12k Gold is barely gold at all.  Not sure what metals they use to alloy it with, but I'd say you're looking at some sort of degradation due to that metal.

24k gold shouldn't react with anything, even chlorine.  

Platinum is a good alternative to gold if you're looking for something "precious"   We did platinum for our wedding set, and it has really held up well.  I used to never take it off, but I lost about 40 pounds and now I have to worry about it falling off in the pool.    It has withstood all of my car maintenance, rock climbing, and general clumsiness.

I was planning on replacing it this month, but thanks to my tenent (She's out of there!) it will have to wait a few months.  I'll be checking out platnium, stainless steel and some others.
