Elite 3223 Hendersonville | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group flots - 2010-12-07 9:29 PM Hi All, Surprise I’m new to the site, although been an on and off visitor for a few years now… more off than on for a while, but that is a reflection of my training too. I’ve been enjoying reading the stories in this thread, especially as I don’t have any training buddies, so thanks people for sharing the love. Here’s my brief story, I’m 33 and living in Sydney Australia. The past few years have seen me focus on career and all but drop training, I’ve completed a couple of Olympics and a sprint and a couple of half marathons, but that was a few years back now. I decided it was time to get back to training and I decided to sign up for the Australian Long Course (Jervis Bay), and that’s what brings me here because I figure a HIM training plan and group to match is a pretty good fit. But wait, the crazy thing is that I’ve only got 14 weeks to train (from a very soft base of almost nothing). I know this is no way to plan or train, but my goal is just to finish and hopefully enjoy the day so I’m hoping I can manage that. As it’s just been a couple of days my starting point so far is a couple of 5km runs, a 20k training ride and no pool yet…. So from here it begins! A big WELCOME to BT! Sounds like you enjoy a challenge! Wishing you fun and success with your training! |

Thanks for the welcome, this will be an interesting experience, I wish I wasn't but I am one of those all or nothing people, it makes for a fun ride but not always pretty. Joining the forum actually makes it feel real, even more so than registering I trained for the Port Maquarie HIM a couple of years ago and had to pull out about 3 weeks out from race day due to moving a job transfer, I was well prepared that time around and it broke my heart, that's why I've got this unfinished business monkey on my back. |

That is going to be a whirlwind of 14 weeks. However, like you said...just keep your goal to ENJOY the day and you will! It is if you go out and start training fast and hard that you will get hurt. |

I train solo so never really had the occasion to ride in a large group. Kinda nervous about it. I need one. I just rode through a freakin monsoon yesterday it was SO windy could hvae used a group. Rode like 23mi in 95 minutes. Was a disaster, and i was the only one stupid/brave enough to be out there So what is worse, econometrics or monsoons? |

Regular 103 Alameda, CA | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group I had a question regarding most of the swim workouts for the 20 week plan. How long of rest do you take between each set? Mine vary depending on what I am doing and how winded I am. Usually if I am doing 400m sets I'll take 2 minutes between each. Where if I am doing some 100m sets, I'll just take 30 - 45 secs. Any ideas? It's probably posted somewhere in the plan, I may have just missed it. |

You don't have to make any firm decisions right now. Just do what you need to do for YOU, and don't feel ANY guilt about what has already come and gone. |

This question comes up a lot, so you are not alone in wondering this. In general, you are doing it right, adjusting according to how you feel. Try working your way down from 2 minutes to 1, then maybe down to 30 seconds. Similarly, moving from 45 sec. to 30 to 15 for 100s is a good plan. |

I missed about two weeks, with a few runs, a swim, and a spin class thrown in as time allowed. I picked back up today and did my swim, and an easy jog just to loosen up. Gonna start keeping my logs up and hope for the best! |

I take about 15-30 sec between 100s and 30-45 between the longer sets. If that is too short of a rest right now, then just work up to it. |

Regular 103 Alameda, CA | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan Group Great, thank you guys for the help. At those rates I might end up drowning, but I will start widdling away at my current breaks. I have another question, I just did a run where it said to do 20 second strides* every 5 minutes. Not really sure what this means. I just did an assumption and opened up my running to make a larger stride and going at a almost sprint pace for those 20 seconds. Is this accurate? Why wouldn't the creator have just said a RPE level to be at for those 20 seconds? How many RPEs does it go up to? 10? |
