I have added another event to my calendar. It's not a race, but a bike ride for MS. I can pick from 30, 62.5, or 100 miles. I'm leaning towards the 62.5 or 100. It's not until the middle of July, so I'm hoping to be ready to ride the 100 miles. I've always wanted to do a century, and if I can do one that's supported why not?

Go for the century!  They are fun, in a twisted sort of way.  I've never actually done a supported century (other than IM) but did a few while training.  Unsupported, while still a good time, is not as much fun as I would imagine a supported ride with a bunch of other people.

I am really leaning toward the century. Right now it depends on my son. If he wants to ride I'll only do the 30 miler. If he doesn't ride I am going to try for the century. My son likes to go biking with me, he has a road bike, so I want to encourage him if he wants to do it. He will only be 11 so I'll have to stay with him.

Morning all. Have been getting in all the workouts I could. While swimming(or at least that thrashing around in the pool I call swimming) continues to be my nemesis, my runs have really improved. The last 3 or 4 runs have just seemed to click and seemed effortless. I'm to the point where I look forward to running. My times are getting better, I feel relaxed and loose.....it's a great thing. The snow is mostly gone so I may get the bike off the trainer soon and head outdoors. Its still cold, but I'm tired of staring at the wall of the family room for an hour every other day. Probably going to bail on the 5k I'd planned for this weekend. It's a trail run and the weather calls for heavy rain.....Don't feel like paying to run in the mud......but I do have a road run 5k scheduled for next weekend, the 12th.

Hi everyone.  Hope you are all doing good.  Finally signed up for my first sprint tri.  Weird setup for this one because it's a 2 day event.  Never heard of something like this before.  The swim is one evening and the bike/run is the next morning.  Interesting considering this is a "triathlon" because you get to rest after the swim.  Also missing the swim/bike transition.  I'm sure it will still be fun.  Probably a good introduction to a multisport event considering this will be my very first one.

Hi all! I'm back from my vacation and back in the swing. I did run once while I was gone but i found it very strange running on a treadmill on a cruise ship that was moving in the waves. Yesterday, I got a 3.3 miler in and am hoping for a longer run today outside. Thats assuming we hit the 50* mark the weather man says we will hit How is everyone doing???

If you'd have run around the deck, wouldn't you cover more distance when you were running the opposite direction than the ship was traveling?

Did a little mini tri at the gym yesterday....started with my usual swim, then went to the bike per my training program......after I finished my allotted time on the bike I hit the track to walk a lap or two to stretch out.....felt good so did a 20 minute run. Was well over and above the program, but I felt good the whole time. Unfortunately, work prevents any workout today so I will have to wait until my usual swim tomorrow.

40 minute treadmill run before going to work this am. 12 hour work day, so no more exercise today.

Yesterday was better. Swam and biked.

Had a strong swim in the am. I tried the 2:1:2 breathing scheme, instead of regular 1:1:1 bilateral breathing. It was ever-so-slightly slower, but I had plenty of air and feel like I could swim all day long like that.

With the regular bilateral breathing 1:1:1 routine, I gradually run out of air. I can swim about 200-250 yards like that, but then have to stop. For 500 yards, my fastest routine seems to be breaking into breast stroke for 2 or 3 strokes every 50 yards, and do 1:1:1 the rest of the time. I may do this in my tris anyway, because it gives me a chance to sight and make sure I'm not wandering off the wrong direction.

Also had my first real outdoor bike ride of the season, and on my new road bike. Got a Cannondale Synapse Alloy 6/Tiagra, which was about at the limit of my toy budget. The ride left me feeling pretty sure this bike was a good choice for me. Bonus, got to ride with my Dad. He lives on a farm, so there's a lot of not-too-busy blacktop in his neighborhood, plus it's pleasant scenery to ride through. He likes to walk for about a quarter of a mile before and after every ride, which I think is a good idea - seemed to get rid of the saddle seat very quickly and helped limber up before the ride and relax the upper body afterwards. In all we went about 90 minutes and had a great time.

I was in the U.S. Navy in the early through mid 90's and was on a couple of different aircraft carriers.  They let us run on the flight deck when there were no flight ops.  During high seas, you went from running downhill to running uphill a few seconds at a time over and over agian.  Also, when going into the wind, it defintely helped you going one way, but it was a struggle going the other.  So, in my opinion, if you gain distance running opposite of which the ship is going, it evens out when you run in the direction the ship is going.  No matter what it was, it was definitely an experience and some great excerciseSmile.
