What? When did that happen?  I hope it is similar in difficulty ... I chose this course for that reason.

Amen!

It is still going to be pretty flat. Not sure why the change though. The run is going to be the problem any way you slice it. Pretty tough run course.

The new bike course should be just as fast. I made the change to reduce the negative traffic impact on that end of the course. This is a huge help for locals and makes the detour much easier. My way to ensure a closed bike course for years to come. Still have great road surfaces and awesome support from law enforcement. I dont expect times to change much at all.

This race has been on my calendar all year, but it became official today when I plunked down the $265 to register. Reserved a campsite at the campgrounds down the road, too. Anyone else camping?

I met with the park last week when I was in Muncie. They still have some spots available, but since the hotels in Muncie and Anderson are booked I expect the campground to start filling up as well.

They didn't say, but made it seem like I could have my pick of sites. I know by the time the race rolls around, they get pretty packed.

We (Muncie triathletes) are out there and on the Cardinal Greenway every day of the week. BTW, they changed the bike course. Check out Muncie Area Fun Squad on Facebook for updates and "group training".

Does anyone know what nutrition is going to be out on the course?

Last year they had Ironman Perform sports drink and water on the bike course. They had Perform, water, and ice on the run course. I believe they also had gels etc but I wasn't looking for anything other than liquids and ice.

I don't see anything yet on the website, but GU, Perform, and Bonk Breaker bars are listed as sponsors so those three are probably a safe bet.

Saturday 6/15 there is a training ride on the course at 9am. Ashley Clifford is hosting the ride. Go to ashleyclifford.com to find out more about it. You can do the 40 mile or 56 mile ride.

I was in a late wave last year. Yes it was hot on the run, but you also get free range of the porta potties once the first couple waves go off. You also benefit from 15-1800 people already out on the bike course in front of you. This does create a minor aerodynamic benefit (and I am not talking about drafting.)

ok gang here it is a review of the new part of the bike course....gggrrrrrrrrr thunk gggrrrrrrrr thunk gggrrrrrrrr thunk, the grrr of course is the tar and gravel paved road that appears to have been done sometime in the last 3 - 4 years (solid but very rough), the thunk is the stress cracks that run horizontally the width about every 10 yards, 15 miles of some of the worst course road I ever seen... I live on this course and train every day here and for the life of me can't understand why they picked that road when there are so many more that are in better shape ( 2 thumbs down WTC)....my advise, make sure you have EVERYTHING torqued down and tightened, your bike is going to vibrate like no tomorrow for close to 16 miles .... also, I see some of you are wondering about hotel, try surrounding towns like.... New Castle, In (10 miles from race sight)...... Winchester, In (10 miles), Daleville, In (10 miles)....

Thanks for the road report, even though it is not the best news. Has it been a windy year?

One of the reasons I chose Muncie was because of the good things I heard about the bike portion of the race. Now the route has been changed and we have rough road conditions to deal with. Great! I hope they have extra support for those 15 miles of rough conditions that we are hearing about.

Unfortunately its not as simple as picking a road that is in "better shape." I spend hundreds of hours a year working with municipalities, Dept Of Trans, Police Dept, etc working on finding routes that work for everyone. We have been incredibly fortunate over the years in Muncie to have used US35 and US36 but the detour routes that were involved for motorist were terrible. We worked with INDOT to come up with a new route that still allows us to use US35 but allows motorist to use US36 to cut over to SR3. Randolph County has been a huge help and allowed us to use CR1100W for the event.

As someone who has been on nearly every Ironman and 70.3 course across the US, I will say the new stretch of road used (CR1100) is no worse than the majority of our courses! It's pretty common. Is it as smooth as using US36? No it is not. The short stretch of road between US35 and CR1100 on CR900 is the worst part as far as road surfaces go. I still expect very fast bike times and we will continue to provide great support out there. Our course guys will make sure you have the best conditions possible.

Looking forward to another great event next weekend, this will be the 34th year for the event in Muncie!

Does anyone know the current water temp? It looks like there are only a few hot days between now and race day.
