974.926 | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Hello fellow Penguins! Sorry for the late post. I used to swim competition for my local swim club in the summers growing up and am probably a little too proud that my 50y Fly record still stands, some 20+ years after I set it. I have one triathlon under my belt since joining beginnertriathlete. I'm hoping to change that next year when the tri season rolls around again. I've been working hard to improve my running, at the expense of everything else (including posting to BT) - so this challenge is the perfect motivator for me to get back in the pool and back to logging workouts. I've got my heart set on the goal of 4500m for the month. I swim at the college pool down the street from work, which closes for their winter break on Dec 21 - I guess I'd better get moving. Good luck to all! Ellie |

Veteran 187 Hertfordshire, England | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Yeah-thats what I keep telling myself, it happened pretty quickly for me with running. I'm hoping it'll happen with cycling too. The thing I'm worried about it I might be drilling the wrong technique in. Hopefully I'll join my local tri club in the new year, and they have coached swim sessions, so right now I hope to just build a good base of fitness. |

Extreme Veteran 461 Minnesota | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns AmbulanceDriver - 2007-12-02 5:25 PM Heya Penguins.... Had a good swim today. I've started reading Total Immersion and tried really hard to follow some of the ideas in there. I think I'm a pretty naturally balanced swimmer (I can float without kicking forever) so it's just a matter of trying to make myself have a little less resistance going through the water. Must have worked because I finished my swimmer's mile in about 1 1/2 minutes less time than previously...all the while doing higher reps. Felt pretty good. On a non swimming front I had an awesome run (well probably better termed a jog) yesterday (well for pitful running me). Managed to double my longest ever run from 4 minutes to 8 minutes (did I mention I'm a pitiful runner?). It was great to realize you get to a point where you're breathing hard but it doesn't really get any harder. As my legs get more and more attuned to running my running lengths should really go up. So, anyone else get into the pool this Sunday? Hope everyone had a great weekend! I started reading TI as well and have started on a few of the drills. It all really makes sense and I have been able to put things together fairly easily. I still have quite a few drills to get through, but I can tell that I am improving already. I'm a VERY new swimmer, so it is nice that I don't have to unlearn bad habits! Are you new at running? I don't think anyone can be pitiful at running! Running is hard work and anyone willing to go out and do it is not pitiful! |

Extreme Veteran 461 Minnesota | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns So far this month I've got in an hour bike ride on the trainer yesterday and a 2 mile run on the treadmill today. It is so cold and snowy here... I've resigned myself to running on a treadmill this winter which will be challenging for me. But running in the sub-freezing temps is even more challenging for me... so I choose the lesser of the two evils! I'm going to ease up on running this month because I start my 1/2 mary training mid-january and I don't want to burn out. I start my century training at the end of december, so I'm trying to get a decent base for that now. No swimming yet, but I'll be able to get in the pool on Wednesday, then after that I can swim whenever I want for the next 2 weeks. |

I cannot believe how out of swim-shape I am after 30 years! I cannot swim more than 50m without taking a break. However, swimming with a pull buoy is easier for me than swimming and kicking. Go figure! |

Elite 3471 Evergreen, CO | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns GREAT job everybody!! And thanks Terri for being head elf!!! I finally got in the pool today after work although I REALLY didn't want to! If it wasn't for this challenge I probably would have skipped it. Haven't been swimming for at least 6 weeks but it wasn't nearly as tough as this time last year when I got in the pool for the first time in YEARS. As usual, and just like running and riding, the 1st few laps were the toughest. Then got somewhat comfortable and focused more on form than on not drowning! Back in the pool on Wed. Susan |

Veteran 187 Hertfordshire, England | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Hey guys, how's it going?! Just did 800m in the pool, fairly good swim, worked on some drills. Still dead slow though. However on a positive note, I was thinking about when I first started swimming for triathlon, and I'd get to the half way point in the pool where the lifeguard sits, and think, 'oh no! I've still got 15m to go!'Made me realise how far I've come. The bad news is, I just can't get to the pool again before next monday!! ah well. |

Veteran 164 Brrr-mont | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Dan, Good job, I think you've got the right attitude! It's so easy to loose sight of that...keep on swimming! On a side note - From the Monterey Aquarium - Penguins swim with surprising grace. A penguin's body is wedge-shaped, like a boat, and moves easily through water. I am SO meant to be a penguin...as long as the bottom part of the wedge is at the bottom and not the top |
