Oh, and before I forget, here's an example file that illustrates both methods and shows how to count how many items occur 1, 2, 3, etc times.

Some of the #'s have a last # of X will that change my formula requirements?

as in 123456789X

It gets a little more complicated:

=SUM(IF(FREQUENCY(MATCH(Range,Range,0),MATCH(Range,Range,0))>0,1))

Best of luck (oh, and you really don't want to know how long it took to find this out the first time)

cripes, and I thought sql queries and regex were complicated

You guys ROCK! I'm totally bookmarking this thread, too. I completely agree with the entirely worthless support - they never give you any more than the, "So you just figured out where the on button is, you are still learning about that mouse thing, and you are trying to set up a spreadsheet" answer. ARGH! Some of us really are more computer literate than that, but might actually still need help!

yes, I hate tech support for that very reason, which is why the few times I've ever had to call, I've demanded to talk to tier 2 support.  It's fun calling comcast and trying to explain to a level 1 tech that their amp is out of balance and causing issues with your internet.

However, working in telcom and taking troubleshooting calls from time to time (about cable internet) I can tell you the people who call in claiming to be computer literate are the worst.  I cringe every time someone says they know about computers (or worse yet, they have a buddy that knows computers that set it up for them).  Those people are good for at least a 45 minute call to change IP settings.   I sometimes wish I recorded some of the calls though.  It's funny how people will string together buzz words to try and sound smart.
