No kidding.  I can do the 100 IM because off the blocks I dolphin half a length and can butterfly quite well if I don't need to breath.

I might be able to hang on for a semblence of fly for 50 in a race, with the help of the diving start.

For for a few months I've been dealing with a torn pyramidalis muscle from an over eager strength training session.

Then I pulled a groin muscle being over eager at swim practice one day doing breast stroke.

Now I've dealing with a hip flexor problem.  All 3 on the left side.  Running sucked yesterday.  My morning run had to be abandoned after 2.25 miles.  After work I went back and got 5 miles in to redeem the day a little.

Gave the hip flexor and groin lots of attention last night...ice, TENS, and aleve.  This morning it felt decent.

Add all that to my achilles and it's getting increasingly tough to run.

How did I get on this subject?  I guess I was being reminded about how I haven't been able to do butterfly or breast stroke in swim practice for a few months now.

Okay guys!    My 5K went fairly well; 33.54.  Not quite my goal or what I had hoped but the race was fun and I felt pretty good.  Can't wait for the next one!  I was somewhat surprised how mental it is.  You can get "caught up" with folks walking, etc. and you just have to push past them.  However, there were times, ergo my final time, that I walked too cause the others were walking!

BTW I'm taking you all up on the 100TT challenge.  I swim tomorrow!

Thinking about doing a Warrior Dash next month!  I have to act fast because slots are almost gone!  Boot Camp, for something different, last night and it was killer!  Loved it!!

bdj6020 - 2011-05-16 8:57 AM Last night I knocked a tile tivet off the kitchen counter and it landed point first on my big toe.  OMG that hurt. I'm going to the doctor later today to get my toe x-rayed and see if I broke it.  Wish me luck.

How's that toe Bryan?

Take 3-4 days off running before you need a month off???

Awesome job on the race Deb!  Sometimes you have to walk...maybe pushed yourself a bit too hard in the begining or something.  Either way...great job!!

Great job on the race Deb.  Pacing is a critical part of 5k, and it's a fine line.  Pushing so hard you have to walk just means you get to learn something from the race.  I'd rather do that than finish and know you left a bunch of effort on the course!

My toe is not broken. Yeah! Just smashed to heck. Will likely lose the nail, possibly permanently. Or it may grow back "funky shaped".  I still can't wear anything other than sandles.  Just having a shoe pressing down on it is unbearable at the moment. I'm hoping I can tolerate my bike shoes by Thursday or Friday.  I don't expect I'll be able to run until next week sometime.  I'm going to try to go to the pool after work tomorrow when they have child care hours and see if I can swim.

Thanks for checking up on it.

That is very good news Brian.  Hopefully the mending process will be quick and you'll be able to get back on the road soon.  Injuries with this sport can be far to frequent much less combining other unrelated injuries.

On my own side note, I ran my last hard workout before that race this weekend.  I ran 5 miles with a WU and CD mile then the 3 in the middle were at what my 10k pace should be.  I ended with the 3 miles at an avg. of 6:53.  I had plenty left in the tank and I wasn't hitting it as fast as I could have if I had been in a 5k race.  It was a good run and I hope it is a nice set up for the race.

Jeff listen to Johnathan, take a few days off.  If I only learned 1 thing after sitting on my A@# for 4 month while healing and then learning to walk and then run again, its to listen to your body and take time off when you need it, see the signs and feel the signs.  I still feel soooo guilty when I take a few days off but I love to be active soooo much more.

DEB! Great race!

Bryan, OUCH Dude, heal fast.

Dirk, power on, let me live through you as a fellow 39+ish age grouper?  And I second Johnathan in saying 6:53 is a pace I drive at, not run.

Nice run Dirk.  I can bike at 6:53 pace, if it's not too hilly!

First 100 TT this morning.  I hit the watch at the end of my first attempt, and it read 2:05.  I’m no Ian Thorpe, but I am an ok swimmer so I scratched my head and realized I had reached a new level in lap counting ineptitude.  Who can’t even count to 4?  Jeez…

So I cooled off a bit with a few 200s and then did another 100 TT (this time only 4 lengths) in 1:20.  I won’t be stealing the crown - duck feet wins again!  I was pretty pleased with that time but know I should really be swimming more.  Once the lake water warms up a bit I’ll get more time in the water.  Given every tri in New England is wetsuit legal, I think I get more bang for the buck on the bike and running.  I know it’s probably bad to lean on the wetsuit crutch, but it is true.

I need to throw something out.  I've been invited to run in a 5k by a friend after work in a few weeks.  I wouldn't really be training for 5k run, but it would fit my schedule fine on my way to pick up my son at his Jui Jistsu class.  It's a week and a half before a B/C tri, so it wouldn't interfere with training at all - I'd just use it as the speed workout for the week.  It's billed as the fastest 5k in the state, as it's a point to point with no hills, and in fact it's a net elevation drop.

