Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm still alive Steve - just quiet. I took most of this week off - did maybe 4 hours of training, most of it this weekend... Felt good. I am rested and ready to go for the next three weeks! Should be a busy week here - work Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday I'm going to Atlantic City for the NJ Bar Convention - pretty much every law clerk in the state is going, so it should be fun. Back to work on Friday, then to Vermont on Saturday for my brother's graduation! Then home on Sunday for a friend's wedding. And I have big training plans for this week (8+ hours if I can!) so we'll see how it goes! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS!!! Well, you certainly were entitled to a quiet week, given the three previous weekends of exertions! Given that, ~4 hours of workouts sounds about right for the past week. It'll be interesting to see how you manage to fit in 8 hours of stuff this coming week, however! I can't forget that you are one of standard-bearers of multitasking, so if anyone can do it, that would be you. The NJ Bar Convention, eh? Am i right in assuming that this is really just an excuse for law clerks to play for a few days? I mean, Atlantic City? C'mon........ And that was kind of your brother and your friend to orchestrate their fetes so that you could attend both. Remember, though -- those speed limits apply to YOU, Ms. Palmer! ![]() Speaking of which.....did you hear about the deaths of the three triathletes on Friday. They, along with three others, were riding to Sherbrooke from montreal to do a training camp for IMLP, and all of them were hit by a pick-up truck. Three women were killed, and a man and two other women were seriously hurt. Alcohol probably wasn't a factor, but the road doesn't have a shoulder and people driving on it often drive VERY fast -- you know Quebec drivers, right? I am still shaken by that, and it certainly affected my mindset on my own ride today. Have a good week, and behave yourself in Atlantic City! ![]() ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I haven't been able to do much the past 7 days. I think I may have a stress fracture in my right foot. Limping around and it is painful. Considering I am at hospitals all day I should try and get an xray sometime this week. This morning I was able to do a morning workout with Milagros right in our backyard watching the sun come up. We did push ups, sit ups, crunches, lots of strentgh stuff that didn't involve the feet. Anyway, it look we are a bit doormat here now, but for me...I am just in a hard place right now physically and hoping to come out of it soon so I can start training seriously again to get ready for IMAZ. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SAX - Your and my bike shop guy both. He was waylaid by a s.f. 9 miles into Around The Bay, but has started running again. And in his case, he ignored a few symtoms early on. In your case, when did you suspect it? Also, where exactly is it bothering you? Any swelling? Definitely get an x-ray asap! However, that might not be truly definitive; in the case of my tibial s.f. in '00, I needed a bone scan to finally detect the thing! Let me know about this, okay? The good news about it -- whatever "it" truns out to be -- is that it is still a looooong ways from IMAZ. Thank god fro small mercies, eh? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hey steve, we are definitely still going to columbia. the more distractions, the better. sunday was a quiet day, and i did not do well. Fortunately, we have the columbia oly, jim mcdonnell lake swim, reston sprint and eagleman in that order for the next 4 weekends. i missed a lot of workouts last week, but still managed to log 9 hours. it was not the build up for eagleman that it was scheduled to be, but you can't plan these things. i have really struggled to find the motivation to get my workouts in. things that were really important to me two weeks ago, i suddenly find myself not really caring about. eagleman is 4 weeks from sunday and i have made the committment to myself to hit every workout between now and then. i just need to buckle down. we did the eagleman bike course this past saturday. i used it as a race simulation...race wheels, aerohelmet, nutrition, etc. i'm really glad i did, too, because it was REALLY windy and that feels really scary at first on my race wheels. i found myself being tossed around all day. at first that is a really scary feeling, but after about an hour i got used to actually having to lean into the wind in order to not get thrown around. my weight has dropped to about 116lbs, so i'm like a freaking sail out there. all in all, i did the course in 2:50. that was a 15 min pr from my race last year. i was happy with that. hopefully i can pick up a few more minutes during the race. we rode another 14 miles afterward easy and then bricked 3 miles. i ended up averaging 7:13s for the brick. that was super fast for me. i don't think it is sustainable for the full half, but hopefully i can get a little time in the bag during the first half of the run. ideally, my goal is to average 7:34s on race day. we'll see. it's a funny thing about this sport. i find myself going from confident to not and back again every day. i was worried that i had "lost fitness" during last weeks drama, but all i can do is have faith in the work i have put in up until now.
