something to fill the gap
9/2011 Augusta 70.3

2011 Goals: To compete and finish my first HIM,  Continue to improve in all 3 disciplines, to try and stay injury free.. Sub 2:30 Olympic time.. Most of all to have fun!!!

Weightloss: Would really like to drop 20 lbs and get leaner.. Currently 5' 8.5" 185lbs

Current Training: I did some mountain biking starting in October, in November I had a crash when the front tire blew off causing a shoulder separation with some tears, no surgery required at this time, it has already been rebuilt in 01.. So I gave my body a 8 week break with some light running.. I started back on the roadie on the first of Jan. this year and started increasing my runs.. I have to leave the swim on the back burner until the doc says it is ok..

Troy
I have a Garmin 310xt with heart rate monitor ,indoor trainer for the bike but no powertap...

I'm not sure what plan I want to use for my HIM training so any suggestions from our members are welcome..
Look forward to working with you all..

Thanks in advance for providing your time to mentor us..

I think I did this correctly:

50%-60%    125-136
60%-70%    136-147
70%-80%    147-158
80%-90%    158-170
90%-100%  170-181

Greetings,

I learned this trick last year, but here are a couple  of ways to add a link through your blog.  Let me know if you get stuck.

Method 1

  1. Copy the web address at the top of the forum (Highlight and Control C, or edit/copy)
  2. Select settings at the top of the screen.
  3. Select “Training Blog customization.”
  4. Select Blog Links
  5. Paste the copied web address and write a title or description
  6. Click “update blog links” at the bottom of the screen.
  7. When you next launch your blog, a link will appear on the right side of your blog in the links section (you have to scroll down a little bit).

Method 2

  1. Copy the web address at the top of the forum (Highlight and Control C, or edit/copy)
  2. Select settings at the top of the screen.
  3. Select “Training Blog customization.”
  4. Select dashboard
  5. Type “Forum” or other name for the link on the page.
  6. Highlight what you’ve typed and then click on the icon of the chain that says edit/ insert link.
  7. A new window will open.  Paste the web address you copied into the URL.
  8. Close the window by clicking insert.
  9. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click “update dashboard”
  10. The link should now appear at the top of your blog.
Hope that helps!
