stevebradley - 2010-03-15 11:20 AM LISA - First, you stay away from Neil's house -- I have first dibs on it! (You housey-hussy, you!) Second, that is huge that you are feeling accustomed to that volume already. I mean, really huge. It is good to see the words "rest week" in there, just so I know thta he has that in mind and won't have you toasted by mid-May. Speaking of toast....how was the roast? And 11 miles in the rain - tough chick! Is Ryan on the same plan as you are, or are the two of you whirling in different orbits? Hips okay? And I still owe you a longer one, coming soon, I promise!

the plan is the same for ryan and i so far with one exception.  i have 5 runs/3 bikes/3 swim  ryan has 4 runs/4 bikes/ 3 swims.  he got a day of biking swapped for running because he twisted his ankle a few weeks ago.  ....the day that is different happens to be monday (today for those retired folks )  i was really cranky about it to because i had to go run outside for the THIRD day in a row in the rain and he just sat on his bike spinning in an easy zone 1 ride.  when i got home he was on his bike talking to his mom on the phone.  humph.

actually, the thought of running in the rain sucks, but once you get going it is completely fine.  for the past three days it's been 50 and raining.  50 and rain is okay.

the pork roast was delicious.  thank you for asking.  plenty, too, for leftovers here in a bit.

our coach has us on a three weeks on, 1 week rest pattern so far.  ...and while we are doing a decent amount of volume, there is only one intense ride and 1 intense run a week.  the rest are zone 3 or below efforts.  for now.  the phases are each a month long.  march is the third base phase.  april starts build.  i'm scared.

the hips are mostly fine.  i get aches here and there which don't appear to be getting worse.  it might just be the way it is since i have had cartilege removed.  don't know.  but there hasn't been any pain that has impeded a workout or even caused me to take ibuprofen for that matter.  i'm hopeful it stays that way.

how is your training coming along?

I'm pretty sure I met both Jane and her husband at Kiawah.  By then my brain was frozen so can't be sure.

I think I am not as prepared as I would like to be for this race but not much I can do about tht now.  I have been struggling with a torn blister turned into a sore on the bottom of my second toe.  It actually hurts worse when just walking (vs running) but I am worried what 13 miles of running will do.  Also forecast looks like rain right now which I am not thrilled about.  I am hoping not to walk at all, but if that happens the world will not end.  My friend Leanna and her husband are both running as well so I will have some company this time.  It will be interesting to see how Ivan does with the newtons, which I assume he will wear for the race although I am not positive.  My Janie turns 10 Sunday as well.  Big weekend plans with slumber party, birthday dinners, etc.

MINDY -

Spenco makes a great blister kit, complete with wonderful gel pads and adhesive to go over them. The gel pads can be cut to just about any size, although affixing them to the bottom of a toe might be tricky. I think it could be done, however, and it would be better than nothing -- at least it would put part of the blister-worry to rest.

I had just completing a rounding off of race info for both you and you and was all set to post it when I saw your note. One thing I could not get was weather (www.weather.ca wasn't coming up for me), although I see from your post that rain (surprise, surprise!) is a possibility. Drippity-drip-drip!

And Janie's having her day! Let me guess -- you might be taking Monday off as a mental- AND physical-health day!

The mojo is building, to be sure, but it needs to go five ways -- you, Neil, Ivan, and the two other Janes. (Sorry, no mojo for your Jane, although my best well wishes!)

Stay cool and calm about Sunday. In any event, it sounds like a nifty course, and you're doing it in good company!

Very concerned right now about being able to run this race.  Yesterday I woke up very sore.  My herniated disc is acting up and I going on about the 36hr mark for having some serious immobility.  Causes pain to turn my neck unless I move my shoulders at the same time.  Having numbness down right arm about half way done the upper arm.  Very annoying, all this training and now I might not make the start line.

Since I spend my days at the hospital I had a customer call in a favor and I had a free consult with a nuero-radiologist.  He got me sound up with the one of the top guys in the field and I will try to set up an appointemnt with office soon to get an MRI.  Hoping for the best.  Right now on anti inflamotories and Vicadin for the pain.  This sucks.

In this past it has miraculously went away after a few days...hoping thats what will happen here.  Other thoughts are to numb up with the narcotics and still do the race but I don't see the point.

We'll see.

