Good thing I'm married to a tailor! Gull, good work on your training. The open water swim makes me more nervous than the transitions in a tri. Wow we both have races coming up in the next few weeks. I'm nervous but I found out a former classmate that lives near me is going to be in the race and I a lady I just met over the weekend is going to join me too. The countdown is on. Maggie Very cool. It makes it so much nicer if you can do those first few races with other people you know. Jessica |

New user 1 | Subject: RE: 13 Week Sprint Training Plan Group Hello! I am signed up for key West December 05th Spring Tri. It will be my first. I have been building up a on all three sports for about two weeks now and ready to give the 13 (12 week for me) plan a shot. I thought I could do a bit more than what the program calls for but decided to be cautious and stick to the guidelines to avoid over training or getting injured. Although I have been working out for a couple of years, only limited on endurance so this is my change of pace for the rest of 2010....If anyone here is going to this event, please let me know....Good training to you all! Member 48 Seattle | Subject: RE: 13 Week Sprint Training Plan Group Welcome to the group. Good luck with your goals. I am going to pick up a wetsuit and try some open water swims with a partner later this week. This is really stepping out. It is the reason I have avoided tri's even though I love to swim. The open water swims make me nervous. But, hopefully I will conquer that fear this week. |

Member 48 Seattle | Subject: RE: 13 Week Sprint Training Plan Group When I run my calves are less sore than they used to be but still burn about 5 minutes into the run. I am stretching and warming up before (5 min brisk walk followed by stretching). Am I not stretching enough? Or is it always going to burn? |

I am stretching and warming up before (5 min brisk walk followed by stretching). Am I not stretching enough? Or is it always going to burn? What kind of stretching? Usually the 5 minute walk should be enough, and the usual static "lean and reach" type of stretching isn't indicated for before your workout, but after. As far as your calves, it could be fitness, it could also be shoes. How old/what type are your shoes? I find that when my shoes are getting to the replacement point, I have more aches and ouchies when I run than when my shoes are good to go. John |

Elite 4048 Gilbert, Az. | Subject: RE: 13 Week Sprint Training Plan Group thegull - 2010-09-01 4:50 PM I was always curious, I kind of thought that swimmers might have a bit of a disadvantage with tri's because they usually are more top-heavy and proportioned differently than most cyclists/runners and also less used to high-impact activity? Although the dedication of being a competitive team swimmer def. is a good point. You've just touched on one of the perennial debates on just about any tri board, what sport is the best background? You'll get tons of answers, but no resolution. USAT does tend to target swimmers and x-country for their youth programs, but also there aren't too many schools with cycling programs. :p John |

Member 48 Seattle | Subject: RE: 13 Week Sprint Training Plan Group Well new shoes are definitely in order. I was just telling my training partner I was going to put in for collection/gift card request from the family for Christmas. I KNOW I need shoes. The ones I have right now are about 5 years old and I'm sure not the best for what I am currently doing. They served me well for regular gym workouts. Thanks for the information on the stretching. I see a lot of people at the gym stretching, then running, so I was following what I thought were the experts. The burn is becoming less, so maybe with time and better fitness, along with the shoes, it will decrease over time. 5 more days!!! |

New user 3 South Florida | Subject: RE: 13 Week Sprint Training Plan Group Hi, my name is Sebastian and I just added the 13 week plan to my log. I was an athlete in college, but triathalons are new to me. I am very excited to get going with day 1 tomorrow. Is this plan based mainly on two-a-days or should the workouts bike/strength, run/swim always be done back to back? Any advice given is greatly appreciated. Peace |

So glad to have you here in the forums. You do not have to do your workouts back-to-back unless designated as a brick, which is usually a bike then run. In fact, do your best to have plenty of time between workouts. Most people do one workout in the morning before work and one at lunch or after work. Let us know how your first day goes. Feel free to ask questions as you get started. Jessica |

Member 18 | Subject: Intro :) Hi! I'm a TOTAL newbie to tri training but everything I've read is so intriguing and I love the variety of the sport. I've been running with hubby, puppy and a training group, as well as doing regular spinning classes. I also swam competitively all through school so even though I'm a little rusty my stroke is still there. I just downloaded my first training plan to begin on Monday, 9/13, and am so looking forward to getting to work. Also looking forward to learning more about this site and the members! |

As a former swimmer, you will have a large advantage in most triathlons. The fitness will come back quickly, too. You may find that you will want to swim more than the training plan suggests, many of them are gauged for first timers all around, the swim may not challenge you after a few weeks. Go with it, but don't be afraid to add a little to the swim. The burning question is, who's faster? Hubby or puppy? :D John |

Elite 4048 Gilbert, Az. | Subject: RE: Intro :) lsfox86 - 2010-09-09 6:57 AM Hey Guys, after doing a bunch of research on this site and others I have a couple questions: Nope. There are a lot people on this site that do their training on mountain bikes, and supplement with stationary at the gym. As far as the running form, the overwhelmingly vast majority of people pick the stride length and pattern that is best suited for them naturally. Just go to a good local running store and have them look at you run and recommend shoes for you. Let them know about your previous injuries. And as far as the treadmill, it's fine to do a lot of your training on it, but also get out on the bike and on the roads for "live" training as well. It's a different feel to the exercise. Especially if/when you get a road bike (or tri bike) the positioning of the stationary cycle will be much different than a road or triathlon specific bike frame. It's pretty close to a MTB position though. John |

Member 18 | Subject: RE: Intro :) Hi Jessica - I am looking at events that are within 100 miles and have dates starting in Jan 2011. With those filters in OH and KY I get - NADA! But, I know that Univ. of Dayton had something last year in mid-January and Miami University (my alma mater) has something March-ish so assuming that they will keep them for 2011, I am shooting for those. There is also a Turkey Trot 10K in Cincinnati I plan to do in Nov. I am recruiting my friends for the 2011 Spring season I'm p?retty much a clue-bag as far as choosing races - can you tell? :P |
