STEVEB,

Another question of running shoe guru.

Zoot TT = Neutral

Zoot Tempo = Stability

Which is for runners like me? I don't recall and my quick search got me more confused.

DENISE -

I would replace triathlon with defenestration. Plain and simple!

In all seriousness (moi?), if I couldn't do ANY of swimming and bikeing and running, I would hang out in weight rooms, lifting. I love the mental aspects of it, and the physical benefits don't hurt, either. Rowing (indoor, on a Concept II) could maybe get my attention, but I'm not sure it could sustain it.

I play the guitar a fair bit now, as it is, and would do that more. I would continue to read, read, read. I will take up sketching, somthing I've been fixing to do for a very long time. I would return to be a creative cook. Birdwatching is always worthwhile.

But, of course, you've got to remember --- I would defenestrate before activating any of those options!

DENISE again -

Now, if you're not the proverbial pot calling this here kettle black - you and your five straight weekends of racing. Suddenly, I feel like a slacker!

"Chase The Police" sounds like a hoot -- love the concept for the buoys!

AND ---- you will not even come close to finishing last. Perish the thought!!

Yo!

Yup, I've got me a trainer, and it's a fluid, and it's by Kurt Kinetic. Kurt makes great trainers, and I've had mine for about 7 or 8 yearswir=th no ill effects other than a wee bit of squeakiness at times.

Fluids are nice and quiet. Got neighbors on either side of you, or directlty above or below? They will love you for having a fluid trainer!

Cycle-Ops apparently makes great ones, and Blackburn also is well-regarded. But check out Kurt first!

SHAUN, I have a CycleOps fluid trainer.  Since it's the only one I've ever used ... can't really compare it to anything else.

DENISE, sounds like you'll be a little busy the next few weekends.  I'm the one that feels like the slacker!  Any luck finding a place for your mom?

I've run before work three mornings this week, and wonder why it took me so long to realize how much better (not to mention 10 degrees cooler) than it is in the evening.  And I made it to the pool once this week.  Maybe I'd be more motivated if I didn't feel so lonely down here all by myself!  Undecided

MANDY -

No, no, no! But it does have some peaked things off in the distance that you can swim towards -- just to get you started!

More on the cable later, but what is REALLY nifty is when you get close to the first turn buoy and you look down and see a scuba diver staring up at you! There are about three of them out there, glubglubglubbing and bubbubbubbling down about ten feet. Ahoy!

I keep telling Mindy from the other group, who lives and swelters in Atlanta, that in my role as a Full Service Mentor I will readily give 4am wake-up calls so she can do her runs well before it gets too hot and humid......but she never takes me up on that offer! Huh.

Anyhow, I'm glad that's working for you, although I can't help but wonder why - as a lifelong Texan - you are only just figuring that out. Oh, I guess it maybe has something to do with work and family and needing something resembling decent sleep, eh?

You really should consult the GrooveTime Travel Agency, which will happily plan and help you execute a tour of some of the cooler triathlon "hotspots" north of the Mason-Dixon line. Great training opportunities abound in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, California, and, of course, two convenient locations (that would be Anne and me) in Ontario. Just say the word, and your friendly and accommodating GrooveTime representative will set it all up for you -- and you'll be lonely no more!

ADVICE NEEDED!

All olfactory indicators tell us that something has died in the wall between our bedroom and the room next to it. So.......short of banging out walls, what's the best approach to take? Wait for full decomposition to happen? Use a few Odor-Eaters?

We had a baby squirrel die and smell kind of bad for quite a while 2 or 3 years ago, but my sense with this current one is that it might be something bigger. Although, we have no idea what, or where exactly it could be, or how it enetered the house. We haven't heard anything rustling in the space between the walss, so maybe it was in the attic (mostly a crawl space in which, in 19 years here, we have never crawled) and then......??

Any thoughts, clever folks?

SteveB,

So I had to google "defenestration" yesterday - then spent about an hour reading all the stuff on it - to think, I might have lived the rest of my life without this knowledge.

DENISE -

I first heard it in the context of what a number of Wall Street bankers did at the start of the Great Depression. I was always amused by it, even though I knew it was no laughing matter, and the laughs got far, far, far less on 9/11. Ultimately, though, I have never shied away from "gallows humor", and seeing as how it is a nifty word.....well, there you have it.

Fenetre is French for window, so the root holds true, or at least somewhat so.

Any thoughts on decaying animals in the walls?

STEVE B, in all fairness, this is only my third summer of running (second "serious" summer), so it didn't take me THAT long to figure out it' better to run in the morning.  I've always gotten up around 5 am on Saturday morning for my runs, but it just didnt' really dawn on me to do it during the week!  We'll have to wait and see what happens once we have the time change in the fall and it starts getting cooler.  Can't say as it is a "habit" yet since I'm only going on two weeks now.  And I'm sorry, I can't help with the dead animal ... I think you will just have to wait it out.  Smile

DENISE, good luck with your race this weekend.  Sounds like fun!

And where, or where, is KASIA??

"Fairness" duly noted! You're a quicker study than I am in a lot of ways.....and I'm not going to rewgale you with the details of how often I have proven to be a slow learner !

