While it may not be a big deal for all you tri-studs, today I went on a club ride with snow flurries forecast)(there were just two of us), but I plodded out just over 40 miles.  A new long ride for me, and I've still got legs for the ride to work tonight.

I hope you are all well and training.

Good job!

titeloops - 2010-03-08 9:27 AM In a race this short, i would just wear my tri shorts for the swim, and then just hop on the bike. No time for a change in transition. Think I'm gonna freeze my azz off on the bike?

Does it matter in HTFU-Land?

Guess I should just HTFU.
BTW, sometimes my wife tells me to STFU! Especially when I start talking about my heart rate zones.

My wife doesn't actually say that but when her eyes roll back in her head and she starts snoring the message is conveyed quite clearly.

Just found that one of the colleges near my home has a, "Human Performance Lab". They offer the full array of testing. I'm excited, but not sure what I should spend the dough on. Bama, you had some of this testing done right? You guys take a look and give me your feedback on how I should prioritize.

Really wanting to do a full ironman by the end of the year.  I had thought I would do the one by house in Clermont The Great Floridian.  I run and train on part of the course all year long and don't really want to do that.  I saw the Beach to Battleship is in Novemer in Wilmington and thought this would be a great first Ironman.  I know the weather would be great and the course is flat.  I think somone in our group here has done it.  Do any of you have any thoughts on it.

Thanks

I'm registered for B2B. I've never heard a single bad comment about the race. Swim is with the incoming tide, so is usually fast.

Registered for the Full, but may switch to the half if my swim doesn't improve. I've never completed over sprint distance, so I would like to get a half in before full.  We'll see how it goes.

I lived in Wilmington for about 5 years while at school. UNCW. The course will be really flat. Did you check out the website?

Saw the website.  Love the picture of that battleship and swim.  Sends chills.  I am really close to signing up.  I visited Wilmington when my daughter was looking at schools about 4 years ago.  I am going to make a decision today and will post.  My only hesitation is wondering if I have the time to train for a ironman distance.  I think I would need about 17 plus hours per week. I am going to look at the plans here and see what kind of time I would be looking at.  I think a big portion of the additional hours required to train would come on weekends with runs and bike mileage.  I have the ability to do 2 hours per day M-F with one day of rest.  This puts it at 8 hours training Monday - Friday and 8-12 hours total Saturday and Sunday.  For those that have trained for Iron distance is this realistic or agressive?  I really want to do an ironman this year due to the 50 year old I turn in about 3 weeks.

Awesome guys - I look forward to hearing your exploits!

On my end I have been fighting a respiratory illness all week.  Not only that but I pulled something in my shoulder and had to kill swim practice last night.  Nixing today's swim, as well.  Shoulder feels better this morning - head/chest does not.  Freaking annoying.

If I can breathe at all I am out of the house for a 10 mile run and a 1 hr bike today.

Just finished my first race of the seson. It was a super sprint. My first race that wasn't a relay. So needles to say, I was a little nervous. I'll post a race report when I get all my split times, but I finished 20th overall out of 180. Missed placing 3rd in my AG by 12 seconds. I'm a little disappointed. Had I known I was in the running I certainly could have dug a little deeper. I didn't really leave it all on the course. My chain popped off at the bike turn around which cost me some time as well. The swim was a pool swim and I gave an accurate 100m time for placement. Was a big mistke. I had to pass a lot of people in the swim. Very frustrating. The chick who started behind me didn't actually swim, she jogged the swim. Anyway, I'm happy with 20th, but could have done a lot better. Definitely could have placed in my AG. Next race I try and make myself puke. I was way to comfortable.

Correction, I finished 18th overall, but was 4th in my AG. Tried to do a race report but couldn't figure it out. Transitions killed me. T1 was 1:59 and T2 was 1:34. I didn't realize they were that slow. Felt like they went pretty well. Need practice. I could have finished top 10 if I had saved 2 minutes in transition. Here are my times:

Swim 250 yard: 4:50
Bike 7 Miles: 21:59
Run 2 miles: 17:09

Nice job.  These races really get you going.  I did a sprint last weekend and there is one this weekend and I almost signed up but decided I better stick with some long distances on bike and run this weekend.  You did a great job and must feel really good about this.  Keep it up.  See you in November!

Good start to the season!

---

On my end I am finally getting over the illness that has dogged me all week (sinus/chest thing that made breathing difficult).  And I am struggling with some shoulder issues from swimming.  I'm going to try a light swim tomorrow and see how that goes.

Did a good 6.5 mile run today at 8:10/mile.  Felt pretty good, so I think the illness is finally going away.  Did my taxes yesterday while sick, so now I'm picking out some celebratory items (Vittoria race tires, new road cycling shoes, etc.).

Oh, and three cheers for Daylight Savings Time!

Mostly the right.  Happened immediately after trying to "adjust" my stroke.  There were some good comments in that thread, but the concentration on the right arm was a bit off - changing that really won't make me much faster.  Janet Evans had the same whipover and she was pretty fast. ;-)  I typically don't whip over in such a pronounced way - no telling what I was doing that day.  The comments about body position and pulling/catching are what I need to work on.

Just goes to show, though, that you can get to be pretty decent while still having a bunch of flaws in the system.  I don't think anyone caught that that was a 1:19 100yd set (from a push, open turns, crappy board shorts). LOL

I'm no expert for sure. And the swim is my nemesis, but i did notice the whip over and it reminded me of one of my first swim lessons when i had the same thing going on. My swim coach pointed out that it could cause shoulder strain and injury long term. However, at 1:19 per 100, I say if it ain't broke don't fix it. At that kind of speed you are obviously catching and pulling really well.

On a different note, I woke up this morning really sick. I think it's from hoping out of the pool on saturday then riding 20 mph in 45 degree weather. Gonna skip my workouts today. Also just found out my 3 yr old has strep throat. Man that thing is gonna run through my house like a tornado. Just waiting on the other 2 kids to spike a fever.

I'm definitely an "ain't broke..." person.  But I've notice a lot of extra strain on my left shoulder so it fell into the category of "it ain't broke yet but it's gonna be soon."

Had my run test today for Lactate Threshold and VO2 max. Was really interesting. Got some great info on how I need to be training.  Gonna schedule bike testing and underwater swim video ASAP. Here are the highlights:

Body Fat 16%
VO2 max 63.1
HR Max 184
HR at Lactate  Threshold 160
% of VO2 max at LT  80%

Also found that I do not burn fat well. Even at base zones I am burning mostly carbs. HR above 150 and I'm, burning almost completely carbs.

Cool. That's a pretty high VO2 max, isn't it? How was the test? Do you think it was worth doing or is it to early to tell? I've been thinking about getting tested for a little while. I'm going back and forth between using race results to estimate my vdot or getting test.
