I think the whole idea of a Father Daughter dance or Mother Son is great.  In fact I take my daughters on daddy daughter dates and they love it, look forward to it in fact.  They are 8 and 6.  They dress up, they chose where we eat...has to be nice.  It teaches them as girls how they should be respected and what a gentelman is.  Anyway, isn't the dad the role model for how a man should treat a woman.

This story is sad but I also think they should have let the kid go to the dance.

i think the idea of a father-daughter dance is creepy and odd, but i also have no relationship with my father.

could you imagine if a school would throw a mother-son dance?  what kid would go to that??

My kids' school has a father-daughter dance each year as a fundraiser, and a mother-son bowling event (also a fund raiser.)  I have only daughters, so the bowling thing is out for us.  But I have gone to the father-daughter dance a couple of times.  There were mothers there, too - either single moms or moms with kids whose dads couldn't make it.  It is not that anyone is excluded, it is just a father-daughter THEME, and mostly attended by fathers and daughters.

Anyways, the point is togetherness, family bonding and so on.  It's not creepy.  Mostly the girls hang out together and the men (and the few mothers) socialize among themselves.  A good time is usually had by all.

Wow! She really looks like you!

I think this looks really fun and now I wonder about trying to do something like this in my town. Is this a school function or community or what? Is it a fundraiser? What time of year, Valentines Day? What is needed, space, decorations, DJ, any food? What is the age range for the girls? We never had anything like this where I grew up but my daughter would really eat this up.

This particular dance was through our church.  I believe it was around valentines day but I can't remember.  The format was kind of dinner and a dance where we had a room full of tables for 2 so we could just talk about whatever.  Then after the dinner they had someone giving dance lessons, like the waltz step box and several others.  It was a lot of fun and I actually learned some stuff.  When we got home my daughter was so excited that she wanted to dance with me in the living room to show off to mom what we learned.

In a world where I get wrapped in work and she's always off with her friends playing it was a really awesome night that let us bond in a whole different way.  It was really cool

I think I've got this one pegged...

"... in response to a complaint from   the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of a single mother who said her daughter was not able to attend a  father-daughter dance."

So the SCHOOL must have told her that without a father, she couldn't come to the dance.  Well that would tick me off as well.  IN all honesty, this IS in violation of the law.  This was caused by a single school administrator's stupidity that ruins it for everyone.  How I think it should've gone...

"You're having a father-daughter dance on [date], but I'm a single mother.  [Girl's name] doesn't have a father."
"That's no big deal.  You can come with her or any other father or parent figure in her life.  We're not going to tell her she can't come because she doesn't have a father in her life."

Non-issue.  Done.  Everyone go have fun and be nice to one another.

Agreed.  This isn't an issue of political correctness.  It's an issue of stupidity.

Not necessarily, they very possible self excluded. Like others have mentioned I've never heard of anyone exclude other father figures from being involved.  Come on, this was a topic on multiple sitcoms in the 80's.  Everyone has figured it out.  Do you really think someone is at the door saying "sorry, I know your Dad died but your uncle cannot stand in for him".