As for "in the fall and it starts getting cooler" ---- yeah, i remember that as a prolonged period of sweet, sweet temperatures. Fall in Texas was awfully nice, transitioning into a relatively balmy winter -- all a climatic lifestyle to which I could become accustomed! (But then we left.....)

Wait out the dead animal, eh? Oh, yechh! (But I'm sure you're 100% correct unless we want to rip apart walls.....)

As for Kasia, i don't know. I PMed her about a week ago to see if all was okay, but I haven't heard back. Is no news good news, in this case? I'd like to think so! I, too, miss her, and hope she returns soon.

I feel like compiling a list of "ex officio" GrooveTimers, just to see who we have lost or misplaced. I went with ~20 initially, figuring from past experience that we would lose a swack along the way.....and sure enough, that's what happened. I feel particularly badly - still! - about Diane, and it's been about 4-5 months now, I think. I keep hoping her sciatica will improve and she'll return, but I guess that's kind of a longshot, huh?

Well, concerning Kasia, let's both generate some meaningful cosmic vibes and see if we can get her to report asap. Okay??

Here goes!!!!!!

Do you get to run with handcuffs so you can cuff them and stuff them? What do you do if you catch them?

Wow! - I really had fun today!

My times weren't great (2:31/16.6/10:06) but my placements were fantastic (age group 1/2, females 39/91, and overall 125/218)

Walker is a vacation/resort town and I think a lot of people who were going to be there on vacation said "Hey, lets do a tri while we're there" so there weren't a lot of hard-core racers.  But I absolutely loved making the top half of the female divison.

Sweet jumpin' Judas, Denise --- what fabulous placements!!! I really hope that at the awards they made special mention of how you did; did they? And top half of the women --- with lots of room to spare!

As for the times.....what you have there are the various paces, yes? The bike looks very good, the swim very good, the run better than you were doing not so long ago, I do believe.

What is the race for you next weekend? Whatever it is, I'm sure you're going to be VERY psyched -- and deservedly so!

DENISE, great job on your race!!  I told my husband I was jealous because you were doing a tri in Walker in Leech Lake and saying how wonderful it would be swimming up there right now (while we were floating in our 95 degree pool!).  He told me to find a race and head up that way.  Might just take him up on that next year ... not really wanting to take the vacation time off to drive that distance at this point.  He'll probably be headed up that way in September or October with my mother to take my stepfather's ashes up there.  I'll get to stay here with my 12 year old.  Frown

STEVE B, how is the "wallkill"?

By the way, glad I got my run in the morning ... it is 106 degrees right now and that is not a "feels like" temperature.

LISA -

"Wallkill" seems to be not quite the gagawful issue it was a few days ago; in fact, we're not smelling it these days! It is quite strnge, going from vile to zero in about 72 hours. I'm at a loss to explain it, but sure won't argue if this is permanent!

Our latest problem is low pressure in the upstairs shower, and I guess it's time to phone a plumber. I'm definitely getting the impression these days that we should've moved about 4-6 searches ago!

Well done on yet another wee-hours run! The quiet joys of being awake AND functional well before the heat develops!

Belatedly, very sorry about the Astros. It's been that way since about day three of the season, with the only solace being that they are ahead of the Pirates. (But then, so is "wallkill" here, almost!)

I am very pleased about my Rangers, however, and I just think they're too stacked and too far ahead to experience yet another of their patented mid- to late-season collapses. Cool beans!

Finally, what's up next for you? Last you ventured this topic, you weren't planning anything until late August or into September. Is that still the plan?

FUELING FOR SHORT(ER) RACES AND TRAINING SESSIONS

This topic has come up a few times, most recently with TRACEY and DENISE. But as almost all of us do shorter races, it is useful to har it from one of the horses' mouths -- in this case PowerBar. The following is taken from a booklet, "Sports Nutrition for Triathlon", published by PowerBar.

"For training sessions and short-distance triathlons lasting less than an hour and are in moderate temperatures, plain water is usually adequate for hydration. But for workouts and races that last an hour or longer, or anytime you're exercising in hot or humid conditions, a sports drink that provides carbohydrates, fluids, and sodium is the preferred hydration option.

".....fueling during exercise can delay the onset of fatigue and extend your endurance. Aim to consume 30-60 grams of carbs per hour for sessions lasting 1-2 hours, and 45-90 grams of carbs per hour for sessions lasting longer than 2 hours."

There is more, but I will leave it at that (I'm squinting too much as it is!). But that really is close to my own protocol, especially for races. I can get lazy about fueling when training, but for races I will always have a gel before the swim, and....
--if I think I will finish in <1:20, I will have a water bottle with only about 12oz of drink in it and make it through at least some of that
--if my EFT is 1:20-1:45, I will just add a bit more energy drink
--if my EFT is 1:45-2:10 or so, I will have 20oz of energy drink and a bottle with about 10 oz of water, which I will use to chase a gel in the final few miles of the bike
--for olys, which are 2:25-2:35 for me, there will be the some as just above, except I will have the gel a bit earlier, and then also will gel again at about mile 1 or 2 of the run

A little bit helpful?

Lisa - not to rub it in - but Leech Lake was great for the swim.  The temp was just right for wearing a wetsuit or not wearing a wetsuit.  I thought it might be choppy because Leech is so big but it was like glass (except for the churning bodies, of course)
