Veteran 164![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: Interesting Central Jersey Group...Meet & Greet? It seems that we have a bunch of people in the central jersey area (actually we all seem to be within 5 mins of 6 Mile Run and I bet we have all passed each other on the trails). Would anybody be interested in actually getting together one night to chat; maybe over a bottle of water? Just an idea as I have seen some N & S Brunswick guys and I am in Milltown? I work from home so I am very flexible on the schedule side? |

New user 57![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group - OPENNo, I am blindly going with what ever my body and the weather can support. My thought has been that 240 is too much weight to be lugging around during training. I am definitely feeling the benefits of losing 20 lbs and realizing that I need to begin to train smarter in order to maximize my results. Do you have any suggestions? |

Not registered for anything yet, we have a tri club here and registration for the 2011 season is on the 18th, there I'll pay my dues and be registered with "Tri BC" and it is my understanding that then I'll be eligible to register for a race |

Expert 819![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group - OPENSteven I would love to join your group. I have tried this before, but the group was not very active and petered out pretty early. I am 39, married for 16 years, father of 3 (4,7,10). This is my 3rd season. I started running in July 2008 when my 36 waist jeans were getting tight. I was then 6'1" and 203lbs. I got in to Tris when I found that I loved the cross training that my run training called for. Did 2 Sprints, an OLY and a Mary in each of the last 2 years. I now weigh about 185 and am looking to get under 180. My 'A' races this year are an OLY in July, Steelhead 70.3 in August and a fall Mary (Hopefully NYC, 2nd year trying). I will do a few Sprints in there and some shorter running races. My biggest issue is keeping a reasonable balance between training and family. In 2009 I did not achieve a very good balance and there was some friction at home, but in 2010 I was better and reached (most of) my goals. I am looking forward to my most challenging year yet. |

Veteran 287![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group - OPENI'm in Hi all, I have the pleasure of knowing Steven and Jules from the non-virtual world. I worked for Steven several years ago and can vouch that he is a great leader and does nothing by half. He and Jules are absolutely great to be around and I am lucky to have them both in my life! Name: Margarita (Rita) Location: Jamison, PA ME: Got into triathlon two years ago after reading about Team Hoyt. I have always loved riding and swimming, so I figured I only needed to learn to how to run for more than a mile without passing out. Well, I actually had to re-learn all three sports. I think getting into this sport is one of the best decisions I ever made in my life, second only to the decision to have a child Unfortunately, my achievements over the past two seasons are nothing to brag about. I'm looking to change it this year and be proud of my race results. I would like to get comfortable with the Olympic distance this year and move up to Half-Ironman next year. Family Status: Married, have a daugher. Current Training: I have been trying to bring my training volume to 6-8 hours a week in the off-season. I'm finishing my MBA degree and it just keeps getting in the way. So, my committment will be to get to and stick with 8 hours of training a week. This is how I am allocating my time:
I love interval training and incorporate it into running and biking sessions. Swimming is more of a challenge. For strength, I'm going to give crossfit a try. Sounds very interesting. Hope it does not kill me. 2011 Races: Philadelphia Broad Street 10-mile Run Black Bear Sprint ? ? Steelman Olympic The rest are undecided, but the plan is to do something approximately every three weeks through the summer. Weightloss: Need to lose about 30 pounds. The plan is to be losing 2 to 3 pounds a week. ? Thank you for starting this group Steven. Edited by margarita 2011-01-10 12:49 PM |

