Welcome Taylor!

I think it is awesome you are trying to support your dad in his marathon. Having someone to support your training makes it that much easier to get up in the morning! I definatly think we should set a goal of a race for you in the near future and strt working towards reaching that goal. Having a goal will help you with your training, trust me on this. It is a lot easier to put in the miles if you know you have a race on this date, so take a minute and check out some possibilities for future races late in the summer.

Welcome!

Alright team, I am going to close this group down, I think we are close to 10 people now!

Just a few thoughts I want to throw out to get this party started...

1)  We are all here to help each other.  No matter your experience I don't want anyone afraid to ask questions or throw their 2 cents in to the discussion.  The more discussion there is and the more everyone gets involved the "funner" this will be for everyone.

2)  I will be as positive as possible, and I don't take kindly to rude/demeaning behavior.  That said, it can sometimes be necessary to be a little hard on people in order to get their butts in gear if I feel they are slacking off.  Please don't be offended, but if you are please tell me or go straight to the person who offended you and try to talk it out.

3)  It looks like everyone at least knows how to log workouts.  If you do not understand the workout section, please send me a PM and I will walk your thought it. It is extrememly important for me to be able to see what you are doing on a daily basis. I would also expect everybody on this team to visit the logs of everyone else.

4)Does everyone know about "inspires"?  We communicate with each other through this forum and through inspires on our daily workout logs.  I expect everyone to inspire people in our group at least once a week.  This is why we are here...to help each other out and keep each other motivated.  If I didn't need the inspiration I would just write all my workouts down on a piece of paper at home.  It is amazing how good you will feel when you log in one morning and find inspires from a bunch of people telling you how great a workout you had yesterday...inspiring you to do more.

5) There is also a section in your settings called friends. Please add everyone in the group to your friends section, this will make it easier for you to naviagte the site and see their workouts.

And please do not be afraid to add your .02 into the forum. We have people in the group that have strong backgrounds in running and biking it looks like, so any tips are welcomed. I am no expert or coach, I do nothave all the answers, but I have raced in about 15 Sprints and Olympic tris and have gained some insight that has worked for me, and I hope it will assist you guys in your goals!

So let me start with a few questions.

My first race is in May 31st.

Do you guys know of a comfortable bike seat? ; mine is killing me. It restricts my bloodflow and after 30 mins. I lose all sensitivity in the pudendal region.

Also, what do you consider the bare minimum equipment for a triathlon? I have a road bike with no aero bars, and no wetsuit. Are those necessary? Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks,

As far as a good bike seat, I may not have the best answer for you and I hate not having an answer nt he very first group question! Sastuff (scott) in our group has logged some gret biking miles, so maybe he can give you some insight. If not, I would partner with the LBS and let them know your issues. You also might try using Chamois butter, I use it on every ride and it helps with the skin irritation form riding...

As far as the bare minimum equipment for a triathlon question, here is my opinion: (based on a sprint Tri)

Swim- goggles, swim cap (usually provided) and tri shorts and shirt. If the water temp is 70 or higher, you should be alright without a wetsuit. Hopefully by the end of May the temps should be fine.

Bike- bike, helmet, glasses, clipled in shoes (you can get by with toe straps) use same shorts and shirt from the swim

Run- running shoes

Aero bars to me are not a necessity on sprint tris and even on some Olympic distance. Anything over the Olympic distance I would definately reccomend them. You can get a set of clip on aero bars from $40 up, so they aren't too pricey, but be sure and practice with them, they take a while to get used to.

Now that list was the bare minimum, there are so many toys we could add, but I am not always sure they are needed.

Hey group, havent got to introduce myself yet.

My name is Grant and I am just about to graduate college.  I am ready to dive into the triathlon world and am trying to get myself ready to get a solid training program going over the summer.  I have some running experience but little to none when it comes to biking and swimming, and will be using a spin bike for the next few weeks until I am able to buy one when at home.  I have much to learn and am ready to get going!

Bike saddles can be extremely difficult to find the perfect fit, kind of like running shoes.

