Frank,
Good question. I should have tried to swim more freestyle, but everytime I tried, I lost my breath due to the cold water. Much of that was because I had not trained in any OWS. Now, I realize now important that OWS is. It's not so much the other swimmers, as it is the COLD WATER TEMPERATURE. I am going to buy a wetsuit as soon as possible, even if they don't allow wetsuits in my next TRI on June 23rd, which is also in a lake. It also had to do with composure and focus. I was surprised at the effect of the cold water on my breathing and muscles. I wasn't mentally ready. I am a slow swimmer anyway, but the added conditions slowed me down much more. In fact, the swim affected my performance on the bike and run as well. I was more tired than I should have been and my confidence was lower. When I started on the bicycle, I was last starting the bike and remained last until the end of the bike ride. I know that a road/race bike would have made a difference.
Here is my concern: my next tri has a swim that is 100m longer and a bike that is 6 miles longer, so I'm concerned that I could face an even more disappointing performance?

I bought a wetsuit earlier in the year in anticipation of doing a few races in the later summer/early fall in the ocean. I took it to the pool one time to try it on for fit, and it was AMAZING. Literally float on top of the water. When I was done, I was able to float on my back for a few minutes to rest. It is like having a rocket pack on in terms of speed. It took 25-30 seconds per 100 off my times. Maybe speed up the buying might give you a little extra confidence, and leave a little more for the bike? The wetsuit to people like us with no real swimming background makes a huge difference. As for the water, I got really hot in the pool using it, so I am sure it would makes a huge difference in those cold lakes.

As for the bike, a mountain bike is a tough ride against road bikes. I bought a used bike over the internet just to get started. It does not fit exactly right, but good enough for now. I realize i can't compete with people with super bikes that fit right, but that's not who I'm racing against.

Which would be more important to you, a new/used bike or a wetsuit?

Probably the wetsuit. I'm flying home to Dallas tonight and I thought I would go to Sports Authority or something like that to check it out. Any other suggestions?

I think you probably need to go to a tri specific store or a bike shop that sells tri gear. The wetsuits at Sports Authority are probably more for water skiing/surfing. I got mine from trisports.com. 10% discount for BT members. People on BT also really like the promotion suits. Most online retailers will let you send it back if it doesn't fit. Trisports.com gave me a week to take it for a test swim and send it back if it didn't fit. Psychologically, the wetsuit makes a huge difference.
And, thanks for the tips. My first is Sunday.

Tony: I copied this from a post in the general forum:
Just thought I'd pass along a good deal on Zoot Wetsuits. Trisports.com has them 25% off right now (plus an extra 10% off for BT members BT2007 more if you have an upgraded membership).

Dang, I'm jealous about using a wetsuit.  I don't think they probably ever use them here in Florida.  Frank - best wishes for your race tomorrow.  I'll be out of computer range until 6/22 - heading to an inner city mission trip with a bunch of Middle Schooler - what the heck am I doing?  I hope to do some running again but I have no idea where we're staying or what the area will be like so it's a guess as to any workout time in the next week.  Hope everyone stays fit and well and I'll check back in when I return.  I'll be ready to start ramping up for a July 31st twilight race.

Tony: I went swimming in my community pool today to loosen up and I got a dose of the water so cold it shocks your breath away. I also found it hard to breath and to swim. I felt your pain. It sucked. Really constricted my breathing and made it hard to stay submerged long for freesytle. Did I say it sucked?

Frank,
I hope your tri went well yesterday. (Wow, your first tri on Fathers' Day.) My wife and kids surprised me with a Father's Day gift of a wetsuit they bought at Sam's for $40. It goes without saying that I was momentarily speechless. I did not say, "Sorry guys, I can't accept this gift because I'm looking at the Tri Zoot Suit that's on sale for $350." I thanked them over and over again and then went over to my sister's pool and tried it out. It helped in buoyancy, but it did nothing to keep the cold out. That's okay. I was impressed that my wife and kids made such a thoughtful gesture. I may try it out this Saturday at my next sprint tri.

Hi Every one,

I'm back after an unbelievable trip with 29 middle schoolers - I'm tired and feel like I've ingested more sugar and fat than I've eaten in a year.  Went to bed at 1:am and up at 6:am each day - crazy routine and worked hard every day.  Helped out an amazing lady who was born without any arms and legs and yet is a champion swimmer  and is an administrative assistant at the church where we stayed - absolutely unbelievable!  I haven't exercised at all - good thing is it feels like my ankle might be totally better - gonna try a run tomorrow.

Tony - GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!  I can't wait to see how it goes.  I think you're gonna rock!  Hope everyone else is doing well.  Doesn't look like there's been much activity on this site while I've been gone.  Are we still hangin' in there???

Well, I finished the Who Tri's Harder Octomax with a smile! I improved on my swim (because the water was a nice 80 degrees). 500m in 14min 30 sec. I did worse on my bike and run. I'm not going to tell you how bad, but I will say that Missouri must be the hilliest state in the country! I WILL BUY A NEW RACE BIKE TO REPLACE MY MOUNTAIN BIKE!! (And I will do that before my next tri---TBD). I left my running shoes in Texas last weekend, so I bought some Walmart specials Thursday night. My feet were killing me during the race, and I walked a lot. I promise I will do better next time.
Who has the next tri in our group?

