I would definately want to do a 1/2 IM in 2008, and a full IM in 2010, the year I turn 50. I did my first marathon (in fact it was my first running race) the year I turned 40.

That's so cool, Cathy! I can understand that, as part of the reason I'm doing IMAZ in '07 is because I turn 30 in early Feb. I figure, what better way to welcome in a new decade? But an IM at 50 is truly outstanding!

So I'm really pleased with myself today. This morning was my first ever swim meet and it went great! I completely exceeded my own expectations so I'm really pumped.

Congratulations! Wow...I wanna swim like that!

Pam,
I'm going to agree with Elaine about the skating. I don't think that running/biking prepares the ankles for skating. I used to play hockey/ringette as a teenager and seem to remember the same sort of issues at the start of the season.

Do you wear figure skates or hockey skates? Some have more ankle support than others. Also remember that when you are skating, you are pushing off to the side rather than having your feet lined up pretty straight when you are running or biking.

Similarly, I always get sore, tired shins the first couple of times I go snowboarding each winter.

Hi Pam.. my advice for your first marathon.. bring a camera and have fun !!

As far as the skating and sore shins question - it happens to me every year the first time I go skating.. as someone else said you are using muscles in a new way. Skating is a great compliment to running, and lots of fun too !! There is a winter triathlon in Ottawa that combines skating, cross country skiing and running... but I think that's a bit far away from you.

Good luck with the marathon training... I'm also training for a spring marathon.

In the spirit of fostering accountibility, I am happy to report that on the advice of Amy, one of the BT coaches, I have committed to completing the Winter 8wk run focused training program.

In other words, please feel free to give me hell if I start slacking off. I'm starting on Tues Dec 26th, right after I get back from my sister's place at Christmas.

Anybody else going away for Christmas? I'll be in Toronto from the 23rd to the 26th. I am secretly hoping to get in a run on Christmas Day. I did last year. Besides, my sister has one of those fancy steam showers and it is heaven to sit in there after a run on a cold day. Got to take advantage of that eh?

Oh yea!! Steam showers are great. Last Christmas I was in Hawaii and got to run on the beach on Christmas day. It is not the case this Christmas, but I want to get in a run anyways! Have a great day and I had better get over to the gym today!

Hi Everyone,
I would like to say My First Marathon was a Dream and then became a Reality I was so Happy to Finish the Marathon in 1999. I ran Big Sur Marathon It was a wonderful experience. You know it is funny when I think back when I commited to running the Marathon. I did have very bad calf pain. I needed orthotics and then really helped. I was using mucslces that I had never had before and I always felt like my lower legs were healing after many long runs It was a tough road for me. I would soak my legs in ice water after the runs. There was a point that I thought I couldn't do it. I did do it it was mental toughness that got me to train and complete it. The physical pain was secondary I guess. When I hit mile 23 I was so so excited I screamed to some cop on a motorcycle I am ready for Marine Core. I was feeling really good. It is because I followed a wonderful beginner training schedule. I had a Support group from the community at Monterey Hospital. They had Marathon Clinics every other week all the way up to the Marathon and I met some really nice people. Congratulations on doing a Marathon. Keep positivie and stay focused listen to your body and rest when you need to

I'm not going anywhere.. I have to work christmas this year. And I won't get to run on christmas day.

For me the next week will be chaos. The main pool is closed this week and has crazy 'family' swims next week. So I'll concentrate on running, with a long run tomorrow (wed), and try to run thurs, sat and next week on Tues, weds. I have an 8k race on Jan 7, and swimming lessons start again on the 9th. I can see how it is a challenge to fit all the training in for 3 sports.. I still haven't made it to any bike classes.
I also plan in Jan to become a performance member, not sure what level, although I think Gold would be best as I need lots of advice right now.
Keep training girls ... Cathy

So does anyone have any training plans for this weekend? One last workout before the big holiday madness?