I am currently using a Terry Falcon and love it.

http://www.terrybicycles.com/saddles/mens/detail/2157800/-/falcon-y-saddle-black

If you have a good Local Bike Shop (LBS), they usually have saddles to loan or try before you buy.  I would say you need a minimum of 50 miles on the seat to have a good assessment.  Don't be bashful in trying a few.  Some you will know right away from just a parking lot ride.  Others you will need a longer ride or rides.  Spend some time here, your time on the bike should not be uncomfortable.  Also, the most expensive is not necessarily the best fit for you.

If you look at the top of the page, you will see a button called settings. Once you click that button, you can customize your blog (training log) and add friends or pals! Makes it alot easier to follow up on people!

Hey James, quick question for you:

I have not done any tri's before, and would like to get one under my belt to get some experience.  I do not have a road bike and will be hopefully purchasing one sometime in the next month or two, and now have a much older mountain bike sitting in the garage.  Do you think I'm better off just hoping on that and getting my first sprint done, or should I wait awhile until I get the road bike? I have most of the basics you listed to get by a sprint with.

Grant, my first sprint triathlon was done on a mtn bike with slick tires. You will not be as fast as a road bike, but some tris have what hey call a fat tire division, which is specifically designed for mtn bikes. I seriously doubt that you will be the only person out there on a mtn bike also! So if there are budget concerns, I'd say go with the mtn bike, it will also make you appreciate your road/Tri bike when you buy it!

I had a tough swim workout today at Master's Class:

3 x 200 @ 4:00 decreasing (each set got faster)
8 x 25 @ :30
4 X 150 @ 2:40 decreasing with each set
8 X 25 @ :30
5 X 100 @ 2:00, 1:55, 1:50, 1:45, 1:40
8 X 25 @ :30
4 X 50 @ 1:00, :55, :50, :45

1 X 400 Kick with fins and kickboard- only got 100 yds- foot cramps
1 X 400 Pull buoy

1 X 200 Timed didn't even try

Total 3500 yds

Now, I only finished 3,000yds due to my feet cramping on the kick protion of the workout.

My morning run workout:

1.25 mile WU 8:30-9 minute pace

3.0 mile speed work- 1st half mile at 8:45, 2nd half mile @ 7:30, repeat

1.25 mile CD- 10:20 total time

This is the one place along my route at about 6 AM. If that does not make you want to enjoy a run, then nothing will!

Newbie Run Questions

So last night I had a nice run.  28 minutes and 2 miles.  Yes, it's slow, but I didn't walk at all.  It was the first time I have done that in 14 years. It felt great, but I have two questions.

1. After the run was over, my left leg felt like it was ready to go again while my right leg felt like a tree log.  Every muscle was really tight.  Could this be due to technique? or maybe the fact that the trail is slightly sloped?

2.  Just a few weeks off the couch, should I be worried about my heart rate at all?  My heartrate for most of the run was in zone 4 according to my tracker--in the 170s mostly, but I didn't feel like I was pushing it that hard.

OK question #1:
I am not sure why one leg would feel worse than the other. I know I have had pains in only one leg before and it was due to the slope of the road I was running on, but it had progresses and me running the same route over and over made it worse. I would really work on just building the your running base right now and forget the time part of it. And please, don;t downplay your run by saying it was slow, sounds like a few weeks ago you might have been slower, so celebrate the wins and the progress.

Question #2

I personally do not train with a HRT Monitor, never have. I do not like it and I found myself looking at the silly thing more than concentrating on my stride and breathing. Now there will be some, alot that do train with one, and maybe many in our group (if you do train with a monitor, please chime in here) use one. I know when I am pushing it too hard nad I know when I can push it harder, and everyday is different. SO much can factor into it!  The better base you build for running, then I think the HR will level out and you will be able to control it better by better breathing and pacing.

P.S. I am not a Dr, but I did stay in a Holiday  Inn Express not long ago! LOL

I usually run with a HRM but I definitely don't know everything about them lol. You should check to see if your max HR and min HR are all correct. I know I will have to change mine soon. If you are feeling good then you are running at a pretty good pace. I would just check all your numbers. After using it so long I pretty much know where my heart rate is because of how I feel. I am usually pretty tired when I'm in my power zone for a few min.
