Most of you have very busy lives with families, jobs, crazy expectations for yourselves. You don't know how you guys just being you has kept me positive during my time away from training...sleep studies, cat scans, lots of blood work, and general lethargy have been trying on my body and mind. I thank each of you for the positive comments and for generally bring you. I have my first tri of the season coming up this weekend. I haven't been on my tri bike yet this year and haven't swam in over a month. I don't have crazy expectation s for the race, but have a fire in my belly to sort of show myself that I am strong and can, like all of you, push through. I do have some sort of fun news. I took about 11 minutes off my 10k time from a couple years ago with a moderately paced 8:30. I felt tired but it was great to get the competitive juices flowing. Although the doc says my vision could be permanently "double" I am back in action with you junkies. Thanks for keeping it going without me. Sorry to hear your still having problems with the vision. Hopefully it will clear up. Sounds like you had a good run though. Congrats and good luck in the race this weekend. Not sure how much training I will get in this week, I'm doings he daddy daycare thing as my wife I going back to work. She's a teacher and has to finish up the last few weeks. Our moms will take over or the next few weeks until she is off for the summer, so it's just the next few days. I could use the break anyway as I'm feeling pretty tired and with another race coming up this weekend I'd like to be feeling good. Would you like me to share some of my favorite workouts as a stay at home parent? Let's see, there was the time I ran laps literally around the house while my daughter was napping because the treadmill always woke her up. I figured if I can manage on the treadmill and not die of boredom then I can handle a few miles of laps outside. Got some weird looks from the neighbor for that . Seriously though, enjoy the rest and recovery! |

I used to work on my kick every workout but I've quit doing it for the past year or so. I think it is a good thing to work to help develop power from your legs. Granted, you get little propulsion from your legs but you can get something and everything counts when racing. I suggest working some fins into a training regimen to help conquer this. I would kick 200-300 yards a workout and really try to keep the kick sets at a high effort level. Remember to kick from the hips, don't kick from the knees. You have more power when using your legs like a long whip rather than a short kick from the knees. Also don't try to open your kick a lot. The kick can be pretty powerful even when appearing like small, subtle movements. Your feet also don't need to clear the water and make splashes. My feet almost never break the waters' surface. |

I'm glad to see you back in front of a computer for a few minutes and being able to take some time to post an update. I can't imagine the double vision lasting long. Is there nothing the doc thinks can be done to correct the problem? I know there are risks with that type of surgery but hopefully there will be options. The double vision will certainly provide more struggles for racing this weekend but I have confidence you'll do fine. It sounds like you've been getting some good running in too. Knocking 11 minutes of a 10k is killer! I have only run a couple of standalone 10k races and really don't know what my time would even be if I were to race one soon. Make sure we see something from the race this weekend too. We need to see how things are going. |

It's great to see you and Ryan have a strong commitment to each other and your children. Have fun in Barbados but know that I, for one, am insanely jealous. In the next couple of years I hope Lis and I can take a trip similar to that. So many years of tuition to parochial school has kept us from venturing that far. |

Expert 1151 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Hi everyone, did a spinning class and a 30 min run/walk on the treadmill Monday (Tony, don't know how you did 2 hours!) and I will be doing the same today. My Achilles tendons were not so happy and demanded that I immediately lose 30 lbs. (well working on that, again ugh!) My new full time job appears to be buying and cutting up fruit and veggies for my kids. I now understand the expression being eaten out of house and home! All 3 kids started swim lessons this week. My two boys are now at the age where they are starting to learn specific strokes (as opposed to just singing fish songs and being tricked into putting their faces in the water) so that is cool. My 3 year old daughter refused to go into the pool her first lesson (I can relate to that- but my pool workout is scheduled for Thurs- I might cry too). She likes the pool, but not following the instructors directions. Hopefully we will get her in there today. Congrats on your 10 year anniversary. So jealous of your trip. My husband and I celebrated out 9 year anniversary about a month ago and celebrated with a trip to the supermarket to buy more fruit. We are thankful we have made it through in one piece more or less . |

