mwhitlatch - 2011-01-17 10:11 PM Hey Everyone!

Hey James, read your bio and I am about the same age been married 15 years, professional and have 1 child. Figured you would have a great insight on juggling everything.

Want to do the Ironman in Kona in 2012. I have been riding about 20-40 miles every other day. Doing core training here and there. Alot of foam rolling to get the junk out of my muscles.

I also run here and there. I started doing some biking then going out and running.. Man that is HARD... The biggest thing I need to get over is the swimming.
When I was a kid I was like a fish, swallowed a ton of pool water, got violently sick and ever since have mental issues with water...

Weight loss won't be an issue.
Hope to get some great ideas!

Thanks!

Welcome to the group! Kona in 2012 would be so awesome! I can't say I have all the juggling figured out, but I hope I can give you some ideas. Have you done any tris before? and if so, are you planning on any races this year??

Welcome!

Arrrgh...

Another visit to the gym with my new PT last night. I Swear he's trying to kill me!

10 stations with different exercises, 4 times around, 40 stations in total with 1 minute full blast work at each.

I was dead after the first 10 stations.

Okay here we go...

Name: Joe

Story: Isn't all that interesting.  I am a 24 year old graduate of Cal State Northridge (BA in TV/Film Production)  I own my own video production company (www.CodaStudios.net) that just turned 5 last week.  I started racing triathlons in 2006 because I was bored.  I have ADD *yes diagnosed* and I find that it is a lot harder for me to get a work out in if I am not training for a race.

Current Training: Just trying to get to the gym or on the bike or on a run every day (or every other day) at the moment

2010 Races: Wildflower 70.3; Vineman 140.6

2011 Races: I don't know yet, but I would like to race a full or at least a half

Weight loss: I would like to again.  My goal is race weight (the goal is 7% - 10% body fat) a big pain because I love to cook ... paula dean style.

For those of you here who know me from TAN please feel free to add anything that I may have missed

Thanks! Glad to be here
I have yet to do a race. I am just starting out, I believe a month now. I have been running off and on. Was hit on my Harley 3 years ago so I have gotten a little out of shape.

There is a thing here called the triple threat that I will be doing. One is in June, then July and then one in August. Two are mini tris and the last is a olympic tri (I believe that is the term)

I train with a buddy here who is ex semi pro and wants to get back into it and he's been helping me alot. Our goal is to do Kona together.

I bought my race bike already. Specialized Allez. Will be outfitting it with the SRM Red Group as I get closer to any races. Weather is pretty harsh on the bike as it is.

I believe the plan is to do the triple threat to get an idea of how it all works. Then we will be doing the ironman in Coeur d'Alene Idaho to qualify for Kona.  So we'll see, I will have a better idea on how I do once I get in the pool, which I am dreading.....

Count me in.  Here's my deal.

I'm a 41 yr old husband with two girls (7 & 10)  living oustide of Philadelphia.  When I'm not working crazy hours as a corporate attorney, I'm in my second year as a "hooked" triathlete.

When I turned 40 I said I needed to get in the best shape of my life and in mid-life crisis fashion bought a road bike.  I was hooked immediately.  Next came the running.  In 3 months, I dropped 15 pounds and took my body fat down to about 10%. My wife who is a life long swimmer pushed me to swim for the trifecta.

Last year, I signed up for a sprint before I knew how to swim.  Spent countless hours learning Total Immersion and finally ??got the swim thing to click - now I can actually say that I love to swim. In the interim, I had meniscus surgery and on 6/26 I finished my first sprint tri (PhillyTri).  While the experience was awesome, in that event and in my heat, a fellow competitor was lost and his body was found the next morning.  The whole experience gave me perspective and strengthened my resolve to compete.

I did another sprint in August and almost DNF’d after I mistakenly took a decongestant pre-race and panicked in the water.  Ultimately, wound up posting a decent time and crushed my run.  I finished the tri season with an Oly.  Went out hoping to go out in under 3:00 and finished in 2:30.  Finished 2010 with my first half mary.  Again, I set my sights too low and was hoping to run at 8:30 pace – well I ran it at 7:58 pace and had one of those great experiences when reality far exceeds expectations.  I finished the year having lost yet another 10 pounds and body fat at 8.5%. Luckily for me losing weight is not an issue, but keeping weight can be a challenge.

For 2011, my A race is the Eagleman HIM on 6/12 (can’t wait) and my training starts in earnest on 1/24.  I’m also doing the Nation’s Tri in DC on 9/11 and plan on a warmup race in May and another in late July/early August.  I may also go for a fully mary in the late fall in the body holds up.

If I could train everyday, I would. My goals for 2011 is to find the right balance between remaining injury free and pushing myself to the right level.  If I can handle and hold up through the HIM, an IM will be in my future.

Looking forward to the ride.

Joe

So here is an actual training question-

On days when a plan calls for two workouts, but not as a brick, is it ok to move one of the workouts to another day if I have time constraints- or better to move the rest day to earlier in the week and do both workouts in one day as the plan calls for?

For example- today I'm supposed to do a 60 min bike and a 30 min run, not necessiarily as a brick.

I will only have time for the bike.

I'm considering moving the run to tomorrow, where there is only a 2000m swim called for.

However, Saturday is supposed to be my "rest" day according to this plan, and it's easier for me to train on the weekend.  So I could also rest today and just push all workouts back a day.

Which is better?

Does it matter?

Am I overthinking it?

I had to do that for my last training plan it should be fine.  just make sure that you get your rest days in so you don't hurt yourself and your body can recover.  Isn't there an option to customize your training plan?

yayaya I am tired. :P as for answering your question... You are over thinking it.  You can push them all back a day (just make sure sunday's workout isn't a 6 hour brick workout or anything.  I would probably push them back rather than re arrange them so that you give the muscle groups proper rest

My $.02 is this. Trying to work a full work schedule and having a family life means that sometimes workouts will get skipped or moved around. I personally do not think it is a huge deal if something has to be moved. I try and move it to a new day and keep the same schedule, but if I have time for Wed'd workout on Tuesday, then I have no problem switching those days as long as I get it done during the week.
