Well, I finished my half ironman on Sunday.  It was not a good day for me, because I started off getting kicked in the face and could not get my goggles to reseal.  Then I am guessing that I probably swaw 1.5 miles because I couldn't site at all and had to swim back to a bouy.

The bike ride was pretty much what I expected, but swallowed two bugs about 5 and 3 miles away from the finish of the bike and was coughing and hacking all the way into transition.

My heart rate never dropped on the run, so I ended up walking the entire 13.1 miles.

My only goal was to finish the half ironman, and I did that.  I am happy that I finished, but not happy with having to walk the run, and my bad experience in the water which was about 20 minutes longer than it should have been.

Just finishing is huge! Worry about the time next year. Enjoy the fact that you have done something that many can not or will not ever try.

Thanks Adam.  My cycling has really improved over the last month or so.  I switched up my day at work in the office to have a shot at an extra group ride day.  I can't wait until I can get a spring training season in next year.

Now it's on to cross season, one more sprint and then planning the events for 2011.  Thinking a half marathon, an olympic tri and/or trying to finally expand the family.

I did a 10K yesterday in the pouring rain. I did well (for me that is Embarassed) considering the conditions. Here's the quick summary:

Finished in 54:48
Placed 131/359
Averaged 8:50/mile

Congratulations on finishing, despite a rough time.  Don't sweat the difficulties - a lot of things can go wrong over 70.3 miles, and you got past all of them.  Now that you have it under your belt, you can worry about working out the kinks and improving next time out - great job!!!

Not to totally hijack this thread, but what does everyone hear use for goggles.  I have tried different brands and though I found something that worked well, but maybe they are just too old to seal well and I should by another pair.

So, there are two questions.

What brand and model of goggles?

How often to purchase them new and throw away the old?

I have a few different brands - Speedo - Ironman - Intex - and they all work and are all a little different. I mostly use the Speedo goggles since they are clear. I don't really need any tint most of the time when I swim.

I've owned a number of goggles and masks in my life. It's all about fit. Last time I bought goggles I spent 45 minutes trying them on.

Goggles should just suction to your face by themselves if they don't then they will most likely leak. If they are old the silicon may be harder then when they were new and that may be causing them to not seal right.

For less than $20 you can find very good goggles it's worth the investment to get goggles that won't leak.

PS – I went with Speedo last time because of the fit issue. I didn’t really like the adjustment on the Speedo goggles (which took a little fiddle time to get right) but the Ironman goggles that the store had just didn’t fit. In the end the Speedo goggles are just fine I use them all the time.

Adam is correct - it's all about the fit, and you have to keep experimenting until you find brands and models that work for you.  I have also found that chlorine wears out the seals and when they start leaking, it's time to replace them.  I usually go through about 2-3 pairs every year.

I usually keep mine in the plastic case they came with, so they don't get ripped or smashed, but I think they are probably old enough that I should replace them.  I can't remember the brand, but they sealed fine the last time in the pool a week before the half ironman, but leaked badly on race day.

Oh well, life happens.

OK,

How long after a HIM do you get to start working out again??????

I was told to stay off for about a week.  I was thinking about a short bike ride tonight at a slow speed.  What could that hurt??/

A light ride maight actually help your recovery.  I find that an easy ride after a big event helps to get some blood flowing in the legs again and minizmizes the pounding that a run would produce.  It helps to reduce the duration and intensity of any residual soreness.

I went to a swimming store in Omaha and talked to a lady that ran the store and told her what I was training for and what problem I had during my HIM.  She gave me every pair of goggle she had in the store that she thought might even come close to fitting and let me try them all on.  The pair that fit the best are the exact same pair I bought on my own after trying on multiple pairs.  I have had people that swim a lot as to what I should buy and tried them and they did not seal.  The only thing that worked was the pair of TYR Technoflex and actually they were the first pair she pulled out and thought it would be best for me.  Maybe what I had were really just old enough they would not seal properly.

Life happens, so I bought them from her and we will see what happens at my next swim.

Hey Guys!  Well, it's been almost a month since anyone has posted.  I'm afraid this thread might be dead, or just that nothing is going on.

Wanted to provide an update.  I have one more sprint tri next weekend, but I competed in my first cyclocross race.  WOW!  What an experience.  BTW, I'm really bad at it and I took last place in my category, but DFL is better than DNF or DNS, right?

The sport is totally insane and I can't wait to practice and try and get better this year.  I have 3 more races I'm already signed up for and I might be competing until Nov 28....who knows.  I doubt I'll be able to compete in that last event unless there is an invite for effort.  hehe!

Great job on the cyclocross finish.  That is more than some of us will probably ever get.

There is really nothing much in our area, but I am trying to find out more about it.  People already think I am nuts, so why not add another sport of insanity.

The thread really has died, but I will continue to look here daily for updates.

Great job again!!!!

Glad to see a few of us are still checking in here!    I still have a couple of events left this season, an Olympic and a 1/2.  I know that most of you have moved on to the 'off-season' phase for this year, but please do keep in touch.  We can both post on the thread, send inspires, or PM.

By the way, Carly, congratulations on your cyclocross race!!

I am done with tri's for the year, but I have found a swim instructor that will help me, and I have found a few people in our small town that are willing to be running partners to try and help me reach my goal of a full marathon in the spring of next year.

Thanks to all for the help this year.