Actually it's not been bad so far but I can't wait to finish up tomorrow and head on home. There is way too much good food at these training sessions I'm afraid to see what the scale says when I get back. I'll be leaving in the early afternoon tomorrow but I will be home very late or very early depending on how you look at it tomorrow night. I just want to get back home and see my family and man do I need to get back to my IM training. It'll be great to get home. The trip to the stadium was the highlight I would bet! That place is amazing - no matter how many times you see it on TV or hear about it, seeing the real thing in person is staggering. |

What does everyone like to do for their workouts when you and out of town/ on vacation? Congrats! That's an awesome gift to each other. Workouts out of town depend on the couple and what you're doing. Kathy and I run together whenever possible, so if we get away alone (it happened once two springs ago!) we run pretty much every day. I swam in the ocean while she did the beach thing, and I got in a few spin bike rides while she napped. All of this was pre-approved! The key is to just decide with each other what makes sense for you. In my case, Kathy knows I'm happiest when I get to train so she's pretty good about letting me figure out ways to work in sessions without disrupting the family, or in this case the vacation. But for us now, part of what we enjoy about the vacation is the training piece, so that makes it easier. |

I'm going to respectfully disagree with Dirk on this one. I'm not big on swim training in general though, so take this with a pound of salt. The amount of additional speed you get with your kick in swimming is pretty minimal. If you are racing swimming only, and you're event is fairly short, a powerful kick can make the different between winning and 5th place. But the difference in time really isn't that much. And the fact that after a tri swim you have the two longest parts of the race, both of which are leg intensive, says that your legs should be as fresh as possible getting out of the water. Additionally, the time you spent focusing on improving your kicking could maybe better be spent on other tri training, or a different swim skill (high elbow catch?). I think the main function of the kick in tri swimming, and even long distance swim swimming, is for balance and control. This all assumes that your kick is at least coordinated with your overall stroke and not detrimental to your swimming. If you're fighting for a top podium spot in sprints or Olympic distance I might change my mind on this. |

While I agree that spending time working on your kick won't make you faster from propulsion alone, I think I helps reinforce good balance, thereby reducing drag and making you faster. I don't work on my kick every session but I try too at least once a week where I do a kick set and concentrate on balance and not scissoring my legs to much. Usually ill do a 200m free, 200m kick, 200m pull, 200m free warm up before my main set. |

The kick can be pretty powerful even when appearing like small, subtle movements. Your feet also don't need to clear the water and make splashes. My feet almost never break the waters' surface. This is somewhat my point. I wouldn't expect substantial speed gains at all. However, stronger legs make for a better swim to bike and run transition because of better efficiency. Working on a strong kick will develop better muscle response, balance and give stronger kick with the same effort used with a weak kick, thereby giving a slightly faster swim leg, albeit only a few seconds. When I stopped working my kick I as in marathon training in 2011 (I had to think about when I quit) and my legs were fatigued much of the time, either from running or cycling. I simply didn't want to keep drawing more fatigue into an already fatigued muscle. I had begun to do some kicking a couple of months ago and just quit because I was making excuses for not doing them anymore. |

