redfoot31415 - 2009-06-24 11:42 PM I know for longer adventure races folks eat anything that's put in front of them. I was a TA captain in one of the later TA's at Primal Quest last year and the Merrell Team walked out eating potato chips with the navigator downing a starbuck's double shot. Granted that was day 4 and I don't think he had slept in at least 36 hours..... At a certain time cut off I have problems not GI wise but taste wise. For longer backpacking stuff, working at primal quest, etc... calories and variety were what it came down to. I've never done a full Iron so I wouldn't know, but I'd think eating/drinking one thing over 14 hours would start to drive you mad. Totally agree. I attempted a 320 mile continuous bike ride and was eating whatever I could get my hands on at pit stops (unsupported) = pizza, chicken finger, chips, pop. Never had a GI problem at all because I would also train by eating that type of food knowing what I was getting into ahead of time. Guess it goes back to training with what you are going to be eating on race day.
I think effort level has something to do with it as well. I doubt you are pushing as hard for a 320 mile ride as you are for medium distance Tri, plus you don't have to run. For all day mountain bike rides I can eat anything I want (salami sammich anyone? ) but if I have to run, I have to be very careful with what's in my stomach when I get off the bike and what goes in while I am running. |
