Went to the doctor today and saw sports medicine Dr. Howman.

He diagnoised my knee problem as  chondromalacia which is a flare up of the petella.  This is what I thought and will just require a couple of weeks of backing off my training.  I am going to try and run an easy 3 miles on treadmill Wed and see how it feels.  He told me it may take about 2-3 weeks of backing off and another couple of weeks of building back up.  It was a load off my mind and I am ready to get back at this and will be hard to back off but I will.  I have not run since Sunday Feb 14th.

As much as it sucks to back off, the positive side is that you know what's wrong and have a plan to move forward.  You've got a lot races coming up.  Do you prioritize them?  I realize that the HIM and IM are obviously big focus points of your season.  But what about that sprint in March?  Could you back off your goals or expectations for that race to allow yourself enough time to heal?  I'm not saying you need to skip it but if go into it knowing that you've lost training time now so that you can be healthy for the end of your season (ie the important races) and you might not perform as well it might make things easier (from a mental standpoint).  Just my 2 cents...

I thank you for your advice.  I think you are right.  I had a century ride coming up this Sunday that I wanted to do but will not.  I think I will try the 30 mile portion or less if my knee starts to hurt any at all.  I had planned on doing the swim portion of the sprint to have an open water swim and depending on how I feel do the bike and run only if leading up to the race my knee feels much better.  If I decide to do it and during the race I don't feel right I will stop.  My goal has been to get the HIM in May and I want to be healthy for that and obviously if I don't get better and am still hurting more than a few weeks from now I will be in jeopardy of not being able to do the HIM.  So - I will let my knee tell me what to do not my brain.  I could fight through the pain but would prolong my recovery.  I am going to back off the total time and distance over the next few weeks and see how I feel.  If I had done this on Saturday I would have not completed 40 miles on the bike because I knew my knee did not feel right about 45 minutes into the ride.  I should have stopped there. The pain was very low during the ride and I kept going.  It came when I was done.

It's not your brain but you heart you have to worry about.  Your brain will tell you your knee is bothering you and your heart will tell you to give it another mile just to see.

If you decide to do the swim and call it a day... leave your bike shoes at home...

Have you looked up any strength or flexibility programs?

Try to hold back.  Taking 2-3 weeks now, may be the difference in you doing the GFT or watching Football this Oct.

I went yesterday and did the longest swim workout yet so far. Felt good at 3500 yds (my new typical length) and pushed it to 4000. 4000 was definitely enough. All my sets were 100s or 200s (and held 1:23-1:31/100 for all of them), so this was a good workout.  30 miles so far this year - on track for 200 easy.

Today I get off early (woohoo!) to go to a dentist appt. (booo...) and should have enough clear time to hit the gym today for a good 2 hrs. (woohoo!).  Swimming and biking are definitely on tap.  Hell, I may just go ahead and run a few miles on the track while I am there and make it a trifecta.

Edit: Mission accomplished. I managed to do strength training at lunch. Did a 2000yd swim, 4 mile run, and a 45 minute bike after work. So I pretty much did everything today. Cool

Knocked out a HIM swim, well a little longer 2150 yards in 30:43.  Or 1:26/100 yards.

Just one of those days.  It helps when you have a pool full of fish to chase.  Instead of a pool full old women splashing around.

Alright, I need some advice on swim coaching options...

I've been taking private lessons and feel like I've been making progress.  I have 4 sessions left which (by sheer dumb luck) will finish up right before I need to start a 12 week program for my first tri.  However, my gym is starting a six week "Stroke Mechanics" clinic next week.  It is basically a set of group lessons.  They had a free trial session last night and my coach recommended I try it, so I went.    I don't want to take two different lessons at the same time and I spoke with my instructor after the class about this and was planning to just continue with her.  She offered something I hadn't thought of, that I could put my remaining sessions on hold and pick up after the clinic ended.

At first I thought I didn't want to do this.  My original plan was to take lessons so I would be comfortable starting a tri program then just working on my on.  However, now that I think more about it and have had a chance to swim a while I starting to believe that continued instruction would be beneficial.  I'm starting to appericate the technical aspects of swimming and think that having someone me with form, etc while starting to train would be a good idea.  What do you guys think?

Ran outside today for the first time in two weeks.  I did  2.5 treadmill run earlier this week.  I did 5 miles this morning and felt fine.  Knee was not 100% but was okay.  Now I am a little sore in and around the knee but I took some IBPROFIN and feels better.  Sunday is the Tour de Cure ride.  I am going to do 30 or 60 miles and not the 100 I planned.  Going to see how it feels.  I rode over 40 last Saturday and it was about what I feel today after doing 5 miles.  It will be nice to get back to my schedule this is really a hard pill to swallow.  I have a sprint triathlon next Sunday I would like to do.  1 mile swim, 18 mile bike, and 5 mile run.  I hope I can work out this week make progress and use this race to just do all three events without setting a goal other than to do the event.  I will make a decision as the week progresses.  I am going ahead and up the training from the little I did this week and see if it gets worse.

I concur - I hope things get better!

On my end I have been having some good training days.  Today set a best 500yd at 6:59.  I definitely could have been faster, but thought I had lots more to do.  A kid throwing up in the pool took care of that.

Completed 60 miles on the Tour De Cure today.  I debated on 60 or 30 mile portion.  I had planned on doing the century but I didn't think that would be wise.  I had my doubts about the 60 but decided to try it.  Knee felt okay on the ride.  It was not painful but I can still fill it is not 100%.  Never the less I got in 60 miles.  It was very flat and I was only running about 17-20MPH when rolling.  Throw in the rest stops and it brought my avg speed down.  I woke up this morning after my 5 mile run and the knee felt great.  I have been taking Celebrex for imflamation and it really makes the knee feel better.  I hope by end of week I won't have to take it.  Right now looks like the sprint triathon for a week from today is on.  I am going to do it and not set any goals just do what I feel I can.  It does feel great to be back out there and doing something.

Good luck on the sprint. I may do a super sprint in 2 weeks just for some race practice. Its the first year for this particular race, which could be sort of sketchy, but it's so short not sure it will be a problem.
In the last 2 days I've put in 5.5 hours on the trainer. For lack of a better way to put it, my taint is destroyed!! Ouch!

I'm going to beat Mark to the punch and post my totals from last week (and last month)...

Monthly bike and swim numbers are pretty small but they really are  just the last week or so.  They are more a reflection of me making more of an effort to get on the bike an into the pool than excuses.

Last Week totals:
Bike:1h 00m  - 17.65 Mi
Run:5h 13m 13s  - 34.85Mi
Swim:2000 Yd

February's totals:
Bike:1h 00m  - 17.65 Mi
Run:16h 23m 59s  - 108.48 Mi
Swim:4100 Yd

I need to step up the biking.  I have been very lazy about getting on the trainer.  Now is the time to start ramping up, though.  My swim volume definitely has to go up, as well, if I am to be ready for May.  Though I have to say it warms my heart to see that I have 450 more yards for the year than our fearless mentor. ;-)

Finished my half marathon in 1:31:02.  Calves and hip flexors are toast.

So did you finish both of your half marathons in the exact same time?