Neil,
So sorry to hear about your back! Don't run under these circumstances! Your body is telling you something and you need to listen. I know it sucks, but there will always be races. Get the MRI and find out what the heck is going on. Consult with the doc and with physical therapy and get your back better!

My 5 cents!

NEIL -

Really, really sorry to hear about the mess you're in. I would've felt that way at any point, but with my Kiawah marahon disappointment still faitrly fresh, I feel even more empathy for your plight. It's very tough to swallow, all that training and no planeed-for carrot as a reward. There are times that the thought of "training for its own benefits" works........but not when it is geared towards longer races. However and nevertheless, your training for LAM is part of building a pretty sound base, so if it comes to it, keep your eye on the prize that is IMAZ, Round Two!

As for running it will doped-up.........I say uh-uh. The big risk for that is that you might mask some other pain, and that could end up in a more serious and long-lasting injury elsewhere. For shorter stuff it might a risk worth taking, but too many things can wrong over 26.2 miles to take that chance, IMHO.

Hopefully, your back will come around quickly, what with the meds and the intervening time. The good news is that if it DOES come around, you will go into Sunday feeling pretty well rested -- at least physically!

Keep us plied with updates!

I thought this was baby number one.  If it's number three, then you fully know what you're getting yourself into...

After a few days of meds I am feeling a bit better.  I went for a 2 mile easy run today at packet pickup and plan to run the race tomorrow.

They prescribed me Medrol which is a steroid for inflammation.  I took one series of it (6 pills) but decided to go off of it.  I was ravaness and wanting to eat everything, and I was up 5 times in the night to urinate. Playing with my body like that going into an endurance race is not a good idea.  So big surprise...but I am taking arnica instead.  When I was at the store I saw there was actually an IRONMAN brand topical arnica spray so I picked it up (man they will brand anything)

Anyway, arnica is my friend and it works...so lets try it out.  About 90% more mobility now in the neck...lucking running is just looking straight.

Good luck tomorrow Neil!  Back you are feeling up to your race tomorrow.  My lower back has been sore today, but hoping a little ibuprofen will do the trick.  Heading to Leanna's tonight for a spaghetti dinner.  Rain tomorrow is supposed to hold off until 9:00ish, so hopefully I can be done or mostly done before it starts.

Steve, Ivan says he is not running with the newtons, but did say they helped in changing his stride.  He thinks the width of the newton shoe is not big enough for his feet and he gets blisters along the outside of his foot when he does longer runs (from his foot "spilling" over the edge of the shoe.)

NEIL -

That's good news indeed! Also, i think you were very smart to get off the Medrol as soon as you did. I guess it worked for you.....but also hinted at some less-than-desirable side effects.

Yup, no surprise that you're back in the camp of Arnica montana. I am very intrigued that Ironman sponsors it, though! There ARE lots of weird things they sponsor, but for them to enter into the general field of naturopathic medicines.....is this a first!

I hope the athlete tracking for you works well, as I'm looking forward to it. And I'm definitely looking forward to your post-race report.

Have a great day out there!

Is the back any better now, a few hours after your post? Maybe Leanna's sauce has some special type of oregano or thyme that imparted antioxidants and anti-inflams! Otherwise, you're goofd to go, yes?

As for Ivan and his shoe choice --- well, I won't tell Newton if he doesn't tell Newton!

Truth told, it wasn't until I was up to the higher mileage for the Musselman '08 training that I realized I could run upwards of 90 minutes without my calves wanting to implode. Until that point I really questioned whether or not they would work for me for 13.1 miles, or if Imwould have to go back to my Asics DS Trainers for the run there. And similarly, it wasn't until I made it through the first of my 20+ mile runs for Kiawah that I was confident that the Newtons would work at the full 12.2 miles. Fickle --- moi?

Have fine, fine races, both of you! (And also best thoughts for Leanna and spouse.) And a happy b-day to Janie, hittin' the big old double-digits!

Mojo to you!!!

We're back and recovering.  It was a great fun race - so many people, over 18,000 someone told me.  My time was not stellar - 2:23 - but given that the course was pretty hilly I am not unhappy.  I ran the entire course.  It was a great course, going through a lot of fun old Atlanta neighborhoods.  It started sprinkling a little around 7:30, but really was not bad and cooled off the runners.  The only downside was being wet when it was over and therefore getting cold pretty fast.  All in all I am very happy and will hopefully do that one again.

