I just wanted to say that because I'm not doing a triathlon until June this year that I'm not following one of the tri programs.  I'm working on my run, which is my weakest sport, and I'm weight lifting.  On weights days, if I have time, I am doing an alternate cardio, usually the bike, but sometimes the stairmill cause that really works my legs.  I also ride my horse 3 days per week and that is not just goofing around.  We are training for show so it's a very precise sport that requires a high level of cardio fitness, strength, balance, and flexibility.  So it's a workout in itself, I am usually sweaty when I am done.  I need to wear my heart rate monitor one of these days when I ride and see what it's like, but it's definitely a workout.

I plan on following a 12 week program 12 weeks out from my triathlon.  Until then, I'll just be running, weight lifting, and some biking, though I can't do any of that outside until the damn snow melts, which at this rate might not be until April.  I'll probably start swimming again once a week end of Feb so I can get back in the swing of that, but even though I'm not super fast, I'm strong in the pool and can go forever.

So, I just wanted to say that so you don't wonder why I'm not doing a lot of swimming and biking right now.

I'm not doing a set program right now either, Laura. I'm working on running and biking because that's what i have access to at the gym, and i'm going to start swimming every other weekend. When it warms up I'll kick my swimming into gear because I'll have lakes I can swim in every day.

That's great that you will be swimming so much in a lake.  The lakes here are really cold until June, sometimes longer.  I don't have a wetsuit, but I think I will ask for one for my birthday in April.  I also hate getting into the water when it's cold out.  I always warm up, but that first few minutes is enough to put me off the pool in the winter.

Since you are in Michigan I assume your lakes are really cold year round also.  I did my triathlon without a wetsuit in August and the water temp was about 73 degrees.  People thought I was crazy, but once I got going I thought it was a nice temp.  I hated to get in though.

Yeah the lakes are cold but it doesn't bother me if I just jump in. It'd be pointless to pay for access to a pool when my husband's family owns a chunk of beach, not to mention I could ride my bike to a number of small inland lakes!

Laura,

Sorry to hear about your your calf cramping/pain, I have no medical experience but I can tell you what has worked well for me over the years. Seems like you have already taken many of the right steps by getting the right running shoes and stretching.

For everyone it is important that we stretch both before and after excersise, particularly running. I have included links here for both specific calf stretches for Laura and general stretching for all of us. Most people find stretching boring and inconvenient; it's really tempting to skip it or not fully complete the set. That it the quickest way to end up injured so stick with it and it will help to renain injury free. No guarantees, remember even world class athletes get injured.

Calf stretches for Laura

General Stretching Exercises

A good massage can help relieve muscle soreness, last year a member on BT recommended the "The Stick," works great and it's really easy to use. Particularly useful for calves and lower back. Massage Stick[url]

Back to the running shoes, depending on how you run, pronate, suppinate, neutral foot, heel strike, toe strike, mid-foot striker, low arch, high arch, etc. and combinations of the above, you may not get the best shoe for you first time around. Like Laura it's good to get properly fitted for running shoes, preferably by someone who has an interest in the sport. If you have access to a specialist running shop I would recommend using it, far better than a local sports store where the staff may not be as expert.

To help each other keep track of progress it's good to keep training logs up to date. The "Training Log" icon at the top of each page provides easy access.

Keep the questiions coming and have a great weekend.

Fred

Here is a great warm up / cool down you can do to help increase your flexability, the way you feel, and your overall performance:

Do a brief warm up, like a light 5 min on the bike, or some jump rope, and then do this series of dynamic stretches:

http://orgs.jmu.edu/strength/JMU_Summer_2000_WebPage/JMU_Summer_200...

After your workout, do your static stretches, here is a good series:

http://www.t-nation.com/findArticle.do?article=05-085-training

Also, look into getting yourself a good foam roller. They will do WONDERS for your muscles. If you want the scientific back up on the things I just posted let me know and I'll e-mail you some research articles.

Hey everyone. Sorry I have't posted much. I have had a cold and out of action since Monday. Can you believe 2 boxes of kleenex plus a couple smaller packs. My doc said nothing today but maybe Sunday if I am feeling better.

Keep at it everyone! I'll post some updates next week.

George,

Hope you feel better soon. Quite often a rest day is as good as a training day when you are not fully fit. Not as much fun though.

Thanks all for the stretching information.  I have been thinking of getting a massage on that leg to see if they can get the cramps worked out.  Until then I'll try some additional stretches and the foam roller.  They have one of those at the gym.  I'll keep you all posted.  Going out to ride my horse today, in the snow, as it's snowing again.  Sigh....

I feeling better, and cant wait to get back tomorrow.

Have a great day !

Hello all,

I'm having a hard time this month getting up and working out--I don't know what's worse the cold or the darkness. I have managed to do 2 and half miles on the treadmill this week, but for the last 3 days I've been laid out with the flu. Gotta love having elementary school kids! Hope to get back to running Monday.