The reason I'm hedging is that I don't want to get a time that makes me feel like I'm faster than I really am, but at the same time it would be fun to see how hard and at what time I could run one like this.

It sounds like an easy question...run it!  I don't see any downside.  As long as you know the course is artificially fast you won't get the wrong impression of your performance.  But if you did think you were faster than you are...that has a way of making you faster.

I have an opportunity to have some lactate threshold testing done; running and/or on the bike.  Do you think this is premature for me to have done?

I am hoping for a 1:31:00 at the very best but will be happy with a 1:35:00.  The latter will still be a 3 minute PR for me.  My last HM was 1:38:00.  The 3 minute PR would satisfy me for the most part.  Raceday weather conditions, route elevations, etc. will obviously have contributing factors in how well I perform but most importantly I need to run the race mentally correct to achieve my best performance.  The mental aspect seems to be the hardest thing to control for me.  This involves pacing strategies and "feeling" whatever pain I manage to inflict upon myself during the race, while trying to pace as hard as I can maintain over the distance.........That is the part I hate!  I never want to leave anything on the course!

I guess we'll just have wait and see until Saturday afternoon how everything plays out.  I just hope I don't blow up either but I don't know how to race simply for "fun."  Racing is fun but getting faster is more fun!

Jeff,

Have you tried the "stick" to roll any tightness out?  I just used mine to roll out some achilles tightness a couple of weeks ago.  It hurt while I was doing it but since I did it I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Oh how I would love to get some lactate testing done.  2 reasons I haven't done it, I don't want to spend that kind of money on it and if I had the money I would spend it on more tri related gear, such as a tri-bike.

Personally I wouldn't have the testing done this soon.  Take your time, learn the sport, decide if you want to stick with it.  You must be a pretty competitive person if you are considering having this testing done?  If so, you can gain a lot of valuable training information.

I had a great brick today.  50 minutes with some max intervals on the bike followed by 30 minutes running.  And I'm signed up for the 5k.  Hopefully I'll learn something since I'll run by RPE and not pace.

Jeff, I totally agree with everyone to get those aches straightened out and not let them linger.

I don't know if I've pushed this site before in this group, but the person who got me into this crazy sport is a PT and Ironman(woman) who put it together to help us help ourselves with these types of issues.  There are details on rolling, using stick, self massage, evaluation techniques, stretches, etc.  Doesn't take the place of a doc or a PT, but it's a great resource.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I haven't tried rolling yet.  Actually, aside from the achilles I haven't even done any rehab activities on these muscle injuries at all.  They usually sort themselves out quickly.  It's just now that I'm realizing I need to step up my self-care.

What I've done the last few days has made great improvements.  I took a break from the constant icing of the achilles to apply my ice pack to my hip flexor.  I took aleve.  I have been hooked up to my TENS unit for a few hours this week.  The combination of these things has helped a lot, very quickly.

The aleve is a no brainer, but I really haven't been as free with NSAIDS the last few years as I used to be.  I take coumadin for clotting and they can make my blood thinner yet.

If this is an opportunity for a free test, then I suggest you do it for the experience.  The value you get won't be of any value to you at this point, but it would be gratifying to compare it to a future test to quantify your improvement (or to correlate that metric to the increased pace you run).

But I wouldn't pay for the test, if that's your plan...unless, again, the fun of the experience is worth the cost to you.

Ok everyone, my first tri (sprint) is this Sunday, I just got back from a business trip in NJ and can now totally focus on/obsess on what I need to do before and during the tri.  I was able to get in a 14 mile ride last night at the hotel and plan on a 5k run tomorrow and a short swim (4x250) Friday and then take it easy on Saturday.  I know it is just a sprint so I am not real concerned about nutrition during the tri - just hope I can time my eating prior so I am not starving during the tri.    My main goal is to complete within 1:20 and I am going to really try for a strong steady pace thru all 3 legs.

What words of advice and wisdom can you give me?

Thanks for the input!

Greg

I had a great swim today!

I went for my 500 TT this afternoon and..........well.............I am celebrating a new PR!  I hit the wall at 6:56.  I am extremely pleased with my time.  There was a faster guy in the lane next to me that I used to help pace.  He was actually on his WU  and I was racing.  I left the wall at the beginning just before he did and I stayed slightly ahead of him until I had about 100 yards left.   At this point he was slightly ahead of me.  As much as I wanted to catch him I couldn't do it.  I was running on empty.  I was pretty gassed after the TT but I finished my workout as scheduled.

I am very pleased right now!!!