Ivan's time was something like 1:53.  Not bad considering how little he trained foir this and the problems he had with the archilles a couple of months ago.  I don't know how Leanna did, but she was a few minutes behind me running with an out of town (and much slower) friend.  Her husband ran 2:03 which was a huge PR for him.

I really just want to nap, but given that it is Janie's b-day today, we are running around as usual!

Back from the race feeling ok..  Calf's are a bit sore but not too bad overall.  Going to take a short nap then prepare for my flight tonight.  I am headed to Vegas for work for 3 days.  Luckily this time I don't have to think about workouts while I am there.  In fact, I won't even pack workout gear...just a swimsuit for the pool.

While I am there I will start thinking about my next training plan/race ideas.

MINDY!

Wonderful accounting of what sounds likea n overall terrific experience. "Great" comes up twice - as pertaining to a fun race, and the nature of the course. As I looked through the race info a few months ago, I was struck by how nifty the tour de neighborhoods was likely to be; I'm glad you weren't disappointed!

While you may not be sounding too thrilled by your time (which, by the way, is relly very good), I know you have to be thrilled by running the whole thing (didn't you do this at Kiawah, too?). That says a lot about your overall fitness and strength, and I think it should serve to "give you permssion" to add some subtle speed elements to training for te next one. It's just really very obvious to me that you can do the distance with impunity (if not, you'd be walking some!), so now it's time to play some with diversifying your training (or not -- its all up to you, of course).

Give my congratulations to Ivan, too! Considering the various blips and setbacks along the way to today, 1:53 is a very fine time. Is he off the Newtons for good, now that his running form has been adjusted to his liking.....or is it really still just a work-in-progress!

finally, what was harder -- the race, or tending to Janie and her friends? (I think I know the answer to that one -- the easier part was completed earlier in the day!) How many kiddos did you entertain, anyhow? Thinking about what I just said, though, maybe the race was the hrad part -- afterall, there probably isn't anything more delightful than a room full of birthday-celebrating 10-year-old girls.

Still feeling okay now, about 12 hours post-finish?

Great work, MMcC!

NEIL!

Studied the splits, and then resad your report, and I'm glad that you are pleased with the race! I knew you were aiming for sub-4, so when I saw the 4:18 I thought you'd maybe be disappointed........but I hadn't remembered your previous best. Setting a whopping ELEVEN-MINUTE p.r, is enormous; you must realize that, yes?

As with Mindy, it is great that you enjoyed the actual event so much and figure to do it again. As for another marathon again in the near-distant future.....why not? As it stands now, have you committed to anything between now and IMAZ? If you take the next week easy, and then begin a build to another by maybe going back to about 15 miles as a launching pad, you sjhould be able to peak for another in about 4-6 weeks. You think?

The splits are very telling, and that's good information to have. Knowing you as I think I do, you are already deep into planning how to make the next marathon miles between 18 and 24 more like the ones that went before. You finished quite strong, however, with those final miles at 9:49, 10:17, and a projected 10:08. Those are pretty sweet! Do you have any thoughts that MAYBE you could've done the 10:38 one a bit faster, too?

Enjoy Vegas and what I hope isn't a stressful trip. Lull around in the pool, just doing the lay-z-boy thing. Be loving to your calves!

HI all,
I've missed so much! For some reason I'm not getting my notifications in my email so here I thought that nobody was posting!!

Mindy,
I am marveling at how far you've come. Look at you running with the big boys!!

Neil,
I'm glad you got to run. It would have been horrible sitting this one out! What is Anorol (sp)?

I've actually started using my Your Shape toy on Wii for exercise. It is funny because Jenny (McCarthy) on the video keeps telling me that I should check out the tutorial to see how to do the moves correctly. It's not that I don't know how, it's that I can't move correctly yet. I'm so weak everywhere, and when I try to do the hops with the jumping jacks and stepping, I'm just not strong enough and my back and hips really start to hurt. So I'm taking it slow with strengthening exercises and walking. Hopefully I'll gain enough strength back to be able to start jogging. I know I'll be able to bike when the trails lose their mud and snow, but I'm thinking of switching back to normal pedals so I don't fall as much.

I'll keep you all posted!
