janeclemo - 2010-04-14 8:05 AM My new plan is now to think of myself as a tortoise on my runs. Slow and steady! I'm just trying to up my mileage as much as possible. I've got a 5k race this weekend, but I'm not going to try and run it that fast. I'll just treat it as a training run.

I have a question about biking, though. My logs are accurate going back about a month and I've been getting about 3-5 hours a week in on the bike, but some of that is on the trainer so I'm not sure about mileage. Can I safely be doing hill and speed drills on the bike without injury? Or should I be treating this like I am now treating my runs with no speedwork or intervals at all?

Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
In short, yes you can. Assuming you pay attention to your legs, there hsould be no issues here. biking, ie more like swimming in this respect, that you can start doing faster stuff MUCH sooner than running, just not as much all the time.

I'm starting to ramp up my cycling and am thinking of using max 15% increase per week.   Reasonable?   I'm also starting out mostly zone 1 to build volume first because I did have problems with my knees last year when I ramped running/cycling.

I am getting stoked. The weather will be beautiful tomorrow and I have gotten my bike nice and tuned up. First outdoor ride since November tomorrow. I cant freaking wait. On the subject of outdoors. What do yall use as far as sunblock. I hate it but I need to use it. I like the spray stuff but you go through so much of it so quick.

no, because of the base it dries FAST.

If you have issues with dry skin though dont use this.

after about 2 min its like you never put anything on.

Okay, so I just got back from our town budget and they are proposing to close the indoor pool where I swim.  The idea is that any indoor pool is highly subsidized (sp?) and I'm quite frankly just pissed off because there's only one gym in town that has a pool and it's craptastic.  Get this, the YEARLY membership for the indoor pool for a resident is $100...for families $150...for seniors $40.  And they can't seem to figure out how to reduce cost!?  It's ridiculous!  Most gyms are at least $30 a month right?

Sorry just needed to vent.  My pool may be closed by June 1st.  And the town manager is a fat bald headed man who says, "closing facilities is hard, but this needs to be done".

Okay...I'm really done now.

RogerWilco - 2010-04-14 2:37 AM  I think I need more drills but I do not know which drills to use. Of course they may change according to my stroke, so I'm posting my last swim recording again in case you may want to watch it: my swimming video

Thanks in advance for ANY help.

Okay...so I watched your video and you actually look like you know what you're doing!  Here are a couple things.  Keep in mind that they are very minor.  I list them at the time they occur in the video:

0:15 - You are sweeping wide with your hands after the finish.  You hand should follow your body and then proceed straight forward in front of the shoulder.
0:34 - Your right hand is noticeably gliding into the water and in front of your head

Just a couple things to work on:
You need to finish your stroke.  As you watch your video, you'll notice that your arm never straigthens out at the end of the pull.  That is a very strong part of the stroke and I'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to the finish.  That should be a big push using your triceps.
2.  You are very consistent and seem to be going straight, but you're not being very efficient.  You're averaging around 24 strokes per length, which some people do, but you can get a lot more glide out of every stroke than you are.  My suggestion would be to practice the glide with a pull buoy between your legs.  On each stroke, focus on that finish and really feel the glide before taking your next stroke.  You should be able to count to 3 between strokes.
3.  Reach straight ahead of your shoulder, not your head.  Exagerate this during your drills...you will feel more work being done by your lats than your shoulder/chest.
4.  As you finish your glide, the very first thing to move should be your hand and forearm.  Don't allow your upper arm to drop before.  You're actually not making this mistake very often, but You can practice using fists to get this straight.
5.  Push off the wall!!  I know there's not wall in open water, but you'll eventually do an indoor!

1:42 is not slow.  Was this your all out effort?  I think you're doing a good job so far.  And interesting breathing technique.  I haven't seen anyone do that before.

Wow that sucks... I am getting ready to go to Ballys.. I dont know if you have ever heard of it but its 29 a month and is a complete gym with 4 25 yard lanes in it. I would go to the local Y but its twice as far away. And I really need to get into the pool once I am told I can. Maybe they will let me with water wings?

