Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() honestly, steve, i have no idea how much of anything i consume. counting calories, grams, etc is just beyond tedious for me. we eat very "clean". we only shop at whole foods (except ryan does go to a regular grocery store for jelly). we cook at home from scratch nearly every meal we have, eat a ton of fruits and veggies, etc. that's all i have the attention span to do. if i start feeling run down, i'll eat more. ryan and i were just talking about this this morning. i coudn't even guess how many calories i consume on a regular basis. i have no idea how many i go through in a workout. no clue. it just doesn't interest me at all. i am very focused on eating foods that have no hormones/steroids in them, but that is the extent of my passion.
i smiled thinking of luna enjoying the beach on your recent trip. belle's first (and only) time to the beach was our wedding. she was beyond happy. she loved chasing waves and trying to bite them. it really was one of the happiest i have ever seen her. she appears to be feeling MUCH better, which relieves me to no end. she is getting back to her old self with the exception of her leg. she definitely injured something there. it is causing her some discomfort and difficulty in moving around normally, but she seems much happier. when we go back in next week for follow up blood work, we'll have them look at that too. at her age, though, i'm not sure how much we will be able to do about it. we've already had it repaired once two years ago. i don't think any of us could go through it again. she might just have to be a hop along. i hope you are all having a great week. we have the first of our back to back century rides tomorrow. we are doing the reston century course. i am so happy we bailed on tds. aside from feeling better about belle, it will be Sooooooooo nice to sleep in my own bed after these rides. the weather looks perfect too. i'll turn in a full report tomorrow. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lisa, so sorry to hear about Belle! I know dogs are our children (better sometimes, in fact than the real things) so it's no wonder you were stressed out. I hope she is doing better. I love the new avatar, by the way, with your awesome helmet! Neil, sorry to hear about your illness. If it really was the flu, laying low and resting is the only way to go. Even easy exercise would likely prolong your illness. Hope everyone has a good weekend. We are headed out of town (again.) This time for my cousin's wedding, in a small town in TN about 4 hours from here. If the weather cooperates, we're going to See Rock City! at Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga on the way home. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() NEIL - Mega-congrats on the compensation......which as far as I'm concerned you MORE than richly deserve! It's also good that the gameplan hasn't changed radically; well, that's my own humble opinion speaking. My former school excelled at radical changes seemingly out of nowhere and with no really concrete preparation. It was a great argument for "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Full rest + good choice --- especially now when there isn't anything on the near horizon. Well, there's the small matter of a move in about 90 hours, but..... Are you getting really psyched about that? maybe that won't happen until the last doodad had been placed lovingly in the last box, but from where I'm sitting I'm still lusting after your new place. So if you're not yet fully excited, then take comfort or something in the fact that I am living vicariously through you on this one.....and I'm more than excited for you, me,, Milagros, AND the Queen of Prussia! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - Yesterday's run went well. Enough. Every so often I would feel something that would get my attention, but it never developed into anything awful. This seems to be forming a pattern of sorts, and if it can stay about like this, well, I can live with it. I have never counted calories, and even if I had the organizational skills to do so, I probably wouldn't. We too eat quite well, but not like you and Ryan, from the sounds of what you wrote. You two do really well! Righteous!! "Back to back" century rides? Um, which back to which back --as in days/dates? Would that be Friday AND Saturday? that back-to back? Oh, my! Of course you each have the other, which would make all the difference in the world to me. I wouuld certainly be much moreinclined to ride long if I didn't have to always do it all on my own little own lonesome. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() On a maybe ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MINDY - I've been educated! I'd never heard of Rock City, but now I know all about it. (Thank you, internet.) It sounds pretty cool, and I hope you get a day that provides for glorious views! Have fun! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - Are you doing Bassman? I'm very sorry that I am not. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you are, exact some revenge on that run course for me, okay? I still owe it TWO!!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() stevebradley - 2010-05-01 8:23 AM JESS - Are you doing Bassman? I'm very sorry that I am not. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Steve! Yes, I am doing Bassman tomorrow, and I was totally planning on exacting all kinds of revenge on this course... until I saw the forecast! High of 87!!! This is like how I ran the Chicago marathon in 2008 - assuming that the weather would be better than when they had to cancel it due to heat in 2007. Somehow, it got back up to 90 during the 2008 race (October in Chicago? who would've guessed?) Anyway, here's the forecast from weather.com for Tuckerton, NJ: Intervals of clouds and sunshine in the morning with more clouds for later in the day. Near record high temperatures. High 87F. Any race day forecast with "Near record high temperatures" is not a good thing. I'm still hoping to have some revenge on this course, because I think I can race smarter this year than last. Here are the splits from last year: Swim: 17:20 1:44My original goal was to cut ten minutes off. I should, under normal conditions, be able to take 8 minutes off in the run alone. I haven't averaged 10:42 in any run in the past year, even training... I had a really great swim last year - I don't know that I'll be swimming that well tomorrow because I honestly haven't spent enough time in the pool. My goal over the next month is to ramp that up, so I'm just going to try and be consistent and well-paced tomorrow. The Bike: I have a lot more going for me this year than last year. First, I know how to drink while riding - I'm embarrassed to admit that I actually pulled my bike over at one point last year so I could drink because I was so nervous... Also, I'm comfortable with the aero-bars now, which should be good on the flat course. So, I guess my goal for the bike will be to be around 1:35 (for the 29 miles - so 17.5-18 pace?)... But that might be too optimistic. Run? Goal is to not die. I actually think I'm going to study the run map a little tonight so I can remember how many twists and turns there are. The problem last year was that there were so many out and back loops, and I wasn't sure where I was, and it was soooo hot. Hopefully we can avoid all of that, and the run can be my strongest leg (which I think it should be). So, wetsuit is out of the closet, and hanging up, ready to go. I'm going to run out and get stuff to put in a cooler. I need to organize my gym bag. Clean up my bike and plan my nutrition. Then get a good night of sleep! Will have to leave early - before 5! On a side note, I got new bike shoes this week that I'm excited about using. They're from Louis Garneau, and they're tri-specific. Very pretty: http://www.louisgarneau.com/in-en/product/305572/1487068/_/WOMEN_TRI_SPEED_SHOES#first I've only used them on the trainer so far, but hopefully they're good tomorrow! Super comfy, and seem more ventilated than my other shoes (cheapies I got from Performance Bicycle for $40 ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Up to my neck in boxes. It's looking incredibly organized though...almost all in boxes, even labeled to what room they are going in. Furniture of course, which will be a pain. But I'm thinking it will be not too hard for the 3 bloaks I hired to carry all this nonsense come Monday. Good news though...I feel much better physically. I think by Tues I will be ready for a workout. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dear lord. it's over. ugh. 103 miles yesterday with some major climbing followed by a 2.3 mile quick brick. i felt like complete death on the bike. i haven't done anything approaching that distance this season so far. i think 59 has been my longest. i was really happy with the brick run. i had no idea how i would feel running off a 100+ ride, but for my first time I averaged sub 9. i was happy with that. i think it averaged 8:45s or something like that without really pushing it. today was just about getting it done. 100 miles even. the purpose of it (from my coach) is for mental toughness. his theory is that back to back centuries make everything else seem easier. just from this weekend, that felt true. it's funny how it changes your perception of pain and distance. it's april, and i ran sub 9s off a century ride. that does something for your confidence. tomorrow is the last big day in my hell week. 12 mile run. that's not going to feel great on these legs that's for sure. i'm glad your run went well. is there anything precautionary you can do? salt water soak or something like that? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - Oh, I'm envious of you to be sure --- even with the forecast! My advice would be tp take it easy on the firts stretch of the run, the part that goes through the woods. I say that becasue that was where I began my blew up, really just roming through the woods so I could get out on the road again. I don't remember my time at mile 1, but I do remember being amazed at how quickly I did it....and wondering if the marker had been misplaced! But really, woods or not, i think it comes down to common sense after a ride of 29 miles (flat or not) --- don't going trying to blow oiff the walls right from the start of the run! I expect your bike split to be dramatically betterr than last year's, for the reasons you state. I think that alone will make the race a real treat fo you! Is your goal still to view Bass as a lead-in to Devil, which in itself is a lead-in to Eagle? If so, it ounds like a wise approach to me! And "near record high temperatures" is MUCH better than "record high temperatures"; trust me!!! ![]() Have a wonderful day down there, and I can hardly wait for your report! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() NEIL - "It's looking incredibly organized though". Would I expect anything less from you??? But even though "incredibly organized" is part of your m.o., I'm glad for your sake that you feel it that way. In fact, you're sounding rather sublime, right down to the prediction of a workout on Tuesday. You're the King of Cool, baby! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - If there weren't laws in place to prohibit the killing of coaches I'm sure you might have been tempted soemtime in the past 36 hours.....but now that it's done I think you can see the method - nay, wisdom! - in his madness. You are much tougher today than you were yesterday morning, and it's a toughness you will keep calling upon for years to come. You are certifiably centurized, twice over! And tomorrow's run may not be pretty and you may be contemplating homicide yet again, but just slog through those 12 miles, rest for a day or two, and see how it all feels to you then. Heartfelt congrats from me to you, in advance! I'm wearing a Columbia Triathlon sweatshirt now, have nbeen all evening.....and hope that it cconfers good karma on this whole enterprise. It's still looking good, or at least better in a cautiously optimistic kind of way. If it actually happens, however, i will need to do some more serious cycling in the next 20 days. The swim will be ugly, as I'm swum lots and lots, but nothing even close to 1500m solid. I