jsiegs - 2010-04-15 3:41 PM Good luck this weekend Carl!  And anyone else who's racing and I'm being a jerk to for forgetting!

I'm heading out for my first race of the season Saturday too, woohoo!!!!

I am trying to decide whether I want to do a 5k race this Saturday but I have a half mary in 3 weeks and I want to crush my PR for that distance.  I also haven't raced a 5k since for years ago when  ran my first race ever.  So I kinda want to run it too.  There is a 10k race at the same time and I was thiking about running that after the race just to fit the rest of my scheduled 10 miler in.  I don't know.  Any thoughts?

Edit:
BTW, I ran my fastest 5k training run today - 21:51.  It was a little to warm for the pace I started at but I decided to see if I could hang on.  My first mile was 6:48 and than they slowed to knock my average down.  I have wondered recently what my time would be if I just ran one hard mile.  I doubt I will run something like that because it wouldn't serve any purpose other than I could say I ran a ?:?? mile.

I think I might try that.  I wouldn't know what to expect since I haven't done that before.  No matter what it would be a PR for a 5k for me.  I think my first race ever (5k) was 24:55-ish.

newbz - 2010-04-14 9:37 PM you have a YMCA around? In center city philly mine is 35 a month

Yeah, dude, the place is pretty beat though. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to go if it's the only place.
haha thats where i swim now, 35 a month, 2 lane pool, 84 degree water;-)

My daughters swim team practices in a pool that has been 88 degrees.  We have called and complained but their excuse is that other people come in and use the pool for fun.  They also keep the building air temp 2 degrees warmer than the water.  That's right, 90 degrees!  Perfect for having a swim meet with people dressed in sweatshirts in the middle of winter.

I don't know what the water temp is where I swim but its usually not too bad.  Sometimes I will get kinda of hot but it usually only happens when I am doing some hard sets.

I'm really happy with the rec center I go to. It has 2 separate pools. One is a lap pool that they keep pretty cool. The other is a "therapy pool" (it's designed for elderly people to walk/exercise in) that they keep around 88 degrees. This pool is shallow & it's where they have all the little kids swim lessons/ family free swim.

Really nice because when I just go with the kids to play, it's not too cold, but when I go to swim laps it's not too warm.

I usually lap swim in the big pool while my son does his 40 min lesson in the little pool.

Newbz...you're an animal.

Yeah...same here, good luck to all that are racing! I wish I was in the same boat...but I'll be in Boston for the marathon and expo. Hopefully get to watch the 5k and elite mile runs too. Those are always awesome.

called of my race this weekend, not ready, so i have a few more weeks of decent volume before my half lite on may 8th, so that means trying to make up for lost bike time and a bit of down time on the run.

Ahem, butthead...okay, for all of you in the group Newbz was supposed to be coming to the Miami University Race in Ohio this weekend which I will be racing in as my first Tri ever - unfortunately, he is unable to come, but that still doesn't mean that I can't call him a butthead. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. Less than 48 hours out now...holy cow, I've really committed myself. Look forward to catching up with all of you after the race and hearing how everyone's training is going.

dont be hattin, or i might stop offering you advice;-)

waht she is forgetting to mention in her angry ways is the two 9 hours drives, two 3 hours drives to the race site and back, and 50 bucks in tolls, + gas money for all of that, all in about a 3 day time span.

ha, take that.

Just checking in here.  I won't really be able to post until probably Monday.  We finally arrived in Lubbock after 2 days of driving.  The Overton Hotel here is full of triathletes.  It is a great atmosphere.  Most of the city is already flooded.  It should make for a good race.

enjoy the weekend, its awesome.

enjoy the after parties, you'll remember that and the people you meet there much longer than the race (two of my best triathlon friends i met at nationals 3 years ago), and we have stayed in touch, met up for training (even though we lived in 3 diff states), and two of us just ended up living in the same city and have been training together for a while now.

I just finished a 21 mile ride and tried to hammer the whole way.  It looked like there would be a pretty good rain coming and I needed to get this ride in to get back on track for the week.  I had a stiff headwind for about 4.5 miles that slowed me to about 13.5 mph but when I caught the tailwind I was cruising (at least for me).  The tailwinds allowed for probably a 26 mph avg. for 4.5 miles.  The end was an 18 mph avg. so it wasn't too bad for me.

I have a question,  When training on the bike, should I train in aero as much as possible?  I have been riding this way since I have been able to get outside after the weather broke.  It seems to make sense to me that I should train the way I will be racing but I am sure I could benefit from the added wind resistance too.   What say you all?

Yup...I don't remember what you said for your races this year....I would think the longer the distance race, the more time you should spend in the aero position.  You should still be putting the same effort in.

We had a very slight dusting last weekend.  My wife was leaving work and had a little on her car.  It warmed up in an hour and it was all gone.  We have been done with winter for the most part here for a month.

I like running in the snow as long as it's not a wet/icy kind of snow.  It's kinda peaceful and quiet.

I got my second workout of the day in.  I had a swim to make up from missing it last night.  (This whole week has been in complete disarray!)  My swim went well.  I made sure it was a quality workout since I couldn't swim at all last week.  I did some 250's for my main set and felt decent as far as my times.  But I still seem to start at too fast a pace to hold it for the entire set.  I lost about 10 seconds from the first to the last set and I only did 5 sets.  Pacing in the swim seems to be the worst for me.  I may check some running logs from the past to see if it was as hard to pace when I first started running. Am I the only one that has trouble with this?

I love being the first one out in a few inches of nice soft powder, but slush means cold, wet feet.   Oh well...enough whining.

Hardly got any training in this week due to crazy scheduling necessitating tag team parenting.  I had one 4 mi run and then got in a nice 4300 yd swim with my informal masters group.  It felt really good, as I was well rested.  This week is school vacation so I should have a better training week

I had one problem after my run - my hip was sore for a couple days.  Granted I know I need to stretch more - but I've never had hip pain before.  A friend suggested a high IT band issue?  Anyone delt with this?

OK...Noob alert....everyone switch back the throttles to turtle......

I started out swimming (today was my 11th time in the pool) a little over 2wks ago.  1st sessions was ONE 50yd length.....and the rest 25's....for 300yds.

Second week....I worked up to 400yds.....with maybe another 50 or two in there.

Last week....I did 800yd sessions.....and I was doing some 100's....and even swam 200yds, once.

Yesterday....it was pitiful.  I don't know what it was.  But, I didn't have it in me.  I was only able to do 125yds, once....and 2-3 more 100's.  I swam a couple 50's and got the heck outta dodge, disgusted.

Today, I didn't try to push it.  But I don't think I had a 200 in me.  I did 2X50's; 5X100's and 4X50's.....800yds.

My plan is to up the # of 100's for next week to 6....and up my total session to 1,000yds/per.

At some point.....am I just gonna be able to go further?  I'm beginning to get that anxious feeling again......after losing it, somewhat.  My 1st event is in 9wks (300yd pool swim).

Thanks for your input.

jeff

p.s. My goal, when I began, was to be able to swim 600yds - non-stop, by my 1st event.  I upped that to 1,000yds, after reaching the 200yds that once.  Now....I'm doubting myself, again.