Sorry to hear about your pool.

Update: I ran 4 miles today, which is the longest I've run so far. I had to take 2 walking breaks, but I got in the distance & felt good. Thinking of signing up for a 10K this summer to motivate me a little.

Thanks for the tips Jonathan. This was a long distance pace effort, definitely not all-out. But as I said before, I cannot do any 1:40's now.
On the side of breathing, I changed my breathing after this. I now breathe every other stroke, for long distance swims. I generally breathe right but I can use my left side whenever I need it.
I know I'm taking too many strokes. I also know it is not about decreasing stroke count, but mine is too many. You are right, I use 23-24 strokes per 25 meters. And because of that I think my stroke is not efficient.

I will watch my video again for your points 2, 3 and 4 and incorporate some drills for these, thanks again.

I've been working on your point 1, and I THINK I'm pushing better now. Others have also noticed and warned me about it.

I want to ask about pull buoys, or other swimming aids for that matter, I never used these. Can I do the drills without using pull buoys? I try pulling drills, like catch-up with no leg movement. Can I get the same benefit, when I do not kick?

For the 5th note, thanks but I really do not want to. I'm definitely an open water swimmer. I've been swimming long distances whenever I'm at the seaside since I've been 18 (21 years!!!), but this year is the first time I'm actually training for the swim at the pool. I still cannot like the pool. And plus, there are no indoor tri's here. In all Turkey, there are 2 olympic distance triathlons all year long, there are about 6 or 7 sprint distances. Imagine that!

BoobieDr - 2010-04-14 7:58 PM Thanks for the reply Jger,

I'll look back at the drills wilco posted.  I keep debating over doing the swim coach thing ,but i guess i should just bite the bullet and do it.  I'll also look at getting someone to film me swimming...although i might wear my jammers that day rather than my speedo

Sorry, but I have to ask. As I said before, I live in Turkey. I NEVER swam with anything but a speedo (as you call it) all my life. We call it just swimsuit here. Nobody thinks twice about it. It is the apparel you wear when you are going to swim, or just sit at the beach.

I have seen so many jokes, puns here and elsewhere about speedos and I really cannot understand why. Is it so rarely used in the US that wearing it causes jokes from all around?

Actually it is a leftover from the puritan era of our history.
Americans tend to be very self conscious of their bodies and a speedo shows off a lot of body.
So since we sometimes have trouble with our inadequacies we tend to make jokes about them.

About the pool....we don't have a bally's near us.  I wish we did.  Newbz, you're pool is 85 degrees?  I would probably overheat in that.

Yeah we Americans can't get over ourselves enough to feel comfortable in public...and I'm totally being serious about that.

Nice work on the run.  Hopefully the weather holds up so I can also get one in today.  Wanted to run yesterday, but the town budget meeting took over two hours and I could only get the bike in before it started.  We'll see how today goes.

I've looking around for a specific recipe/cooking book.  If anyone has seen something like this, let me know.  I know it has to exist.

I think it's called something like, "the poor athlete's cookbook".  So the book is basically has weekday recipes, separated by week.  The first page of each week is a shopping list of everything you'll need for the week.  It's a super healthy and each week is like less than $50 for all your meals....it may just be dinners.  Then you get five pages after of all the recipes.  Takes all the time for planning and trips back to the grocery store out of the question.

Anyone?

called of my race this weekend, not ready, so i have a few more weeks of decent volume before my half lite on may 8th, so that means trying to make up for lost bike time and a bit of down time on the run.

My daughters swim team practices in a pool that has been 88 degrees.  We have called and complained but their excuse is that other people come in and use the pool for fun.  They also keep the building air temp 2 degrees warmer than the water.  That's right, 90 degrees!  Perfect for having a swim meet with people dressed in sweatshirts in the middle of winter.

I don't know what the water temp is where I swim but its usually not too bad.  Sometimes I will get kinda of hot but it usually only happens when I am doing some hard sets.
