Don't they cover this in RCIA?  Just speak from the heart - you'll be fine.

I converted to Catholicism in 2005 and am still thankful that I was baptized into the faith and didn't have to do confession before converting (think college, fraternity, yada yada).

Dr. Tom Curran has a book about Confession.  I recently read his book titled "The Mass" and it completely changed the way I approach the Mass and view those around me.  He's coming to speak at our parish this month on Confession and I'm hoping it is as impactful as his other book.

Welcome to the Church!  I hope it is as life altering an experience for you as it has been for me.

I know religion is a personal thing.  There are things about my faith that are not logical, I just beleive them.

But from the outside looking in I have never understood the confession thing.  Why do you have to tell some guy what you did wrong?  Why cant you just pray about it directly to God?

Add me to that list. I've been Catholic my whole life and I think I've only been to confession 2 or 3 times.

And don't tell but, I don't really feel quilty about it......

We're similar to the catholic church.

Except we give interval sessions out at 120% of FTP -rather than 'Hail Marys'.

Found a simple, straight-forward answer here:

You can actually do what ever you want. It is not a sin to not go to confession. It's a sacrament, sort of like a special benefit. It is difficult to talk about your failings to another person (in the early years of the church they did it in front of the whole congregation), it's easy to talk directly to God, especially when it's on your terms. Personally, I believe that anyone who is truly sorry and asks for forgiveness, will be forgiven. I heard a priest tell this tale once about Satan having a conversation about an individual: "When he was sinning, I helped him out by taking away his shame. Now that he's in confession, I gave it back to him."

When you confess your sins directly to God, what does he say to you?

(Full disclosure: I'm overdue for a confession, so after reading this thread I'm going this Saturday)

"Thats not bad, you ought to hear what those Catholics are doing."  Laughing

I appreciate your thoughts on this.  I agree it probably is harder to fess up to another person.  Thanks.