Plus, I drive there and back and usually need a few days to recover once back (frowny face!). I looked at the calendar view of each of these plans and they appear, on the surface, to be identical. The differences being that you would choose to follow (and test) RPE or HR. I personally would recommend the HR plan because I think it will be a little better focused. However, RPE is really important, as Jeff outlined in a much earlier post. HR is a great tool and can really help you figure out to a much closer level some really good training zones. You can quickly see that you have been training to easily or to hard after completing the testing required to accurately determine HR zones. Now, I don't think you need to purchase the plan at $35 a month to complete it unless you don't want to spend the time doing some of your own research. There are plenty of avenues to complete the research required. You can post question in the main forum, here in the group and always google. I believe you can get a lot of info on the Ironman website as well. To be honest, I simply apply the things fro Oly distance races and increase the volume/intensity by a percentage. (I also have been done to over train fro various distances by increasing my volume to allow for better periodization.) My personal recommendation is HR. How you get the information is entirely up to you. One thing about the beginner plans is that I think they are run light, while the bike seems to be much closer to what I would like to see. I am sure they are trying to set the run up a little better by having a slightly higher cycling volume but really, the volume for the 2 aren't far apart. My suggestion would be to hold the higher volume that you have been doing currently, at the start of the plan and allow the plan to catch up to you. In so doing you'll get a much better benefit of the higher volume/endurance training than by allowing a bit of a setback to shorter training times. |

"a light and relaxed kick will help with balance and core strength." I still don't think you need to do a ton of kick work, or even dedicated kick sets, to get your kick good enough for balance and control. Damn Bruins, by the way. |

At least the Sox are playing well, lol. On a similar note, I might be down in Boston next September to play hockey. We are putting together a team from officers in the province to play Boston PD at the TD Garden. I hope to know in the next few weeks if I am able to make it. Unfortunately the Sox and the Pats are on the road that weekend. I wanted to get down for a Pats game this year, but I don't think I could convince my wife to let me take two trips down. Or could I. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Interesting discussion about the swim kick! When I started out in swim for fitness class several years ago we would do kick sets. There was a young guy who swam about the same speed as I did and we would always race each other or try to one up each other but when it came to kick sets he could not keep up with me. When we did pull sets with the bouy I could not keep up with him. I always thought if we could take my kick and his pull we'd have a great stroke . Now I don't do kick sets much anymore but mostly because it bothers my back. And they are really boring....... |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Took my hybrid out for another ride last night and I actually had a lot of fun! I road a little bit of the trail on it at the state park and enjoyed feeling like I could just go wherever I wanted. I really need to get something done with the pedals though - these platforms really stink. And only one brake works and that one does not actually stop me, just slows me down . Should I put my speed play pedals from my road bike on the hybrid? We got the call about the chihuahua and brought him home Tuesday! The kids are so happy. My son keeps walking around saying "I can't believe I'm walking a chihuahua. Is this a dream?" He is a good boy and seems like he was well taken care of. He hopped right onto the new couch and has been sleeping in our bed like he has lived here for 10 years! BUT, this morning I caught him peeing in my daughters room so we will have to watch that. |

Although I am the most inconsistent mentor ever, I hope you know I am among the most proud. Having taken the better part of the last hour to comb through all of the posts I couldn't help but smile and even laugh out loud. The resiliency of this group is just amazing to me. Jonathan - Glad to see posting and hope the docs can get to hte bottom of what is going on. Congrats on shaving of 11 minutes, that's big number and for me it's like an entire mile!

Veteran 454 Cairo, GA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by wbayek Originally posted by DirkP I'm going to respectfully disagree with Dirk on this one. Originally posted by jenbmosley More on the topic of SWIMMING... Any of you ever work on your kick? Today was the first time in almost 8 months I grabbed a kick board and worked on my kick. Honestly, I feel like a boat anchor (someone else's term in here used a while back) when I attempt to work on my kick, but for some reason I decided to change it up and work on my kick a bit today. At least I don't go backwards, it does take me almost a minute to go 25 yards though. Does working on your swim kick help and what do you do to include it in your workouts? HHmmmm a podium spot in Sprints.... not really. I thank both of you for your thoughts. I did notice something when working on my kick.... I noticed when I followed these laps up with a 500 yard freestyle, I did feel a little faster, like kicking was a little easier. I know I need to work on getting my kick smaller, I've noticed some of the awesome swimmers in the pool have a small kick. For the time being, I am going to try and tie in a little kick work in, since my races are still sprint, and my first Oly will be in August. My first HIM will be in April. |