TONY: Hills on a mountain bike would be very tough. Sitting up nice and high makes your body a great sail to create all kinds of drag. And, the gearing is hardly meant for speed. Because you gave it all out on the hilly bike, I'm sure your legs were toast for the run. Getting a bike and every the cheapest pedals and shoes for the bike will make a huge difference. I got the cheapest ones I could get, a combo deal at Nashbar.com. I got mike bike used over the internet, but I got lucky. Hard to buy a bike unseen without being able to test the fit. But, ebay and other sites have great deals if you are willing to estimate the size you need. You would be suprised how much cheaper the "no-name" brands can be. Also check out bikesdirect.com.
Glad to hear the swim went well. I don't know about you, but the day after my race, I was loking at the next one. Congratulations on finishing, even with all the difficulty.

Congrats Tony!  You're gonna be a seasoned triathlete before ya know it.  I think your persistent attitude to keep tri'ing no matter what is an inspiration.  The good thing is - you're gonna really fly once you get a road bike and have your running shoes on.

A group I ride with had a bad wreck yesterday morning.  Just got crossed up in a pace line.  One guy is still in the hospital in pretty critical condition with a head injury.  He regained consciousness just this morning but I'm not sure what his prognosis is.  The other had a minor head injury, lots of road rash and a broken rib.  Jack is the guy who is still critical.  Keep him in your thoughts and prayers...and BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

Tony - congratulations on the tri! That's great. I'm looking at new bikes as well - my mountain bike is killing me with the training - I feel like one of those tall ships out there, shirt flapping all over the place...yuck. Good luck on the search, and I'm sure we're all going to want to see it when you get it! Bike porn rocks!

I'm not sure who's next - Jay and I are doing a sprint tri in...jeez, 28 days...Jay's second, my first. Yeah, I'm a tad nervous...

Congrats, Tony.  Nice job, despite the setbacks.  Having to run on Walmart specials just doesn't sound appealing.  Way to get through it all.  Your next one will be so different.

I may have the next tri - July 8.  I still haven't registered, but I should be doing that today.  It'll be an Oly distance as a prep race for my Oct. HIM.  I last tri'd in May and I'm jonesing for another, except for the swim, but if it doesn't start raining this afternoon, I'll be in the pool for a long swim.

Wife and kids departed this morning for a week in the mountains.  I have to stay and work.  Double-edged sword, you know.

Hi all,
Haven't been in the discussion for some time now. Just wanted to y'all know that I completed my first Tri last weekend, and it was great. I'm hooked now. Finished about halfway in the field, and had a great swim for me and did great on the bike. But I have to get my running in order. I felt like everyone ran by me. I want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement.
Thanks

Congrats Wild Bill!  Ain't it fun???!!!!  Glad you're hooked - can't wait to see what race you do next.

Best wishes to whoever races next - Doug I think you're up next!  Have fun and be careful (especially on the bike!).

One of my friends from the bike wreck is getting better - bleeding has stopped in his brain and he is conscious.  The other guy had to go to ICU - seems his broken rib punctured his lung (he's an 80+ yr old triathlete who usually blows our doors off on the bike).  I pray they'll both recover fully.  I really want to ride with this group but I'm scared about wrecking - feel safer by myself but I know I don't push myself as hard as I do in the group.  Ugh...

It's official.  I'm registered for my second Oly of the season - on July 8.  With the weather we've been having, even pools have been closed so my swimming is lacking.  Oh, btw, it's a non-wetsuit swim.

Good job, Bill.  I scoffed when a retired triathlete told me many years ago that you don't do these just for fun - that when your wave goes off, the adreneline kicks in and you really do compete - despite any stated goals of just finishing.

This explains why we keep coming back for more and get hooked after only one.  They are a rush.

Hi all,
Haven't trained a bit all week. Just been workin' and packin'. I'm back in Texas for a couple of days and will be moving about half of our household back to Missouri this weekend. The wife and son are coming up with me to celebrate the 4th, then driving back to Dallas to stay the month of July before moving up with me.
Did y'all hear about the tragedy at the tri I participated in last Saturday? A 36 year old man who was competing in the same Sprint as me drowned in the lake. I didn't know anything about it until a couple of days ago. No one was saying anything after the event was over. Sad. His dad was watching on shore. Here is the link with the article in case you are interested.

The article is really heartbreaking. The organization putting on the tri in which Jay and I are participating just sent out an email about the swim and making sure you can complete the event before you get in the water - and made mention of a few recent tragedies, so this may not be the only one, and makes it that much more depressing. I am sure this spread amongst the tri orgs like wildfire.

I'm doing a training OWS with Jay next weekend. Even though I know I can swim the distance in the pool, there's no way I'd do the tri without doing at least one OWS.

Everyone be careful out there.

Wow. That's really sad. This is the second one I've read about in about a year. Especially bad that his father watched it happen. I can only imagine what his family is going through. It's amazing the race went on for the 3/4 of the racers who were ahead of this happening. Nobody said this stuff waas easy or without risk. Puts that thread I read a few days ago about open water swimming alone to rest.

Tony - Hope the move goes as smoothly as possible.  It is sad about the tragedy at your triathlon.  The other fatality was a woman near here in Tampa at the St. Anthony's tri back in May.  They found her face down in the water after the swim.  She appeared to have been kicked in the face from the reports I heard.  The sport is not without its danger.  Every one be careful out there.
