I wish there was a way to definitively quantify the time savings (or lack thereof) of these suits. I have a very hard time believing DeSoto's claim of 4 seconds per 100. And why would you wear that for the whole race when it doesn't have any pockets? On top of that, who the heck wants to wear a jet black suit for IMTX?

Desoto says NOT to wear it for the entire race. I kind of sounds like they say you could wear it for a sprint. Depends on the sprint and how fast you are. If you're a top contender in a sprint and it takes you 8-12 seconds to get it off then that could really hurt you, if you're not then who cares, wear it and take it off. What most people need are swim lessons, not all these different suits. Does 30-90 seconds really matter if people are hanging on kayaks and in zone 4 for the entire swim and swallow a gallon of water? Most need to have better form and swim more, bottom line. After that I would say look into the suits. Just my thoughts as a coach.

Let's say you swim 2.4 mi (4224 yds) at a 2:00/100yd pace = 1h 24m 28s Total swim split.

If you take 4 secs off per 100 for a 1:56/100 pace = 1h 21m 39s  Total swim split.

So this would save you less the 3 mins total?  And I agree with Dennis that I find it hard to believe it really does save you 4 sec per 100 but even if it does is that little of a time savings even worth it?

But the next question is how much would it save you in terms of overall exertion? If it does indeed help your buoyancy thus requiring less effort to swim then maybe it is worth the cost? Guess we will have to wait for someone to do a product review!  Personally I am skeptical and will just continue to push out 10K yards a week in the pool!

Well, I'm certainly not doing 10k a week in the pool, but why not go for both?

Save the money on a speed suit. Get a good bike fit for about the same price and you can make 3 minutes up on 112 mile bike.
Do the meters in the pool and ow swims workouts for confidence in the swim.

Just my 2 cents

And yes I do not own a bike shop

I'm 100% with Aaron on this one.  I'm as guilty as anyone of using the wetsuit as a crutch for long distance swims.  I have the Syracuse 70.3 and IMFL in the coming weeks and I'm not sweating the swim at all because I just have to paddle my butt around the lake or Gulf.  I'm still swim training but nothing on the level that I will do come first of the year when I know I have to prepare for a 2.4 swim WITHOUT a wetsuit.  I am a self-taught swimmer with many technique flaws I'm sure.  That said, I'm not a bad swimmer and I do have top 10 age group swims.  I actually plan on taking some master classes this winter to improve so it's once less thing I need to concern myself with.  I want my only concern on May 21st to be the weather.

I agree with Aaron as well. If you don't have the engine to make the swim on your own, then no form of skinsuit will help you. It's simply marketing by the different companies to increase sales. There will always be people that want the latest and greatest just because they can. It's like race wheels. People swear that they need them to get faster. When all they really need is more time on the bike with quality workouts and higher intensity. Proper swimming technique will do wonders. I'm not the best swimmer, but i've made improvements this year by reading and talking to other swimmers who are good. Knowledge is key and execution will take you a long way.

One possible factor for a complicated race: RAIN. I was looking at the average temps for the area and it was in there, May is THE RAINIEST month for the whole year. I've done one half in a deluge one time, and it was no walk in the park, the bike was extremely heavy from the increased RR but the run was cool at least. Smile

Hmmm, I'll take the rain if it can take the temperature down a few degrees and get us out of the sun!

I think you're on to something, but instead of switching to Gatorade, how about Shiner?

You could actually make back your entry fee by charging per slice for pizza. You could also run a long hose off of one of the taps to refill Aero-Bottles, similar to how the military refuels planes in flight. Charge by the refill. Of course keep one keg dedicated to yourself.

I was on BeginnerTriathlete for a short while in 2008; then got away from it.  Just got back on it today... and found this forum.

I'm registered for 2011 Ironman Texas... and eager to read everything and see every photo possible about the race environment.  Also plan to take several dry runs of the location prior to the race.

I'll start posting my Beginner Triathlete training log beginning Monday.  This will be my first Ironman!
