just a quick note about ryans bike accident, all party's were fine.  nobody actually even went down.  just hurt prides and hurt bikes, which might be worse than a few scrapes.

good to hear there were no injuries.

I crashed myself yesterday.  Stupidity really.  Got lucky and just have minor road rash...really minor.  I learned no matter how good of a bike handler I think I am, riding up a 45 degree embankment (think grease lighting scene from Grease) is great, until you hit that small patch of water...after that the road tires lose all traction and you go down.

Lisa!!!

Congrats!! That time is so impressive - you blew last year's time out of the water, even though you had a hard ride yesterday? I'm so impressed by the improvements you're making - actually inspiring You're going to knock some socks off this season!

The weather was just about perfect for a race too, eh?

As for me, my weekend ride was drama (and accident!) free I went out with MAFW this morning for a 35 miler - we finished around 2:20 on a hilly hilly course, which is great for me. I felt super strong, especially on the flats. I held my own with the group, which always makes me feel good...

Last week was supposed to be a bike focused week for me, but I wasn't able to do that since I was on vacation. This is supposed to be a step-back week, but I think I'm just going to incorporate last week into this week so I can spend more time on the bike... Really just planning on playing it by ear, but hopefully stepping up the time on the bike in general...

Steve - yup, I'm still with the same judge. I'll be with him until the end of August (a full year!), then I'll be starting work at a firm here in NJ. So I'm officially back in NJ for GOOD now! Mark actually just quit his job (eeks!) and moved back up. As soon as he finds a new job, we'll be finding a new place, which I'm really looking forward to! MAFW is actually Morris Area Freewheelers - haha, I seem to gravitate to counties that begin with M...

I can't believe Mooseman only has Devil's hill once now! hah - remember how scared I was after the first loop because I didn't know if I'd make it up a second time?

I will sign up for Bassman right now. I'm also debating between two running races - there is the Rutgers half marathon next weekend, or a 15k in Clinton the weekend after that. Right now I think I'll be doing the 15k in Clinton because its soooo much cheaper, and I know that 15k will be a good distance for me right now. I've been doing up to 9 miles regularly, but trying to race a full half marathon would be a bit of a stretch because I haven't run over 10 in a while...  So if I do that, I'll have three race weekends in a row -

Clinton 15k on April 24 (http://www.countryrun.us/ )
Bassman on May 2
Devilman on May 8

And then a break until Eman? Sounds like a fun few weeks!

LISA -

A 240-seconds p.r.! Count 'em -- 240! That takes a LOT of counting! ANYHOW, that is a dramatic improvement, evidence maximus that this year of heightened and enhanced training is paying off. Did Ryan experience a similar improvement?

It's obviously good that no one (esp. Ryan) was hurt in that mishap, and you're right about the bike -- damages there can be far worse than to the body. I certainly was not at all happy with happened to me in my crash last year, but far bettter me than my bike; the Ontario Health Insurance Plan covers me, but not my baby!

I know how he feels about the scratch! In '01 when i got my Cervelo P2K, I took it to school with the plan to ride after. I didn't want to leave it in the car all day, so i brought it into the classroom, which trhilled the kids no end. One of the nicest boys imaginable - Cullen Laughing (real name) - accidentally bumped it, and it fell, and part of the down tube scraped against my chair, and the result was a 3-inch long scratch right through the paint. I was aghast, almost devastated; I'd had the bike just a few days!!! Cullen felt terrible (probably more than I did) about it, and at the end of the year he gave me a real neat little blown glass bicycle. I wish Ryan had someone to give him a gift that would make up for the scratch.

Getting back to you and C.B. and your p.r. --- and the previous day's ride.........what dod you think you would've done at C.B. had you taken an ACTUAL REST DAY THE DAY BEFORE????? 5-7 minute p.r., mayhaps? I still think that doing the Musselman sprint the day before the Musselman half-iron in '08 cost me about 5-10 minutes on the HIM, so I have to feel that a hilly 53 mile ride would be more taxing than a sprint tri -- especially one with a perfectly flat run segment. (By the way, i'm contemplating doing the DoubleMussel88.7 again this year!)

NEIL -

Glad to hear you're okay!! And did the bike emerge unscathed? We hope?

