Sarah- I do some training with various groups and also on my own.  I need the variety.  I joined a masters swim team here in January, and now that I know the other swimmers in my lane, it's added motivation to get out of bed on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:45 to go.  I have a couple other teams/groups I train with, and then there are days I just want to be by myself.  But for the cost you mentioned and what other options you have for training, if it was me I'd go for the power meter.

Speaking of power meters and wattage, how do you use that in your training?  I am a novice when it comes to bike stuff, so I am wondering how this affects your training.  I rode the computrainer tonight at the bike shop, and I noticed my watts were lower than everyone else's, even though I was going at about the same speed (granted I was riding with some competitive cyclists).  Just curious on how that works.

On the note of swimming drills- I took an adult novice swim class at the pool I swim at before I joined masters, and we really focused on almost all of the drills you mentioned for the IronFit program.  We also were videotaped 4-6x throughout the 8 weeks of the class, so it was VERY helpful to see how the drills were helping.  I use the drills during my mainsets at masters if I start to feel my form fall apart from fatigue, and it seems to help straighten everything out.

We got more snow today, and now it's supposed to get frigid outside tonight and tomorrow.  Mojo the lizard does not like this weather at all.

On a different but somewhat related note.  How many of you train with a coach/training group vs. training alone?  ........ I do enjoy the group workouts and having that accountability but that is what you guys are for Smile

Well it's about 50-50 for me (50% is with a club and 50% is alone). I like the team spirit and it is not so expensive for me.

And thank of the pressure you put on us to get you ready for the race.

Swam with masters yesterday in the morning, 70 min hard bike with hill repeats last night. Kettlebells and an hour run today.

Considering taking a buyout at work today.  The deal isn't good, but it's better than walking out of here in 1.75 years with nada.  I break even with unemployment and the buyout to social security time so I can avoid this crap hole and make as much doing nothing or writing for mags, or doing my IronMan book or having a chance for another job to open up.  Insurance is covered.  Seems like a no brainer.

@KCGolf:  That sport looks like a ton of fun.  I am not sure what the draw is exactly but I am always glued to the TV during the Olympics watching, could have been all of the hot women that sem to be involved in this sport.  <dunno>

Nothing to add this week, I am down 2 lbs right now which means means my first goal is in sight.  I wen't by the gym last night with the intent to get in my Tempo run but the pool was empty for the first time this year.  No way I was missing out on having a lane to myself.  Did not last long though, ended up sharing with 2 others to circle about 30 minutes in.  I was doing 100 repeats and working on my stroke, which I think I made a breakthrough...just need to make it a habit now.

Our lane certainly had an interesting dynamic.  The young guy who joined let me know how fast he was for some reason but added that he could only go a short distance, 25M apparently.  I am slow by anyone's standard, he was slower.  I guess it's all perspective.  The 3rd to join was super polite and was crazy fast.  Scared the bejeebus out of me the first time he blew past me and I got a big drink of water from his wake.  Cool sharing a lane with someone that had that kind of speed and I took every opportunity to stalk him making mental notes of what he was doing.

Daughter has Soccer tryouts tonight so I will probably do a Tempo run somewhere around the school while she is there.  The bonus is that I will be nowhere near the place when they start recruiting Assistant Coaches.  Having Coached soccer for 3 years at this school already, I vowed to retire after my Son moved on to High School.  Loved Coaching the kids, hated dealing with the Parents.

Photo Weds...Tornado blew right by my house yesterday around lunchtime.  Pretty weird being that it's January.  I was on the interstate as it crossed, see photo of the funnel cloud.  I also got some video of the aftermath.  Dogs where home alone and upstairs I was trying to beat the storm home to get them to a safe place.  Thankfully the storm was only an F1 and missed our neighborhood by about a mile South.  Phew.

Possible funnel cloud at I-264 and Bardstown Rd

Brian- WOW!  That is crazy, glad to hear the storm missed your house!  When I lived in Champaign, IL I saw three tornados, two of them in one day.  They are cool to see, from a far, far distance away from you and your home... Also, I agree with you 100% about soccer parents!  I used to ref youth games...I can't even begin to tell you how many parents I had to send away from the field.  And this was an instructional league.

For picture Wednesday- this picture is from the expo before the Chicago Triathlon this past summer.  They had a booth where you could get your picture with one of the pros crossing the finish line, so me and my husband had some fun with it.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Kevin rest or that cold will hold on forever.  Also I think Ray will fit on that coat much better than Corriveau. LOL

Too many pints and late nights are killing your system. lol   Sound fun though.  When you having a BT curling match I know I am in.  I'm sure ang would do it, she is almost as competitive as me.

I'm not liking your picture so much! :-)  Swimming with others is a great motivator as I tend to push to keep up with others in the pool.

Talk about swimming with people with crazy speed I have a girl that I train with sometimes (not swimming) that was on the U23 USA team and a hopeful for the 2016 games.  She does kick board drills faster than I swim.  Her ITU swim time is around 18mins and she is a "slow" runner at 40-42mins run.

Great pictures today by everyone!

Here are my two oldest kids doing their first triathlon in Oshkosh, WI last summer.  They were so excited to wear my Ironman 70.3 swim caps even thought they didn't even get their head wet in the swim! They absolutely loved it and are already talking about this years race.

Happy hump day!  Great pictures!  here's a couple of my dog and running buddy Murphy. The first one is from a couple year's ago, his first time at the doggy beach and the other is one of the few I took of him as a puppy.

KC - I hope you feel better soon!  I'm still getting over my cold. Ugh, it's sticking around longer than I thought.  Hopefully I'll still be ok for the Polar Dash half marathon this Saturday.

Tim - yes, that is some very expensive salt. Smile

Jennifers - your wattage may have been lower b/c your RPMs may have been higher (i.e. you were in a lower gear) and so even though you were going the same speed, the force with which you're pressing down on your pedals was less than those next to you.  (Coach/Scott, correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Fun fact: did you know Mark Cavendish's max power output is somewhere around 2000! Surprised

Went to powerplate this morning and will swim tonight at the gym.  I've got a business trip next week and planning on going to a masters workout the following week.  Luckily, it looks like travel is going to be pretty minimal for this phase of the project so I won't have to worry about finding pools, gyms, etc. while I'm training. Woo hoo!

Tim - that is funny Laughing I laughed out loud. Anyway, it is not the salt you are paying for, it is the shaker Smile

tmoran80 - 2012-01-17 3:38 PM

That is some pricey salt!Surprised

saskat - 2012-01-17 1:23 PM

The cost for 6 months with the training group is $1250. It is quite pricey.

I told him I was dehydrated and he pulled out a salt shaker for me.