mean, i know I can do that anytime I want.....but the thing is I don't want to do it. this is all aprt of my psychological pool denial, which each off-season is worse than the previous off-season. I log lots and lots of sessions in the pool, but most are just easy "stroke improvement". (Yeah, right....) But if my feet and right calf hold up, I'm looking to have a good run, and I think I can manage a very good bike. I feel I have it in me, even now, but just have to refine it over the next copuple of weeks --- plus do a longer brick or two. But this is all preliminary, as nothing is carved in stone from the domestic end of things here. Anyhow, I'm hopeful. Neuromas were fine today, actually perfect after about 3km (I did 11.6km). And a calf issue I'd had for a couple of days, well, i felt the calf on about stride, but as of now, five hours later, I'm feeling nothing untoward. This is very reminiscent of what happened at DoubleMussel in '08, when I hurt it in the sprint on Saturday and wasn't at all sure it will make it through 2 miles of the half-iron the next day....but then it posed NO problems at all on the half iron. I can't explain such nonsense!! Once more, congratulations on the double century. You are two tough cookies!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Two Centuries in the same weekend...now I am really jealous! Nice job. |

![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() NEIL - My thoughts are more along the lines of "There but for the grace of god go I".......but that's just me filtering it through my solo existence, where even one century is fraught with worry about a "mechanical" way out in the boonies. But if I can picture myself doing back-to-back centuries WITH someone else.......yup, I'm jealous, too! Lisa. Ryan. Strong like bulls. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - What an awesome performance, Jess!! You ANNIHILATED thta course today! T1 -- 3:04 faster than last year bike - 3:19 faster than last year T2 - 1:09 faster than last year RUN!! - 10:37 faster than last year TOTAL ---- 17:14 faster than last year Woo-flippin'-hoo!!!! And as fo the swim, you're thinking that it reflects too little pool time, but i have it on very good authority that the course was mismeasure this year by about, oh, I think it was 57 meters that I heard. Yeah, that's it -- measured 57 meters too long this year. The nerve of them, eh? Some people's kids! ![]() Did you have any sort of Support Crew there today? Mark? Your fine folks? Le Mutt? It was very warm and muggy here, and I was worried about what it might be doing to you down there. Obviously nothing that you couldn't handle with dignity and aplomb, that's for sure! Okay, take a day or two easy, then maybe a couple of crisp bikes and a shortis and longish run (the last no later than Wednesday?) before Devilman and you should be fine -- and then some. Oh -- and maybe a swim, too? Just maybe? ![]() ![]() Rest well tonight, and bask in the glory of what could well be a watershed performance. Superb work, Jess!! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - ACK! We just cyber-crossed, and I see you have posted in more detail. I'll get back to tat one later! (Now get to bed, you silly goose. You're supposed to be tired after all that this morning!) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jess, i am super excited for you!!!!!! what an incredibly impressive improvement over a shorter distance race. that is really hard to do!!!!! that run improvement is just sick. sick. you are right to be stoked.
hmmm, my saddle, let me go check. i have the terry butterfly titanium saddle http://www.rei.com/product/664274?preferredSku=6642740010&cm_mmc=cse_froogle-_-datafeed-_-product-_-6642740010&mr:trackingCode=FD82071B-81F9-DE11-BAE3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA i would HIGHLY recommend a bike fitting. HIGHLY. the difference it can make is astounding, especially for longer distances.....and it is WAY less expensive then medical bills for injuries!!!!! I was in aero for almost the full 100 miles on friday and NEVER had back pain. in fact, i go to aero to be comfortable, not the other way around. definitley get a fit. ..but really, awesome result. is this your first tri podium?? awesome!!!!! congrats. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ...as for me, steve, you were completely right. i was drafting the mean email to my coach during yesterdays 12 mile run. he uses the vdot method of running coach, so i have different paces depending on a 3k time trial that i did. my E (easy) pace is 9:27. my M (marathon) pace is 8:04. my I (interval) pace is 6:58, and there are some other paces thrown in there. yesterdays run was supposed to be 2 miles at E, 8 miles at M, and 2 miles at E. the email i was drafting to him in my head was to tell him how mean it was to set me up for failure. there is no way after 200 miles on the bike in 2 days that M pace is achievable. no way. in the end, i wasn't too far off. my 8 M pace miles averaged 8:15s. i think the thing i am most excited about this weekend is how steady my run has been. even with with the high mileage. the fact that off the bike friday i was able to run 8:42s comfortably (granted only for 2.3 miles) REALLY makes me happy. my heart rate data shows that i was at 165 avg. that is REALLY low for me. max effort is around 190. ..and then, on yesterdays run, with my legs feeling like anchors, I was still able to turn out 8:12s. ridiculous. heart rate there averaged 164, again REALLY low for me. this week did everything i was hoping it would do in the best case scenario. it gave me a super amount of confidence. ...not necessary for Eagleman, but for IMloo. the weather conditions also were good for a test. all three days had highs at or approaching 90 degrees....and yesterdays run, in addition to hot was seriously humid. great practice for loo.
i'm actually really excited for columbia. i'm interesting in doing a race that i've done before to see what true improvements there have been. rumpass was fun, but i had never done that course before. i'm really excited that columbia is still on your radar. i'm keeping my fingers crossed! |
