I'm not sure. Today I'm just kind of disgusted with a lot of things. Being slow and being laughed at by certain people hurts, you know? Some things can't be papered over.

I did do some shopping therapy, courtesy of a person on bikeforums.net when I was debating the costs of swapping out the 1 piece BMX crank on Spud! for a crank that would let me install 9/16" clipless pedals - its a 1/2" crank right now. Guess what? Instead of dropping $150-$200 to do that, for $55 I got a set of adapters from Harris Cyclery in Mass that will screw into the 1/2" threads and then have a 9/16" female adapter. I've already got two sets of SPD pedals at home. So in about a week, Spud! will go clipless.

Being "slow" is relative. I'm willing to bet that there are people slower than you are, just as there are probably people faster than you are. That's life.

Shopping therapy? Sure, why not? If it makes you and Spud! happy, it makes us happy. I'm sure Spud! will appreciate the new hardware.

D001 - 2008-05-15 10:49 AM  But I've never found this site to be "unfriendly" to me. Do what's best for you. If you don't want to do Tri's, then don't.

Sometimes the simplest advice is tha best...

HI NIbbs...

I actually got in the pool today....   and now my body is stiff
Was craving jellybeans so I went to the store and spent $9 on candy... no I won't eat it all myself... well, maybe the jellybeans...

THink I'm gonna geaux heat up my dinner now...

Another hour or so at work....

Yesterday afternoon after not eating enough food for a few days I went for a coffee with a friend and bought 3 large cookies as I wanted to try all the flavours...

I think jelly beans would have been a better choice!

Beth - that's great news! Sorry about the article. I forgot the BT Rulez on that.

Sal - my problem is simply finishing isn't good enough for me. I like to do well, if not win. That's the reason I avoid doing another tri - because I can't do well. Plus issues related to my X, her uberfast BF, and the hell I went through in my divorce, but I won't repeat those here. I'm still hurting on those counts, and a wise person would probably just walk away from all racing and ride my bike and collect butterflies and never race again, but that would be admitting defeat to people I can't admit defeat to (even though, unlike them, I graduated from college, and that's a much bigger accomplishment than winning any triathlon, IMHO).

Crap, I've already said too much.

Fair enough Scott. I just didn't want you trying to convince the Nibbs clan here that good swimmers are ONLY the result of talent and genetics.

I was a poor swimmer. After 4 years I'm a mediocre swimmer who does lots of yards to have a MOP tri swim experience...

I was just defending my peeps/Nibbs. Didn't want anyone to become discouraged thinking that they will never be good swimmers because they weren't born with the right genes. I was terrified of open water and couldn't swim 50 yards. I think I'm proof that with a little bit of confidence (self-psychoanalysis) and A LOT of hard work, someone can do an Ironman swim...I'm halfway there...

I'm of half a mind just to walk away from tris entirely and only race duathlons and run races, but there's no point in me staying here as this is - despite what people say - a triathlon site that really isn't that friendly to people who Do Other Things. I'm thinking that when my current paid membership expires of having marma delete my account and moving on.

don't really know you, but thought I should chime in....this is a fabulous site for all types of athletes - not just triathletes. You do not have to do just triathlons to be a part of this site...if you look at the race reports you will see, runs, centuries, mtn bike races and triathlons. I love the fact that this has such a wide diversity of athletes as well as newbies to elite athletes.... and I am a mtn biker by heart and soul (my true love)...I love to bike and hate - I mean I am trying to like to swim and to run. I have had TONS of support from all levels of athletes on BT! Plus after watching a sporting event on TV last night I heard a comment from one of the announcers that I think relates...All top notch athletes are "TOP NOTCH ATHLETES" only because they work truly hard on the one area that may make them weak...that means for me.....MUCH MORE going to the pool and trying to run longer distances and faster cadence....I suck at swimming... but I will keep trying til I get better....I can tell you this from having a few olympic swimmers that i am related to...they have told me that they had to work really hard to get where they are....and they are always saying to me as I whine how much I hate swimming.....if it was easy EVERYBODY would do it. So with that Scott, I hope you don't throw in the towel...you need to do what you like, but also if you want to become a better swimmer, you need to join a masters team and commit to it at least three times a week and also get a coach to show you technique - I had no idea how mine sucked and since I got shown a few tips, I feel much faster and can cut thru the water quicker!!!...YOU CAN DO IT!!! but you have to put out extra effort and go for it! ok bye bye!

Being slow is not acceptable. If I can't do something well, long-term, I'll quit doing it. Just working out to 'stay in shape' is boring. I have to have a challenge or goal to work to, or its simply drudgery.

then quit, or decide to enjoy it for other reasons

Go onto Tri Talk and see how you get slammed if you say you can't swim and its simply too frustrating to deal with it. They'll chew you several new orifices. If you're a guy, they start questioning your Man Card, and then run you down for not being faster because you don't train hard enough.

People who are naturally gifted to be fast simply do NOT understand how those of us at the lower ends struggle for the gains we get. Its always 'work harder, work harder' but sometimes the gains aren't that great. I've looked at my last year and I didn't improve very much at all, and at 46, I've just got to accept I'm about as good as I'm ever bound to get, and its going to get worse from here on out.

I suspect the reason you're getting slammed is not be because you said you "can't swim," but because you said, "it's simply too frustrating to deal with it."

As I said before, you're going to find people who are "slower" than you. You're also going to find people who are "faster" than you. That's life. Michael Phelps may have a genetics edge, but he still needs to keep training. And I'm willing to bet that he doesn't just play in the pool - but he trains HARD.

Same thing with running and biking. There are always going to be people who are "naturally gifted." Whether or not they have a "genetic edge," they still need to put in the time and effort to really succeed at those activities, and reach their full potential.

I don't even know why I'm even sitting at work tonight. I don't have anything to do, I don't have anything to do at home or anything to look forward to.

So get on the trainer. Or go for a ride or a run. Or call the Blonde and offer to take her out to dinner. Who knows - maybe she'll give you some cheesecake afterwards.

I just want to apologize to everyone here for being such a poop today/lately. I have a lot going on in my head, and its not fair of me to vocalize these issues here because its really not the place for it. I do have a lot to be thankful for... but I'm fundamentally just not happy, and its better for all if I just keep that to myself.

Again, I apologize. There's no need for anyone to respond, you've all been very helpful and have tried to be understanding, and I don't want to throw a wet blanket on anyone else's day.

apology accepted Scott! Cool

everyone has something to look forward to...you just have to find it! come on partner...I have a brother that just lost his wife less then six months ago in an IM competition, and he is now lying in a hospital after being poked and probed and a major surgery last nite....and will be leaving the hospital with a colostomy bag attached to him - but not for another week....I have a dad that is really sick a sister who had an EKG run on her as she was having irregular heart beats... I have a 20 year old cat that just recently passed away - she was like our daughter!!!!, I have a friend who was killed in a car accident a few months ago, I am a 23 year cancer survivor...and I look forward to every single day that I wake. You have to think of the positive things that are in your life, and do things that make you happy...and realize that the more you tear yourself down, the less people want to be around  you. No offense, of course...but I have a few friends that are negative and honestly, this is the last person I will call when I am looking to do something....DONT WORRY...BE HAPPY!!! there are alllllllllllllllllllllll kinds of reasons to rid yourself of the blahs and be happy! it is up to you to find them!
