When we did pull sets with the bouy I could not keep up with him. I always thought if we could take my kick and his pull we'd have a great stroke .

Now I don't do kick sets much anymore but mostly because it bothers my back. And they are really boring.......

HAhaha... Yeah, I love the buoy. Kick sets are BORING. I think I am going to keep them in my workouts for a few months. I've noticed that I have built my swim distance up to 2,000 -2,500 yards; most of my workouts are now in this range regularly. I would like to spend the next few months getting faster and more efficient at this distance before slowing it down to work on building the distance to 3,000 - 3,500 yards.

I'll be at Eastman this weekend Jonathan. I'm only biking as my two oldest sons are doing the other two legs as part of a relay team. We'll see you there, and you'll see all 6 of us as well! (I know that's in poor taste and I'm sorry, I'm the most un-PC person you'll meet and I saw the opening)

Warren - This is awesome! I expect to see pictures! A family affair out there, wish I was there to cheer you guys on!

Off to the pool, but I won't be getting many laps in. Taking my daughter to swim (read float). Hopefully I can get a run in tonight.

I know I need to work on getting my kick smaller, I've noticed some of the awesome swimmers in the pool have a small kick.

For the time being, I am going to try and tie in a little kick work in, since my races are still sprint, and my first Oly will be in August. My first HIM will be in April.

This sounds great, the kick should become second nature and should be in sync with the entire stroke. One thing my "coach" gives me for visualization on the kick is to imagine you're swimming in a tube, and your feet should not be crashing against the sides of the tube. Small, relaxed, rhythmic kicking. And from the hips, as Dirk said, not the knees. I've seen some people actually put an elastic around their knees to keep the legs from separating too much, ala the scissor kick. And keep your toes pointed, not at a 90 degree angle.

Jeez, the more I write about it, I guess the kick matters more than I thought! It's just not a major propulsion thing.

Originally posted by pistuo Hey guys, I'll be out all next week. Hope to at least get some runs in, but no promises... lol. I've pretty much hit a wall of exhaustion this week (physically and mentally). My right quad has also been strained for the past couple weeks and I guess I just haven't given it any time to heal, so I took a couple days off. Got a decent ride in today (47 miles) and could still feel it, but it's definitely getting better. I haven't actually signed up for my target race (full iron), but as far as getting off for it- I think it's going to happen. Now I just have to pick a training plan and pull the trigger (there are about 240 spots left). I was originally going to do the beginner training plan on BT (perceived effort)... but after looking at it more in detail, I dont know how much I like it. I'm thinking about signing up for a silver membership so I can see the Beginner plan that uses HR. Anyone here have any thoughts or know about the HR plan? Brenda (I think it was you that asked) - no, not going back to Africa yet. My trips in June and July are to Oklahoma and Wyoming. The WYO one is 10 days and though I love the trip, not being able to train is going to really tear me up on that one! Plus, I drive there and back and usually need a few days to recover once back (frowny face!).

I looked at the calendar view of each of these plans and they appear, on the surface, to be identical.  The differences being that you would choose to follow (and test) RPE or HR.  I personally would recommend the HR plan because I think it will be a little better focused.  However, RPE is really important, as Jeff outlined in a much earlier post.  HR is a great tool and can really help you figure out to a much closer level some really good training zones.  You can quickly see that you have been training to easily or to hard after completing the testing required to accurately determine HR zones.

Now, I don't think you need to purchase the plan at $35 a month to complete it unless you don't want to spend the time doing some of your own research.  There are plenty of avenues to complete the research required.  You can post question in the main forum, here in the group and always google.  I believe you can get a lot of info on the Ironman website as well.  To be honest, I simply apply the things fro Oly distance races and increase the volume/intensity by a percentage.  (I also have been done to over train fro various distances by increasing my volume to allow for better periodization.)

My personal recommendation is HR.  How you get the information is entirely up to you.

One thing about the beginner plans is that I think they are run light, while the bike seems to be much closer to what I would like to see.  I am sure they are trying to set the run up a little better by having a slightly higher cycling volume but really, the volume for the 2 aren't far apart.

My suggestion would be to hold the higher volume that you have been doing currently, at the start of the plan and allow the plan to catch up to you.  In so doing you'll get a much better benefit of the higher volume/endurance training than by allowing a bit of a setback to shorter training times.

Will I agree with Dirk. You might want to consider something like the IronFit plan maybe like the intermediate plan and talior that to your liking. I have been doing that with my training. I don't follow the plan to a tee. I use it as an outline so even if you choose a beginner plan you can add some volume to it like Dirk said. Whatever you do though make sure your number one priority is the bike. You can swim the distance but I think the bike is the whole key to these IM distance events. Also don't neglect the run, the bike is going to help your run but you still need to get the time on your feet.

Dina congrats on the newest member of your family and your ever growing pack!

I got back home early this morning what a long day yesterday was. I think I am just going to take it easy today I am tired and really didn't get to rest at all so I'll probably just swim this afternoon. My right knee has been acting up it's been tight on the outside and my right calf around the knee has been sore. The plane ride did not help that so I think I may skip any biking and running today. A swim today and a good night of sleep is order. I'll probably get a bike/run brick in tomorrow and then I'll have the weekend to do at least one long run, one long bike and an OWS.

I have 11-28 on both my bikes, AND a triple on my road bike!! I love it, and there are a few hills I use the entire thing. One of them I rode with Jonathan last summer. Let's put it this way - my Garmin is set to pause when I stop, and it paused while I was climbing that hill. Humbling to say the least.

Matt wins. I ran a 21:51, unofficially. I thought I ran as well as I could, paced pretty good, and that was about the fitness level I have.