I'm going on a 2hr ride with some friends from my tri club and their friends to the airplane boneyard on the airforce base. I'm not with the military, so it's a rare chance to ride on base. I guess they have an 11 mile road that goes straight through that won't have any cars on it, so some folks in the group are going to do a time trial. I'm just going to ride at my pace and check out the planes.

I'm going to my sisters so I'll likely try to do a run or too while I'm there. She's got a recumbant bike though so I could alway get on that and do a bit of spinervals.

Your ride sounds like it will be really interesting. Have fun and I hope Santa finds all of you okay.

The "out of the saddle" intervals must get interesting on a recumbant.

I don't have plans for the holiday so I'm stuck with my standard training schedule :-). I will probably do an 7 mile run on Saturday and a long brick on Sunday but my team isn't doing anything together given the holiday. I've never ran more than 6 miles so it will actually be very cool.

I am at home but home is back in WI and I don't have a gym all the time. I am hoping to keep up with the running that I need to and I don't have a pool for 3 weeks so all swimming is out. But my dad got me a gym membership at his club so I have a full weight room and exercise bikes there. I also have a great bike shop around here that has a computrainer and I am going to go play around with some bike courses there. I would love to take my bike out on the open roads but I don't know if that is going to happen in WI in December. Well, I have got to get going... the Packer/Viking game is on soon and I have got to watch the Packers LOSE!

So here is why my workouts are empty. Wed and Fri are swim days. I HATE my swim workouts. It is so hard for me to carve time out of my day to swim when i could be working, it's cold outside, I have housework, blah, blah, blah. I mean I DREAD the swim. I dread it more than i dread all of your disappointment :-). What are some of your tricks to get your butts out and moving when you really, really, really, REALLY don't want to??? I'm afraid that simply thinking about all of the Leukemia patients I'm training for that can't swim isn't doing it.

I can kind of relate to you. I don't dread the run but I am certainly not a fan at all. When it comes to running I push myself extra hard and set goals for just running. I know that if I want to become any better as an athlete my weakest link has got to get stronger or I can forget finishing my race or my future IM. I guilt myself and in the case of running this year, I am attacking a marathon like it is the only thing that is going to let me breathe my next breath. Does that help? Good luck and just remember that swimming is also the shortest event so the faster you start and the better you get the sooner you will be out of the water and onto the bike!

What is it about swimming you don't like? Have you been swimming for a long time? Is it boring to you? Do you not like the water?
Maybe you can find a friend to meet to swim with and it will help you get motivated. It works with running. If you know someone is going to be there it makes it much easier to do.
As far as a training schedule this week-end I don't have one. I go back in forth in my mind about what I should do. Do I do a run in the rain? Do I sleep in a little then go to the store and shop a little and then ride the bike and then get to the pool for a swim. Its crazy.........I don't have anyone that I know is looking forward to seeing me to run with or bike or swim with it. I know people who are going to be out there on the trail. I think its the holiday week-end that is getting to me. Hee! Hee! I wish Christmas was over and done.
Well we can all look at each others training schedule after Monday and see what everyone did. I say we stay motivated focused and train hard and then give our self a pat on the back. Reach your long term goal. Have a Merry Christmas eveyone. Thanks for the support I'll write after Christmas. :]

Yes, I am bored with swimming so I've ordered the water proof kit for my iPod, that will be a start :-). Really, though, i am full of anxiety with the pool. I'm actually a good swimmer. I don't have a lot of endurance but I have good form. OWS scares me silly and sharing lanes with strangers at the gym is impossible for me to get over. Because of the latter, I usually do my swim workout at night when very few people are there. Since my horrible OWS in November and the evening temperatures down to the 30's in my neck of the woods, I just can't get out there. I think finding a swim buddy may be the only thing thta works this winter. I feel like an idiot admitting my anxiety, but there it is. I'd almost rather quit my commitment to myself and everyone that has donated to my fund then get out there and SWIM! Running, I have learned to love and cycling I always enjoyed.