I too am a good bike handler, but there comes a point at which conditions can overrule a person's handling skills. (The incredible crashes at the major bike tours are full evidence of that.) I have replayed mine from last year over and over and over, and the result is still the same -- I had no chance at all.

The tires I was using last year were (still are) slicks, and maybe the only chance I had was if they had decent tread. But I was going so fast to begin with, and needed to be so swervy in avoinding the car, that probably nothing could've saved me from going down. But when I replace those tires next week, I'm going with ones that are treaded!

Was it your old bike that you were on?

JESS -

Ahhh -- MORRIS Area Freewheelers! (Right church, wrong pew....) Good ride though -- 35 hillyX3 miles is no mean feat!

If this week was supposed to be soft, then your up-coming races would benefit from trying to make up some of the rides you missed. Normally it is best to let lost workouts just go, but if any of them are key ones then they should be squeezed in if at all possible. So if you have some wiggle-room this weekend -- ride, ride, ride!

My other vote is for the 15km over the half --especially with the two tris so soon after either!

My run went surprisingly well, thank you for asking! I ended up doing a fairly brisk 12.2km on a newly-found rail-to-trail route that is beautiful. I taped my left arch before, and it was good during the run and great ever since. the neuroma is still a mild concern, but didn't get in the way during the run and was no worse since then. As for the worry about refracturing my tibia, well, I could feel something there throughout the run, but maybe - hopefully!!! - it's just residual bruising or something like that. I will probably run that same route tomorrow, and hope for even better!

You and Mark looking for a new place remind me of daughter Jane and her boyfriend-of-many-years, Peter. They are looking for an apartment together in NYC, having lived with other roomates for the past four years. I think they have a great place lined up, somewhere way down on the lower east side, not too far from Union Square. I hope you and Mark can find a similarly good place!

Jane took the GMAT on Saturday and scored 730. She is thrilled.

And son Peter is in the final stages of his big bike trip from Phoenix to San Francisco. He did it with three friends from Guelph, ON, and they got to S.F. on Saturday and will spend a few days there before taking the California Zephyr to Chicago and then bussing from there. They left on about March 18, so it's been a while. We were quite worried about whtether they could pull it off, but he had been working on it for about a year and it all went really well.

Why am I telling you all this stuff? I dunno --- but thanks for being a receptive audience!

Jess - welcome back!  You've been missed.  Sounds like you have a very busy season lining up for you.  Can't wait to see how it pans out.

Lisa, glad Ryan is OK (feelings aside.)  Maybe he can view the sratch as a medal of honor.  A brand new shiny bike is not a worn, well-ridden bike!  A few scratches, chips, etc just means the bike is well loved.

Neil, glad to hear are OK as well.  Road rashes can be nasty.  I still remember the photos Steve so graciously shared with us after his accident.

Steve, you sound like a proud papa, and deservedly so!

We went to the mountains this weekend.  Glorious weather!  On Saturday we went to a local park to watch the finishers come in from the Blue Ridge Mountain Adventure Race.  I think this may actually be something that Ivan aspires to.  In co-ed teams of three, they run, canoe, and mountain bike 35 miles, plus they throw in some other tasks along the way for fun (one year they had to saw a tree in half.)  If interested, you can read about it here: http://adventureracega.com/  The first team team came in at 7 hours and 9 minutes!

MINDY -

From my perspective, that race sounds exceedingly demanding -- several times tougher than a tradtional triathlon. I am NEVER comfortable in a canoe, so that rates a -57 right there. I would likely destory myself on a mountain bike of 35 miles, so the ranking for that is -116. And as for cutting a tree in half --- well, that doesn't play to my strengths either, so we'll score that a -48. It's be a hell of a tough day for Stevie!

For team was 7:09? My lord --- is the final team STILL out there???

Hi all,
I'm lurking but not much to add. I've been active but everytime I do something my back is sore and stiff.
Wedding is quickly approaching (6/12). Kids are signing up for summer sports. I'm still employed. Mike's ear crystals are out of whack so he is on light duty until they straighten him out.

Ear crystals?

As for you, was there any doubt that you might not be employed? I remember something of a subtle shifting in rsponsibilties a few months ago, but I always felt that you were secure.

Have you seen anyone lately about the back?