This has got to be the worst time of year for all athletes who train outside, and colds or flu tend to be around a lot more. Nothing really comes together like it does in the Spring and the main goal is to keep "ticking over" in all 3 disciplines. Don't get down-hearted over erratic training patterns or gaps in your schedule, as the slogan says "Just Do It."

My day yesterday was unrewarding. Went to the pool in the morning, waited 30 minutes for a lane, finally gave up and settled for a sauna and hot tub. Went mountain biking in the afternoon with my son; usual course around Stony Creek trails. Covered just over 5 miles in the cold and snow, fell off twice and now it seems every muscle in my body aches.

Not giving up, ran 3 mile pyramid session on the treadmill last night (building from 11 minutes per mile up tp 7 and the back down to 11 in 90 second increments). Don't really enjoy the treadmill but the Queen "Live at Wembley" DVD made the time go quickly. Not sure if rest of the household enjoyed the music as much.

Back down to the pool today to try for that swim. Either way hot tub should sooth aching muscles.

Have a great Sunday!

So I never really thought about it, but when the dr said "no repetitive movements or strain on your wrist" for my left arm, I didn't put together that swimming would hurt like heck. I went to the pool today with my step daughter and after 1 lap I was in major pain. I guess swimming is going to have to be put off for a month or so until I get my elbow taken care of.

Well, yesterday I had a great ride on my horse. Today I did a 2.5 hour snow shoe. I figure if you can't beat it then join it. I wore my garmin forerunner and just downloaded it all the computer and it was a great workout. We did a lot of climbing. The trail started out at 9400 feet elevation and we climbed up to 10100 feet. We did 2.75 miles, which doesn't sound like a lot, but snowshoeing is really hard work.

Anyhow it was a lot of fun. Now I just gotta get my butt up tomorrow and go to the gym. I haven't decided what I am going to do yet, but I think I might do upper body weights cause I think my legs are fried and running wouldn't be too productive. I'll get on the bike for a bit also. And I have a riding lesson tomorrow night, so those are always rigorous workouts.

Oh, also my calf didn't bother me at all on this hike and I was doing some running in my snowshoes also.  Hopefully that will bleed over to my running....

Thanks.  Sorry about your wrist.  Just think of it as a good time to focus on your other sports and get better at running and cycling.  Injuries suck.  I just got over a broken finger.

I'm going to have to have surgery on my elbow soon, I have to go in for a nerve test next week. After that I'll be in a cast for like 6 weeks, but I'll still be able to run and bike.

boo, no fun.  At least you can still run and bike.  That's all I could do with my broken finger too.  No weights, no swimming, I rode my horse, but it was hard cause I couldn't hold the reins properly.  I hate being injured.  Hopefully 2007 will be injury free for me.

Yeah I'm really frusterated about the no weights thing. As it stands I can't really keep a grip on anything with my left hand. I'm big into weight lifting so taking such a long time off is frusterating for me.

So have any of you picked the triathlons you are going to do this year?  I have chosen the 5430 sprint triathlon in Boulder, CO on June 17.

http://www.5430sports.com/5430sprint.htm

I haven't registered yet, but will before March 15 as the price goes up after that date.  It's 1/2 mile swim, 17 mile bike, 5k run.  It's a bit longer then my last tri, which was my first, so it will be a bigger challenge for me.

I also plan on doing the Copper Triangle bike ride on Aug 4.  Which is 78 miles and 6000 feet of climbing over 3 mountain passes.  http://www.coppertriangle.com

I want to do the Rattlesnake tri again, which is the one I did last year, but it's on the same date as the muddy buddy, which I have wanted to do for 4 years now, but it seems that something always comes up on that date and the the Rattlesnake tri and the muddy buddy are on the same day this year.  So if my girlfriend bails on me for the muddy buddy then I will do the tri.  We'll see what the year brings.

I'm not even completely sure I'm going to be doing one this year. I thought I'd be able to get into the pool early but obviously I can't. I'd like to do the tri in petoskey or mackinaw this year, as they are both close to me, but I don't know if I'll be ready.

Hey everyone. Hope you are all HATING the cold as much as I am. I am back. Light swim yesterday, and light bike and weights in the gym today. Going back to full tilt tomorrow.

PS. "full-tilt" for me is pretty funny! I guess you'd have to witness "his slowness" in action to find this as funny as my boys do.

I didn't do very well yesterday i was feelin like crap though, so about a mile into my jog I had a choice to make: go home or puke on the treadmill. I didn't think the people around me would appreciate the latter so I went home. I did do about 5 miles on the bike, though. I'm planning on stepping up the intensity the next time I go barring any puking-on-everything feeling.

Hope you are all doing well! Springs gonna be here soon we just gotta hold on for a few more months...

By the way, fred... I saw in one of your training logs you're using chains on your bike. What kind of chains are you using and how did they fare for ya?
