On workout days I usually do my warm up and cool down on the grass barefoot. Other than that I'm in shoes.

I just went for a run on a local trail (it's a .75 mile trail, so you have to go around a few times). Two old ladies who were walking on the trail actually stopped and asked me about my FiveFingers. I've had people give me weird looks when I wear them, but I never had someone stop me to ask about them.

Also, I just completed my longest run (3 miles) in 4 1/2 years. I had a very serious ankle injury from running that required surgery 3 times and left me with arthritis at age 25. Running in my FiveFingers is the only way I can run. Whenever I try to run in sneakers, I have really bad ankle pain and can only run about 5 minutes at a time. I am never going back to sneakers.

I've always been intrigued with barefoot running. A couple weeks ago I started just taking my shoes off for the last 5 minutes of my run, just to see how it felt (i hide my shoes and come back to them after). I do most of my running on a trail, so it can be kinda harsh on the feet (but nice on the knees). I love the feeling of barefoot running, it does remind me of being a kid again: no worries, no fears. I don't really even mind the occasional sharp pebble pain. AFter about a minute of running, I feel like I relax totally, and I get (gasp) happy...

I intend to slowly add more time to the barefoot portions of my run, but have no plans to go completely shoeless any time soon. Variety is good for feet too.

I had one woman look at my Five Fingers and laugh but everyone else (well, except my hubby who is horrified by them) seems to think they are cool.  I had one person say that they were so ugly they were cute.  I don't actually care who thinks what. I love to run in them! I did buy a pair of Nike Frees this week.  I have only run a few miles in them so the jury is out.  All I really want to do is wear the Five Fingers.  I just can't run a 5k on concrete in them (yet).  I have a tri next weekend so I had to find some sort of racing footwear.  I don't think the Five Fingers would be too great in transition either. Jamming my toes into the right lots with steamy feet from the bike might not go so well. My long term goal is to do some longer trail runs or an Xterra Tri wearing the  Five Fingers.  I love they have put the fun back into running again for me!

Just returned from a vacation where I ran a few miles daily barefoot on the beach.  I walk barefoot all the time and usually have a beach run to T1 at races, but most of my runs are in Kayanos on asphalt.  By the end of 10 days, I really felt it in my soleus muscles.  Is that typical for new barefoot runners?  Something I can strengthen with more barefoot running or with my Newton shoes?  Stretching?

I figure it could also possibly be due to the tide slope on the beach, the occasionally sinky sand, the fact that I don't run daily at home (no bike on vacation), or worst case, I have chronic compartment syndrome in the deep posterior (had ant. and lat. compartments released last year, so I know all about CCS).

They finally had some men's FiveFingers in size 40, so I ordered a pair yesterday.  I really wanted the KSO model, but all they had was the Sprint, so I'm giving that one a try.  Assuming the fit is correct, I look forward to trying them out a bit.  I'll definitely start slow, and maybe just run in grass at first.  Or perhaps just walking in them for a while and not trying to run at all.

I am still transitioning. I go BF on soft surfaces like the beach, grass and the composite running track.

I've been wanting to give BF a try and your post gave me an idea. My local high school does have a composite track - might be worth trying it for a few laps to build up my feet.

If your going to run on a track do it early in the morning. By mid morning or early afternoon if the sun has been beating down on it you don't want to be on it barefoot until you have built up the skin on the sole of your foot.

I ran barefoot 3 miles on the h.s. track 5 showers and 2 swims ago and my soles are still black   Surprised the lifeguard didn't kick me out of the pool.

Graceful Bulldog - 2008-05-16 5:52 PM I am continuing to run almost exclusively in my Five Fingers.  Today I did several miles on a muddy road that I would have never run on in shoes.  At the end I felt like a kid and just hosed them off.  I can't believe how much better I run "almost" barefoot.  I was seriously thinking of quiting running before I took both the Chi Running course and started my barefoot effort.  When I first bought my Five Fingers I tried them out on the treadmill.  I sounded like an elephant pounding away.  I never noticed that in "real" shoes.  Last week I tried them out on the treadmill and I was SO much quieter.  The leg I have trouble with still makes some noise.  Thought it was an interesting discovery.  I am still getting a lot of blisters on my toes and heels.  I ran completely barefoot on grass to let some of my blisters heel a little.  The fun is back in running.  I hope this helps anyone who thinks about giving it a try.  I still don't run more than a mile on concrete, though.  Amazing difference since 3 months ago I was in physical therapy for the 3rd time, had custom orthodics that were changed multiple times and wore a brace.  I wear none of that now and don't even run with an Ipod anymore.  I just enjoy running too much to block it out with music.  Can't believe it myself.  I hope the next months will finally allow me to build up longer distance.  I will keep you all posted.

Congratulations!!!!  Please keep us posted.

I've never heard of this, but I just checked out the  BFR's website--so cool!!!  I can see it on golf courses and soft grass (and of course beaches), and I understand that your feet/body will build up to it, but how would a person do something like that in Arizona where it gets up to almost 120 and the ground is super hard, rocky, and even hotter??  I'm interested in trying it out on a golf course--do they frown pretty strongly on runners?

Yes.  You will get in the way and can get hit by a ball.  I've golf barefoot and love it - but that's not what your asking.  Try BF running on a H.S. football, soccer or baseball field.  Especially now in the summer when schools not in session.
I love running barefoot on grass, especially in the rain.  I'm getting ready to try it out on my dirt road.  The FF is something that I'd like to check out.  I'll ask which kind is better (KSO vs Sprint) when Im closer to pulling the trigger.

I have KSO's and really dig them. I only wear them for trail running and walking while out 'n about in general (most stores require shoes of course and parking lots are full of glass sadly). I run in grass just barefoot though and think it's great, especially when the grass is damp, really childhood like for sure. I wore my KSO's for a few hours for many days before doing my first short run, read many other threads & blogs about slowly working into barefoot running. And since it hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet, definitely read the recently published book 'Born to Run' by Chris McDougall as it's a awesome story with a basis on barefoot running [and Vibram FF are mentioned too :]