Finally, you ALWAYS have soemthing to add! ANYTHING from you is worth reading and thinking about!! For true!!!

Feeling good now, about 72 hours post-Blossom? And is Ryan's bike back, and looking 99% beautiful?

MINDY and PATTY -

Thank you and thank you! I'm still waiting for 100% official confirmation (maybe a note from the President?), but it seems certain.....mostly.

I have had a few near-misses on this, and being the bridesmaid can be tiresome. My achilles heel has always been my own stupidity, which manifests itself in choosing races poorly. And this has two parts -- racing too often, and fitting in too many "meaningless" Canadian races. Doh and DOH! I keep telling myself that I have to be very selective at how often I race and the distances at which I race......but usually I fall off the wagon and just race whenever and whereever and for however long. I end up being the architect of my own disappointments!

That said, last year I was equally dopey. Well, maybe not equally, but I made some poor decisions in race choices/timing. Each off-season I vow to do better, to be smarter and more judicious, but then I let my enthusiasms run away with me. Sheesh! So part of my deliberations about signing up for races for this season is that I am trying my damnedest to not make dopey choices. And so fsar it is mostly working. I think.

(Something about old dogs not learning new tricks might apply here.........)

Steve,
Everyone around here keeps saying how lucky we are to have jobs; that's what I meant. There is always a chance with a public company that there will be layoffs. No worry right now however.

Well I've been doing the "Your Shape" now for about a month. I've been getting into the yoga part lately. While I find it difficult and not so pleasant, my balance seems to be improving. I also have been parking my car at work in the morning and taking a 20 mn walk around the park. I didn't today but I have every other day this week. So I'm moving but I have no plans to start jogging again. My back is still too tender. However, it is feeling better, and I have not been back to the Herbal Healings for a massage.

Nothing much going on around my houes. It is great to have Mike home every evening, but we never really see each other. He putters around outside, in the basement, or in a tv room, and I hardly run in to him. Still he's there to help with kids, and so on. I mean, we've been married 25 years...what is there new to talk about??

I haven't been out to look at our gardens or to pull weeds and clear out the fall leaves. I just don't have a desire to, which is really wierd because I love this time of year. Must be fear of reinjuring my back.

No painting either, yet I really want to. I'm not one to take a half hour here or there and paint though. If I don't have a few hours in which to paint I pretty much put it aside. My big thoughts are in the morning here at work, not at 4:30 when I'm exhausted and have nothing left!

Glad it's Friday!
Hope all are happy,
Patty

PATTY -

Yes, I know what it's like to avoid some of those domestic tasks, just out of fear of hurting oneself. It seems my body is becoming more and more "narrow" in what it can do, and as long as I keep to the same-old-same-old ranges-of-motion, I'm fine.....mostly.

We had a huge blitz about 10 days ago cleaning up a massive amount of debris that fell from out poplars duing an ice storm in December. I had been dreading that ever since, but now its' a done task and that's good! This was supposed top be a potato-planting weekend, but rains have done in that plan. But our convoluted attempts at generating shitake mushrooms have been completed.....and now all that's left is to wait 6-12 MONTHS. I don't like mushrooms, but did about 67% of the work involved. It is a real procedure and a half, not at all like any other type of domestic agriculture!

I hope the yoga option helps you -- and especially your back. There is a hump or two to be gotten over with yoga, but once there everything falls more or less into place, more or less quickly. Or so I'm told. My foray into yoga in 2000 ended me up with a sore back , but tha was just me being too reckless even though I am one of the 100 least flexible people in the universe.

And good on those morning walks, too! 20 min is a fair chunk, and not only is it good for the body, but supposedly good for the about-to-start-work mind. Are you finding that to be the case -- that you feel a bit sharper at the start of the actual work day?

