Congratulations Steve and Good Luck! I'm sure you will beat your old time.

It’s great to read about everyone’s success and achievements.  Well done to you all.

I’m going for my first ever open water swim.  It’s the Jack Rabbit Jerseyman Open Water Swim at Spruce Run in Clinton, NJ on May 7th ; sprint distance of 0.6 miles.  I’ve gone that far in a 25 yard lap pool but never in open water.

Honestly, I do not expect to finish without having to swim the breast stroke or grabbing hold of a buoy at some point, but if I don’t try I’ll never know.  I also brought my first wetsuit.  I feel like a sausage wearing it and every unflattering ripple shows, but when in Rome…

Stay tuned.

Nice long ride today.  Felt all the feelings of a race...its hard, everything hurts, nothing hurts, i want to stop, i want to go another 56, why am i doing this, i love this sport....and that was before I left the driveway.

Seriously....really good 56 miles.  Fastest ever @ 3hr 15 minute averaged 17.1 MPH which doesn't sound like a lot but its my PR for over 2 hrs.  I love this bike, the aerobars and I are finally good friends.

Doing the BlueCross Broad Street 10 mile in Philly tomorrow with Margarita.

Had an awesome training session with Zero Negative in support of Team Brandon yesterday.   The bay had healthy chop, 40 people all swimming on top of each other.  It sure was a heck of a lot different than sharing a swim lane in the pool.   I started with a feeling of panic, but with some coaching gained a lot of open water confidence.

I highly recommend this clinic if they offer it again.

Had a great race today @ the BlueCross Broad St 10 miler in Philly. Finished in 1:19 with a PR sub 8 min/per mile pace. 14 minutes faster than last year. If I can only keep this pace up for a marathon that would result in a 3:30 finish. One can dream.

I completely agree with Steven - the race was great! I really love this event.

I did better than last year (by 20 minutes) but Steven still had enough time to take a nap while waiting for me to finish Smile Hopefully, my result will go down 20 more minutes next year. Maybe then Steven will only have time for a cup of coffee.

I spent two hours on the trisports website last week trying to decide which one of the two tri suits I liked to buy. It took me so long the deal was no longer available. Smile

A couple of firsts for me after 5 months of training. I rode my bike 19 miles on Saturday (The Great Swap in Chatham) and I swam my first uninterrupted mile on Sunday. 1 mile; 1,760 yards; 1,609 meters; 5,280 feet; 63,360 inches or 158,400 centimeters.

Yes, I am a little stoked.

All I need to do now is do it all in one day and add on a nice six mile run…

Sounds like a good time! I am headed to St. George this weekend and will be swimming my first open water swim and also volunteering for the Ironman down there. I'm a little nervous for the open water but will have some great support from some friends that will be racing. Any tips to avoid the freak out of cold/ open water?

I would say just be prepared for the possibility of panicking in OWS and have a plan to deal with it: backstroke, normalize breething, flip over, try to swim. If not working - do it over. I have no idea how to deal with cold water. I'm considering getting a deep water scuba diving suit, hat, and boots for the Black Bear race - it's going to be chilly Smile

A lot of tips came in the form of entering the water - how long to run and when to begin dolphin diving.   Worked on dolphin diving technique.   Learned a lot of techniques for siting (not just straight ahead, but siting off of objects behind and on both sides.   It helped to hold good position in the water.   Emphasis was placed on going slow and straight rather than swimming eratically.   You may not be as fast, but you will cover a lot less ground.

Huge thanks for the advice, I'm sure there will be a bunch of people warming up for the Ironman and then there will be me trying to swim for the first time and not drown! Only two more days until I can say that I've never swam in open water though so I'm excited. I will let you know how it goes.

Well, since we are talking OWS here, I figured I should share this picture. This is me after an OWS in a small NJ lake before my first tri. Let me just tell you that when my husband saw me approaching him he screamed and try to run away. The lake might have been just a litlle bit muddy.

Haha, That is really funny! That's one good thing about the lake I'll be swimming in is that it is clean, the bad news is that it is really cold!

Good luck,

I'm off to the Devilman in Cumberland County.   I'm teetering on the edge of still being a clydesdale (200+).   I am setting my goals:

Swim .4 = 14 minutes

Bike 20.3 = 70 minutes

Run 4.0 = 32 minutes

With transitions, trying to come in between 2 hours and 2:05.   First time out, let's see if I have realistic goals.

Good luck grant!!!  My only advice is go out waaay slower than you think you should on the swim.  I think that is why I totally panicked and my swim fell apart!!!

Thanks !   I just practiced short events and transitions from home last night.   My two mile run came in at 13:25 which is way beyond my normal pace, I would expect 15:00 - 16:00.  I tend to get highly competitive in these things.   Since this is my first event I am setting my goal to be over 2:05 total in all events.   I'm going to try to psyche myself into going slower than I normally would.   Hopefully, it will keep me from burning out.

Good luck Grant!  Don't overthink it too much, just get out there and have a great time.  The 1st one is always a PR which you'll easily beat next time.   I totally agree with James about starting off the swim too fast.  My first few tri's I had no choice but to get on my back to catch my breath after only a few minutes in the water because I started too fast.

Finished my first ! ! !

Took  the approach of taking it slow.   It all still worked  out:

Time = 1:55:27

Found a lot of areas to improve upon.

Finished my first ! ! !

Congratulations! Good time and group placement! The Sprint should actually be called Sprint +. All the distances (except for the swim) are longer than they usually are.
