mpdiotte - 2011-02-05 2:42 PMI have a question regarding plans. I have the 20 week HIM plan from BT and am 5 weeks in. None of my rides have been over 1:10 for zone 1-2. Now today it has me doing a 3hr ride. It seems to be a big jump. Can that be right?
Sounds like a big jump. Did the total hours for the week go up significantly? That is, did the hrs/week called for in the plan on the bike go from 3 to 6 in one week for example? Or, did they cut out one or two mid week rides in order to pile on the time for a long ride?In the end, I would just do it. Biking isn't going to beat you up like running. If you aren't used to 3hrs on the trainer it could beat your backside up but really that is about it. Especially @ z1-2. I'll never understand why they want people to tool around in z1 and get nothing accomplished but that is another thing.Jamie
So I did only 1.5 hrs on the trainer. All in Z 1-2 thats the longest session on a trainer for me and my a$s kills. Tomorrow is a 9k run

I see a tube of chamois cream and a question about a new saddle in your future!

Speaking of chamois cream...I've never used it before. I did notice that at my bike fitting my seat began to be uncomfortable after a while once it was at the correct height. I know this is a silly quesion and I'm 99% sure of the answer, but I have to ask. Chamois cream goes on the chamois inside the shorts, right?  I may have to try that as well or also could end up with a new saddle (which I believe then requires another fitting?).

I'm supposed to swim today, but I may substitute a short trainer ride instead so I don't have to drive in the fresh snow.

I do have the cream but may need to reapply as it as been awhile since I put some on. It Does seem to help. How often do you use it? I think my seat is good. its a Profile design  tri stryke with titanium rails. It seems to work good it has a cut out and since my second bike fit the numbness is gone.

Hello all from the great white north, Well my first week using my trainer and getting down into aero was a good eye opener, while my spin classes have helped maintain reasonable conditioning it was an eye opener to remember some of the glut muscles in my maximus that don't get used except when we are down in aero position.

Had a grood training week all in all just back form a 13 mile run getting ready for the hypothermic Half marathon in 2 weeks here. todays run was good but nasty 50 k wind made the home leg tough. But a good tough learning to run through it.

Good to hear from you. Embrace the trainer and dump the spin classes. You will be a better cyclist for it as long as you track your #'s (i.e. HR or watt zones). Do it all in aero....just like you plan to race!

Well this week was real crappy as I got next to no training done, and my diet suffered...work deadlines suck, and guess what, I'm working from home today also to meet that deadline.. Undecided

To top it all off, woke up this morning with stuffed sinuses and a headache.  Decided I'd go to the pool anyhow since I hadn't been in over a week.  Urgg...my headache certainly didn't approve and got worse.  I'm suppose to do a 18k long run today also, but I don't think I can pull it off.

Sorry to vent....now back to work. Yell

Sux. Sorry to hear that. I haven't been running in ~ 10 days b/c of the ice/snow storm in Indy. Not too worried b/c my 'A' race isn't until July. Get better.

SUPER BOWL BET:

Scott (sbsmann) and I placed a little SB wager that involves the group.

Steelers win: Scott does QOTD everyday next week (M-F)

Packers win: I do QOTD every day next week (M-F)

Functional Threshold Power (for power users)

Your other question regarding the cream: I slop the stuff on there before every ride. My LBS actually stock a ton of Assos just for me!

Got in a 2 hr ride with 1:45 at 78% FTP, last 15 mins were at 85%. Then, I got in a 15 min run on the treadmill. Very nice brick workout!! Very pleased!! My ultimate goal is to be able to do my HIM at my 75% FTP (and I'm still working on getting that number higher.)
As far as chamois cream goes- I am not shy with it. I slop it right on my stuff. I used to take the time to rub it in the chamois.. but that's valuable time I could be riding!
Happy Superbowl Sunday!!

Start thinking about some QOTD's Jamie...

Heavy weekend of training for me. 2.5 hour group ride yesterday. Today was a solo brick - 2 hour ride, 1.5 hour run. Today's session was lots of hills on the bike and rolling trals on the run so I took it pretty easy. Week 5 of the training plan was a success! I can't believe I'm only 25% of the way there...

Looks like I have QOTD duty this week. Luckily I'm more of a hockey fan than a football fan. Congrats to the Pack.

QOTD:

It's EZ because I'm tired. But your answer to it can make or break a race:

Can you change both your front and rear tire if you flat in a race?

Uh oh. AQOTD: Yes, if I have a tire pump. However, I don't race with a pump, so I guess I'm screwed. LOL!! I need to figure out how the CO2 cartridges work. I have 2 in my bike bag, plus the adaptor thingie but I have no idea how many cartridges it takes to get my tire to 120psi and then how long does it last. Guess I need to do some homework!

AQOD: Having only done sprints to this point, I've only carried 1 tube & 2 CO2s so the answer would be no...just one flat.  But for my HIM, I plan on bringing 2 tubes & 4 CO2s.

Samantha; typically a 16oz CO2 will inflate a 700x23 tire to approx. 110 psi if you do it right...as in you don't waste any.  It's definitely something you need to practice before a race.  Just deflate your tire and re-inflate with a CO2 and see how your "thingy" works.   Keep in mind that the tire will lose pressure faster with CO2 than it does with regular air, so when you're done the race and you get home, deflate the tire and re-inflate with regular air.

AOTD: I typically only carry one spare tube and one CO2. I've had some practice over the years changing flats so I'm comfortable that I'd be able to get 'er done easily in a race setting. Changing the rear tire is always a bigger pain mostly because I hate getting greasy fingers.

For IMTX I'll definitely carry two spare tubes and CO2's. I was riding with my brother once and he got a double pinch flat...he only had one spare, so I gave up mine which made me nervous. It happens. Best to be prepared!

Forgot to add to my original AQOD; changing a flat is not a big deal for me.  I also do mountain bike races and have a flat almost every other ride so I'm use to it. Laughing  I got a flat in my last MTB race last September, with only 4k to go in a 30k race.  I was pissed.  Loss about 7 mins, but that's because I forgot to pack some tire levers so I was using a small stick on found in the bush, but it wasn't working very well..LOL.  Usually takes me 3-5 mins to change a flat.

AOTD:  Can I change both tires? Yes. You didn't ask how long it would take me though. At this point, if I flat I may as well call it a day because it takes me about 30 minutes. I'll definitely be practicing that a lot. That time needs to be a lot less.