Enjoy the weekend -- halleloo for the weekend!!!!!

hey all,

just got back from bumpass, va.  it was an awesome, awesome start to the season.

leading up to the race I had been dealing with what i thought could have been a calf pull.  come race day, it was feeling better, not great, but better.

the race was a 1500m swim, a 24 mile bike and a 10k.

the swim was the hardest swim i have ever done.  this lake is huge and the chop was ridiculous.  there were actually whitecaps.  i almost felt a little sea sick at times.  it was crazy, but i was happy that i kept my cool the whole time.  there aren't official results out yet, but i think my time here was 28-30min.

the bike was fun, flat, fast course and it was windy!!  probably great practice for Eman.  I had new race wheels and a new aero-helmet and felt great.  again, nothing official here, but i think i was at around 1:11 on this.  that would put my avg speed at around 20mph.

i felt like death on the run.  it was a pretty hot day and it was a terrible out and back-2 loop course on rolling hills.  boring, boring, boring.  as bad as i felt, my pace was good.  i have 7:27, 7:29, 7:33, 7:36, 7:34, 7:46 for an avg of 7:34.  i was really happy with this seeing as my pace at reston in the fall was 7:59.  i've taken off quite a bit of time.

overall I ended up at 2:30:something and placed 3rd in my age group.  the prizes were these really cool big beer mugs.  those were christened that very same night.  it was a great event for our team too.  we had 5 people out of about 15 leave with awards, including all three woman who are all 30-34.  one won 2nd over all, one won second AG and I got third.  there was a lot of drinking out of our beer mugs done on saturday night for sure.

it definitely was a great way to start the season.  I am so so happy with the results.

i hope you all had a great weekend.  steve, that is awesome news about the usat rankings!!! congratulations!!!!!

so, let me plant the see with you now.....we're thinking about doing triple t may 2011.  start waffling now

LISA -

Many thanks for that update! I was hoping to see some resuklts but nothing was up, so it's good to hear your prelim numbers.

You did terrific, and huge congrats on placing 3rd! But beyond that --- my calculations come to about 45:20 for a 10km off of a windy 40km bike and a nasty 1500m swim - WOW!!!!!!!! And that is for a run that you felt cruddy on, so give you better conditions.....and what are you capable of these days??

Bike -- 1:11 for 40km is very, very fine. (And are you happy with the aerohelmet? I want to know more about that as you continue to use it.)

And you did the swim really well, although that hardly surprises me at all. As you know, 30 minutes for 1500 is great for me even when the water is perfectly calm, so hearing you guesstimating 28-30 in whitecapped chop sounds like a real accomplishment.

I can hardly wait for the official results to be posted.

Did Ryan have a good one, too?

Oh, geez. Triple-T in OHIO, eh? The killer-diller one?? Well, all the more reason to go down to NC in October and do that one first -- nice flattish course, that, it sounds like. Are you to thinking of that at all? Oct 8-10? Let's keep talking!

And are you planning on getting any work doen today ---- or are you still celebrating? (Speaking of which, Lynn is 60 today!)

official results are up.

http://www.setupevents.com/files/RumpusInternational_AGWomen_2010.html

Ryan did great also.  he finished in 2:23.  we both had great bikes and runs, which made us both happy.

Officially, my swim was 29:08, again, given the conditions, i am happy.

The bike was 1:11:17 for an average of 20.92

The run was 46:47 for an average of 7:32 min/ mile.  good enough for 1st in my AG.

the aero-helmet was fine.  i thought it was just as comforable as my regular helmet.  i don't know if it made me any faster or even felt any faster, but it couldn't have hurt i guess.  this was my 1st race on new race wheels.  i picked up a pair of easton tempest 2 carbon wheels.  i took them out for the first time for a quick ride on friday and then raced with them on saturday.  whoa.  what a difference.  it was a windy day and a few times i was thrown a few feet acrossed the road.  it's scary getting used to them.  i'm a small rider so that doesn't help, but they definitely felt fast.

there is no thought at all of doing the october triple t because i just don't want to committ to something that big so soon after our first ironman.  ....but i have my sights set on ohio 2011.  one of the other woman in fexy (who finished 2nd overall in bumpass this weekend) and i were talking about teaming up.  it's a long way off, but it looks fun (in a stupid kind of way).

i'm sorry to hear about the neuroma thing?  how are you feeling?  that sucks.

...work by the way, is not going well this morning

next up, tour de skyline on April 30 to May 1st.  it's a 2 day ride, 110 miles out skyline drive and 110 miles back the next day, 20,000 feet of climbing.  ugh.  the good news is that it is an untimed, no pressure,  fun ride.  hopefully i can finish.  drop outs are common.

what does this group have coming up next on their agendas?