I could offer up some excuses, like the Bruins keeping me up all night, the 10 winter pounds I've let stay on me this year, the rain and puddles, the color of my shirt, or whatever, but they'd all be lies. I just couldn't beat the young buck. Enjoy the trophy for the summer, because I'm taking it back September 8th on HIM day!

Warren that's a pretty darn good effort for a 5K excuses or not. I would take that any day of the week. Looking forward to the showdown between you and Matt.

Thanks Tony.

I threw together a quick race report here. My pacing was very steady, and for the first time in a running race I was passing people the last 1/2 mile. I don't have age group placings yet as the results aren't out. This was a HUGE race for a 5k, maybe 1400 people.

ah the taste of victory ! I will enjoy it while I can because I know in September it's going to be tough to hold onto. A short running race is one thing, but to add in a swim, bike and a looonnnnggg run to end it is a different story. Seriously though, great Race Warren! In my mind going under 22 is an outstanding race, and as you said in your report to do it with half the milage this year makes it even better. I think you can probably reduce the run milage even more and be just fine for the September race!

as for me I continue to work on my weakness, swimming! Kick or no kick I sink to the bottom but I am getting to th e point I don't sink as fast. Today's workout was rough,

WU: 300 MS: 8x50 Z3 on 20" rest. Then 2x (3x50 Z2, 3x200 Z4 on 30" rest) 100 ez, 4x50.

actual workout was supposed to have an additional 4 50's and a 300 on the end but I was dead. When I started the last set of 50's my arms felt as if they were going to fall apart, shoulders tightened up and did not want to cooperate! Since I have a race this weekend I decided I could cut short the workout and not lose much. Especially since I had already reached 2600yds.

Wait, we're supposed to kick when we swim?

Seriously, when I did my HIM (with full wetsuit), I dont think I kicked once... the legs just float behind you when you're wearing a wetsuit. I didnt realize how buoyant they are!

I do.  You know these flatland's can get really tough sometimes.

Seriously, it was/is my first bike and I didn't know what I was looking for nor what I needed.  Someone had told me before I bought it that I didn't need the extra chain ring around here but my ignorance to anything cycling told me I should get it just in case.  Including the bigger hill climbing ride I took last weekend this make the 2 time I have used the small ring EVER.  The first time was to see what spinning at 700 RPM's felt like.  As you may have guessed, I never use that ring in my normal terrain.

Now I'm off to work a long day. The massive storm that was forecasted for our area turned out to be little more than a average spring storm but we do have a little bit of damage.  I am headed for northwest Ohio to replace 7 broken poles and then back home tonight.  We only had 1 broken pole and a couple of trees for my normal area yesterday.  I guess the work my crew puts out on a normal basis keeps our stuff in much better shape and we have fewer problems normally than other areas.

I finally had a better swim yesterday, ever since my ows I have been feeling really off I got in 2000 yrds in 37.55 and had a few quick stops for water so am hoping this has calmed my nerves for Syracuse. And seeing as I am right behind the pros for my wave, not that I can keep up......but maybe there will be some delayed draft.....I know wishful thinking.
I also went and had a re-fit on my bike probably should of had it done sooner, but he said good news your getting fitter and moved my seat back and aeros forward and apart (I was rolling off the side on my right) anyway I can't wait to ride tomorrow I am hoping this may add some needed speed

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend and I hope everyone has a great weekend.

We got our BIB#'s and swim wave assignments for Syracuse for next weekend. I am in wave 9 and am happy to be starting in the middle in behind the pros. Not sure if I am happy being in front of all the fast younger folks though lol. I can't believe this thing is only 9 more days away I knew time was going to go by fast. It'll be the same for IMWI, here before I know it.

I asked this on the main forum, but figured I'd ask here too.

Would you carry anything for a bike TT lasting about 35 minutes? I'm leaning toward putting a small amount of just water in my bottle, but I really doubt I'll take anything. Weather will be very cool, low 50s, so no chance of over heating.

Warren I don't think you'd need it but if it were me I'd probably take one bottle of something either water or some sports drink. I know I wouldn't need it but I'd feel better having it with me.

Hi all, Super busy with work this week and I haven't caught up reading all the posts. I'll probably be racing a mini-sprint tri on Sunday for Father's day. Haven't decided 100% yet, but that's the plan for now. I hope everyone is doing well and has a great weekend.

A bit of motivational video my sister in law sent me a link to on YouTube today

Today was one of those days where things did not go exactly as planned. I had to go pick up my daughter from the train station this evening and she wound up not getting the earlier train then the train she did catch was late so I got a late start on my run workout this evening. I was planning a two hour run outdoors but being I started so late I decided to just do it on the treadmill. After missing 3 days this week not training was not even an option. I pretty much ran a half mary on the treadmill tonight and just keep it a slow and easy aerobic run so it was 13.1 miles in 2:21.

I know some of you guys could run a marathon in that time lol but I have been keeping all my runs slow and easy and pretty much zone 2 for the IM training. My target for the IM run is going to be 5 hours and I am going to try and keep it at 11 minute miles assuming I can do that after 112 miles on the bike. So I've been in the 9 to 11 minute range for all my runs.

Believe it or not it wasn't any worse being on the treadmill that long then it would be on the trainer. I am not sure which is worse the trainer or the treadmill but to be honest the time went by fairly quick. I am getting very good at keep my mind occupied while I do these long bike rides and runs so it doesn't bother me to be on there that long. The mental aspect of training for IM is going well and I got a lot of practice over the winter on the trainer.

The only thing I don't like about the treadmill is that I feel like I run harder and my legs take a beating on there as opposed to running outside. I feel like I run much easier and lighter outdoors. Not sure if anybody else feels that way but I just can't seem to keep that same rythym and stride indoors like I am able to outdoors.