Its ok. to admit your anxiety about swimming. I think I have one with running a little I cannot stand it when I have to run slow or I run slow it just irks me and makes me angry. I want to be like everyone else and run 8 minute miles. I want to be an abover average runner. I am always placing below 50% that really can get on my nerves.
Swimming, I just love the water. I am trying to perfect my swimming. The best I can. I think I can be a Great swimmer one day. I have tons of faith in my swimming. Well anyways, there is more to life than running, biking, swimming. I believe in keeping things in perspective and not letting over rule me. I am just going to continue to work on swimming, biking, and running and enjoy the journey.
The swimming buddy will work for you. Try it even if you just meet a friend once a week.

Maybe you can find a friend to meet to swim with and it will help you get motivated. It works with running. If you know someone is going to be there it makes it much easier to do.

That's what is getting me through this winter and keeping me swimming. The past 2 winters I would always quit swimming, or only swim a little, and by the time it got warmer and I started hitting the pool again in late January, I had lost all of my endurance. This year I joined Master's, and boy has it helped. They are even holding a workout on Christmas day! At first I didn't know anyone there, and it was really awkward. But then some ladies from my tri club showed up, and they are the same speed as me. We are the slow group, so the coach always has to adjust the workouts for us. But we know what days to expect each other to show up, and if one doesn't show, we hound them about it the following workout. These last few weeks it has been in the high 30's/low 40's and the pool heater isn't working too well (it should be warmer than it is) but I'm still going out there and swimming. There's no way I would have done that last year or the year before.

Whenever I feel like ditching the workout, I think about my key race and then think about bad swims I've had in the past and how I don't want that to happen in my big race coming up. So I tell myself: "You wanna be an Ironman? This is what it takes!" I've told myself that a few times lately.

Anyways, I hope your desire to swim returns. You may just be burned out from it and need a break. But not too long of a break.

I agree about the Master's swim. I like swimming but before I joined the Master's my swim workouts were kind of aimless.
Now when I go to the pool for the Master's sessions:

1) The coach has my workout written right there on the whiteboard so I have a definite goal.

2) The coach is watching me so I'm less likely to slack off. And believe me she will say something to me if I'm not working as hard as usual. (She's not harsh, she just notices)

3) I'm usually sharing a lane with someone I know so we can chit-chat and joke around in rest intervals. That makes it a lot more fun for me.

4) We have fun swim meets to work toward so that helps keep me motivated.

5) Unlike adult lap swims which are a free-for-all and make it hard to get a good workout it, the lanes at Master's swim are well organized.

and lastly...

6) I'm getting feedback on my stroke from the coaches and I can tangibly see how I am getting faster, stronger and fitter. That really helps my motivation too.

So join a Master's group if you can, you won't regret it.

By the way, thanks to all of you for making me get up each and every morning and get all of my workouts done this week.

Merry Christmas, I'm leaving to drive to Toronto in about 5 minutes.

Hey everyone, How much does master's swim normally cost? I have been interested in joining but I am scared because they all know each other and I think it will feel weird.

We had to join US Masters Swimming (USMS) for $38 per year for the insurance. I'm part of AZ Ford Aquatics and it's $40 per month. I used to think that was a lot (my community pool is $50 for a year-round pass) but now I'm getting more instruction and help. Plus, I'm more likely to go 3x per week to get my $40 worth. I think the monthly fees vary from group to group. Ours is held at a university pool, and they have 3 workouts per day and Saturday workouts available. So that may be why this group's fee is higher.

Don't worry too much about meeting a new group. What worked for me was being overly cheery and outgoing, introducing myself to my lane partners and such. Pretty soon you become one of the "regulars." Or you could bring a friend along and join together, and that way you'll know at least one other person.

Hey Everyone,
How is everyone doing out there? Ready for round two of food and fun? I have a question for everyone. How do you handle the boredom of running on the treadmill for long distances? Or is it better to try to do the long runs outside? I just wanted to check with everyone because I am having problems staying entertained on the treadmill.

Thanks and have a good day!