Member 131![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group - OPENIf you have room for one more, I'd really like to join this group! Here's the scoop: Name: Rob Story: I live in Carmel Indiana. Getting ready to age up next month- to the 50-54 group- yikes, I CAN'T be That old!!?! I am pretty dedicated to US Masters swimming, "enjoying" the Mon/Wed/Fri 5:15 AM practices getting in around 8000 - 9000 yards per week. I started in November 2009. I also spend a couple of hours a week on the bike trainer- way too cold to be on the roads this time of year! I haven't been running - currently fighting a heel spur. I am going to a great podiatrist though that is also a marathon runner, so I'm hopefully headed in the right direction! Of the three sports, running is BY FAR the weakest. I hadn't planned on triathlon, but way too many of my fellow swimmers were doing tris, and many with IM's under their belts. Family Status: Married (25 years in April!). My bride also swims Masters with me and is a heck of an athlete. Three kids- one recently graduated college (and swims Masters with us!), the second is a junior in college and swim for a Division 1 school, and the youngest is a sophomore in HS that also swims (sounds like a theme here!). Current training: The aforementioned 8-9k of swimming a week plus bike trainer rides (usually Tuesday and Saturday). I see the doc this Thursday for my foot, and will see if I can start to get on the treadmill. 2010 Races: Carmel (IN) Sprint Tri Carmel IN Freedom Run - 4.5 miles Fishers (IN) Area Sprint Tri Trinity Free Clinic Run - 5k 2011 Races: Carmel Sprint Tri (April 17th, and I'm hoping to be SIGNIFICANTLY faster than last year! Just hope the heel is >80% by then) 500 Festival Mini Marathon (HM) - May Hoping for either the Chicago Olympic Tri -or- the Steelhead (Michigan) Half Ironman in August- that will be something I will need advice on- is a HIM a bridge too far?? Fishers Area Sprint Tri - September Trinity Free Clinic Run - 5k - October (All of this depends on my ability to have a foot that will run, or at least walk very, very quickly!) Weightloss: I'm about 6' 3". I'm pushing almost 25 pounds lost since I started all of this w/o really trying. I wouldn't mind losing another 5 or so to get myself under 200. What I would like / Goals: I have really learned from Masters Swimming how great it is to be with a group and be held accountable (in a friendly way of course!). My goal is to get to a HIM- don't know if I can pull it off this year, but maybe next?? I'm also a guy that is absolutely amazed that I'm even typing this- a year and a half ago, I would have doubled over laughing if somebody told me I would be involved in triathlon! So, can I please join the group?? |

Member 131![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group - OPENWe're on our second- we started with a Cycleops wind trainer- worked fine but was NOISY!! We now have a Cyclops magnetic trainer- you can barely hear it which is great to be able to hear the TV for those exciting indoor rides! I've never used the roller, but have always heard to clear a path in front of you in case you jump the rollers! |

Veteran 287![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group - OPENRollers are going to be much more challenging at the beginning. I have a fluid Cycleops and love it. I love not having to worry about riding off the trainer, plus being able to change resistance and being able to use riser blocks. It's not very noisy and I have no problem hearing the TV. |

Extreme Veteran 444![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() North Brunswick, NJ | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group - OPENThe 3 options below are what my coach gave me last year. Because I wanted him to create customized rides for me and I wanted the visuals of actual Ironman races I went with the computrainer by racermate. I love it (but its very expensive). I've heard good things about the other two as well. -Steven Computrainer - http://www.racermateinc.com/ this is a computer based program. Benefits are that I can actually create a workout for you and you just download it and do it. It also has video options, where you can actually ride IM courses. Most expensive option. I have one and do swear by it. Cyclops - Two options here, first is expensive, and is a stationary bike. I have ridden and it is great. You can create a ride profile, and insert it into your bike computer. i have not done this, but it seems easy. Another benefit, is that the technology is top notch. Power Tap is the most popular and versitle of all Power Meters Kurt Kenitic - these offer a number of options, but I would stay with a fluid trainer. They also have different fly wheels so you can make it more challenging. They sell separately a bike computer that reads power. I believe this is the most economical. It doesn't have the bells and whistles, but you would still be able to do some great things |

Member 131![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group - OPENOkay- need some opinions please! My bride and I are doing some investigating on this. Is it crazy to go from a handful of Sprint Tris to a HIM or is it more logical to do an Olympic before a HIM? If it is crazy, what's the appropriate way to go about it? Year 1 Sprints; Year 2 do an Oly; Year 3 do a HIM??? |
