The last bunch of green tomatoes I pickled is making me want to grab them all and rip the plants down and be done with them.

One of our ladies finally started laying. The missus found this outside our coop yesterday. I'm surprised it's taken this long. One of our flock turned out to be a rooster and he's been 'pounding' the other seven of them relentlessly for weeks. It's small, but it supposedly takes a few eggs before they get bigger. Of course this size would be perfect for pickling!

So......if he just "turned out to be a rooster".....did you originally get what you thought were 8 hens?  I don't know ANYTHING about chickens....but I'm pretty sure that ain't how you get eggs.

It's a shame you don't live closer or I'd have to go Peter Rabbit on you and raid the garden!

So with the cupboard full of pickles now and eating a much as I can stand, I've started juicing the cukes. Very healthy and tasty. I will add an apple and/or mint and/or ginger or whatever else I find in the fridge to try different combos.

Supposedly all pullets, but inevitable one will get mistakenly put in the wrong crate when they check them so young. The rooster is a big bastard too. Already twice the size of the hens. We started letting them free range this week and he actually corrals them to keep everyone within his line of vision. If one wanders off, he starts squawking until she returns or he'll run and bring her back. Funny part is that our dog helps him!

That is so cool! I had no idea a cock would do that. How much 'free range' do you have? What's to keep them all from wondering off together and not coming back?

When I was a kid my dad and I were gonna go crawfishing after my dad got off work. He called and told me to go kill a mean rooster we had and we'd use him for bait. (roosters are not good eating as they tend to be tough) So, being a idiot....and frankly a little scared of this mean rooster, I didn't want to wring his neck. So I got a shotgun. Big mistake. I blew his head off and the damn thing ran all over the yard slinging blood over me and everything else. Went on for an eternity before he finally fell over. What a mess.

and nobody likes a mouth full of chewy c… rooster.

They're free to explore about 10 acres. Mostly sticking real close to their coop and the house right now.

The above post is a new low in quoting.....OR a gold medal performance in screwing up quoting.....we may never know.  LMAOOOOOOOO

My Grandpa once told me, "if you can't be first be last, at least you'll be remembered".   I've never seen both ends covered.

That's a good point. At any Ironman race the most coverage is on the guys who cross the finish line first and the guys who cross last.
