Ok, I am in, I am joining the long center today and will swim this afternoon. How far, I am really not sure because I have never trained in swimming before so I have not yet established what a goal should be.

Anyone got any suggestions? Would an hour a week be a good starting point? 3 - 20 minute sessions?

I have no clue how my body will respond. I can do 3 -4 hrs in the ocean bodyboarding right now in one shot but you stop and go a lot although I pretty much move most of the time.

1hr per week sounds like a reasonable plan too me.

First lap swim in over 20 years! Went better than expected, managed 48 minutes and took some short 15. 20 second breaks early on then got stronger as I figured out my breathing again and I reduced the stops to a minimum. Not physically tired at all. A hell of a lot easier than 4 hours bodyboarding in strong surf.

Did about 1375 yds. maybe a bit more or less but I lost count. Iknow my 12 yr old daughter did 1000yds and I swam a good 15 - 20 laps more than her. I was shocked to see her keeping up with me. natural swimming talent. Her first time ever swimming laps and she has hardly swum at all in th epast 3 years!

I guess I will go for 12000 yds now that I have a feel for it.

Got in 1500 yds today, 1000 straight and then 2 x 100 and a few hundred slow cooldown. having trouble getting my breathing right, I guess that will come in time.

Gabriella, my daughter, 12 yrs old, second time out swimming laps did 1250 yds straight, Kaelin (8) did 800 yds. I feel old!

Another 36min today, 96min so far in the books.

Figured something out today after some reading yesterday. I was always having an issue with the elbow dropping, getting the body to rotate and finishing my stroke, it all felt out of sync. Well, I read that if you enter the hand in the water just above your head line and drive it forward instead of having the hand out of the water getting airtime to the point out ahead of you, this forces your body to rotate.  Then the pull back with the other arm is much easier to do while the rotation is happening and the elbow will stay up and you can push the hand back for the thumb to thigh rule for the full stroke.

Duh, after ALL this time and I just figured this out!!!

Thanks for that, I was working on technique and was going to do some reading. I will try that, I tend to float my hand out there and drop it in.

The more I listen to TI the better my swimming gets. It has made my swimming much more graceful and less energy intensive. I find a lot of my propulsion comes from the forward hand thrust combined with the kick and the pull becomes a little less significant.

That's exactly what I felt!  Before I was working hard and was going no where slow.  I lessoned the effort, cut strokes and dropped time, it was an amazing feeling!

When I get the stoke down som emore, I want to get some fins and work on the kick more...