so, as for columbia, i'm a little nervous because i haven't done much hill running lately... or at all for that matter. we will be heading down on friday and coming home sunday. i'll go back and read your previous post about your plans and get back to you. i hope everyone is well. lisa |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ok, i'm back steve. read your note and talked to ryan. we are leaving for columbia mid day on friday and will pick up our packets then. depending on when you get in on saturday, we can meet you at the expo or at the lake for bike check in. also, depending on when you get in, lunch sounds lovely. we are staying with ryan's dad in ellicott city. you are also more than welcome to come over for dinner on saturday if you would like. probably around 6:30pm. his address is 9213 maple rock dr, ellicott city, md 21042. my cell is 703.371.1540. dinner will probably be something like grilled chicken and pasta salad. let me know!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lake Placid Training camp/Volunteer/Next year sign up trip several members of my tri group, team fexy, are renting a house in lake placid for a week during this years IM. There are still several slots open. here is the house: it can hold 18 and we currently have 11 committed. costs will be determined by the number of people we get in the house. currently at 11 people, the cost per person would be around $570 for the week. with 18, the costs would be $350. the house can be rented either tues-tues or wed-wed. i don't think any firm decision has been made. dates are roughly 7/21-7/28. only 1 person of the 11 is actually racing. the rest of us are going there to use it as a training camp, volunteer and/or register for next years race. this race is one of the most popular IMs and has sold out in the past before it even opens to the general public. ryan and i are going to use it as a training camp and get a feel for the IM experience. i think it will be a game time decsion whether we register for next year. if you are interested, let me know, and i can put you in contact with the woman organizing it. thanks! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The pain appears to be the 2nd metatarsal. Standing and sitting hurt (standing more of course) and to walk there needs to be a limp as I seem to not want to flex off the toes when I walk. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() NEIL - Well, a s.f. of the 2nd tow is the most common -- but that doesn't mean that is what you have. Can you reproduce the pain by pressing on the shaft of the metatarsal bone from the top? Here is something I'm reading right now: "Bend the toe downward and note how the knuckle responds. The pain can be 1/2 inch to about 2 inches behind this joint. If the pain is anywhere else it is not a classic stress fracture." And: "After about 2 weeks a bump can usaully be felt on the metatarsal in thre location of pain." How long has this been going on? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA! LISA! LISA! All righty then! I will likely be leaving here early-early Saturday, thus avoiding two motel nights. Plus, Lynn has been gone since Tuesday morning at a meetining in Montreal, and even though she is due back this evening, it probably would be a nice thing to hang with her all tomorrow and tomoorow night, rather than feel compelled to leave late afternoon. I will be staying at a Comfort Inn in Jessup. It's on Route 1, and provides quick access to Centennial Park via, um, maybe it's got a "25" in its number? I did this schtick each of my three years at Columbia, '03-'05, but the details are a bit hazy right now. I'm sure it will all come back to me once I get in the area! So, unless the plan above changes, i won't be rolling into packet pick-up until 1-2pm -- kind of late for lunch. The dinner invite is very wonderful, and right now I'll tentatively say yes, but I may have to wait to see how with it I am once I get there. With each passing year I seem to do these long drives less effectively, and the last thing I want to do is fall asleep during dinner at Ryan's dad's place! That might be a problem in terms of planning, and if that's the case then I will pass on the offer and keep things simple for the three of you. (Plus, I can't eat cheese, which adds to my potential tediousness!) I will have Lynn's cell phone with me, and that number is 613-612-1867. I will try to phone you as I approach Baltimore, maybe as I cross into Maryland. I will hit pick-up first and see how much money I can avoid spending, and then I'll head over to the park. I might be interested in a short ride just to get my legs going, and that might include the stretch along Homewood Road until it turns into Folly Quarter at the rotary thingie. Any appeal? Does that sound like a plan? Kinda sorta? Onward to #2 to you! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA again - We just cyber-crossed! Oh, my......an autograph from Natascha?? Oh, lead me not into temptation! Well, I will factor that into my thinking, but I'll probably keep with the plan that I just posted to you. I think. ![]() Now on to #2 to you, which will really be #3, I guess. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA once more - On Tuesday I drove down to Placid to buy a pair of Newtons and do a run and ride along one of the glorious roads in the Adirondacks. Once again, I was struck by the regional beauty and all, and as with every time I travel through there, I get to thinking about IMLP. And then I get home, and find your post about the Fexy rental -- which looks stunning to the nth degree! That is a very, very cool plan you all have, and it is very tempting. I will have to bounce it (ever-so-gingerly.....) off Lynn, but I can't guarantee that she will go for it as a smart way to spend my money. In fact, she will probably reject it -- especially if she knows that it might also involve spending $550 to sign up for IMLP '11! What is more likely is that I could make it down there a couple of times to train with you -- if the crew is not limiting training to people in a chalet. Placid is about 2.5 hours from home, really quite convenient, and I'll likely be down there on Thursday the 22nd to hit the expo (especially the Newton booth) when it opens at 10am. Next! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA, quatrieme - Are you interested in the CompuTrainer? Should I bring it down and leave it with you until either (a) forever, if you decide you want it, or (b) whenever, depending on when I get down there to retreive it. I will not be using it until heaven-knows-when, so it could just be for the two of you to test out and play around with. Let me know, okay? How are you feeling, body-wise? I'm doing the usual pre-race inventories, paying special attention to my shoulder and my left inner calf. The latter was there to greet me upon waking this morning, and may in fact be just a phantom ache/twinge. The shoulder is quite real, and most swims aove the past month have left it sore. I think it is partially a nerve-pinch, and maybe a slight muscle tear in the deltoid. It could also be the precursor of an impingement, which is DEFINITELY bad news if it comes to that. So, I am likely scrapping OWS until Sunday. I have been in twice in the past three days, and as much as I just want to continue hitting the open water (this year was my earliest ever, with Monday (the 17th) being the first. But the reality is that whatever I do between now and Columbia won't help hardly at all, so I will just go into the race and swim as well as I'm able to. I don't think the shoulder will affect me at all on race day --especially if I can stay out of the water until then! ![]() I'm feeling great about my runs, and the bike will probably go okay -- but I'm not sure. I've got tough competition from David Adams and Dan Chasey, at the very least, so I will need a strong bike and run to compensate for an early-season swim that will be even weaker than the quasi-pathetic ones I produce later in a season! ![]() Taper plans? I think i'm tapering this week; not sure. I'm tempted to do a ridea nd run up in the Gatineau Hills in a couple of hours, but I'm not surre that will help. Will it hurt? It could. The extremely hilly bike up there is too hilly even for Columbia, so if I could somehow "dumb it down", I would. I can get in a good rolling/hilly run there, but I've had a few of those recently and might only run the risk of hurting myself if I do another. The option is ~7km - easyfasteasyfasteasyfasteasy - so that might be a better option. We'll see! |
|
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() X-ray of the foot was negative for fracture. Still hurts though and I am limping. The concern is not the "occult fracture" which is too small to see right now. I was told wait another week and if the pain is not better get another study done. Comparing the two, I am told small calcifications will form if there is a fracture (I suppose that is what you are referring to being able to feel Steve). FOr now, still down. Perhaps I will get to the pool. We'll see. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() NEIL - Well, potentially good that the x-ray showed no fracture. But maybe what they were talking about with "another study" would be a bone scan, which is what finally revealed my tibial stress fracture. That too is an easy process, although it takes time --- go in and drink something like nitroglycerin, then return about four hours later and have the actual bone scan. The way it works is that the potion seeps into any cracks or breaks in a bone, and show on a big screen as a "hot spot" which glows white. It was all very cool --- the unfortunate result nowithsatnding, that is! Yes, i think another name for what I was quoting from would be calcifications. That rings a bell, anyhow. Aside from the pain aspect, I "displayed" the s.f. poorly. On a few visits to my sports doc, he tried the tuning fork test - getting it vibrating and then placing the tip of the handle on the tibia. For most people, when it lands on The Spot they go through the roof, but i consistently felt nothing. Up and down he went....and nothing. I could even point clearly to where it hurt whenever it hurt, and he would go right there with the tuning fork......and nothing. I did not make it easy for him. (For whatever reason, I seem to display most injuries poorly. My mother might've said "No sense, no feeling." Thanks, ma.) Thanks for the update, keep 'em comingg. (Any bike rides or swims for you?) And.......Is the new house simply marvelous? I'm figuring YES! |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hey steve, just a few quick things as we are heading out the door. 1.) no cheese is no problem for saturday, whatever you decide is fine 2.) no need for a formal plan, when you get close, give us a ring. 3.) if you are looking to sell the computrainer, probably best to bring it. if ryan and i don't end up buying it (we haven't really talked about it), i would be happy to sell it for you within our team and forward you $$. it will probably be easier for me to sell it here and mail you a check than it will for you to ship it somewhere. whatever you decide is fine. yay!! again, my cell is 703.371.1540 ryan is 703 407 0697 see you tomorrow!!!
....oh, and it wouldn't be any problem at all for you to just come to LP for the day and jump in on a workout or two. the more the merrier. as it gets closer our group might also be open to breaking the cost up into individual day slots too for folks who can't do the whole week. not sure. a lot of the people who are going are also doing columbia, so you will no doubt meet them on sunday......hey if you sell your computrainer for $800 that is 3-4 nights at the lake house AND 2011 LP registeration fee

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA! Most excellent! The plan is still to leave by 5am, and right now I'm just trying to keep my emotional blinders on and not dwell on the fact that as of this very moment, i could be in the presence of The Divine Ms. Natascha. It's 6:30 -- she's there, and I'm here. Boo-hoo! But life goes on, and I have your cell # and Ryan's cell #. The car is kinda sorta cleaned, the bike is cleaned, i think all my gear is organized, and the body mostly seems willing. The shoulder remains a problem, but i think it will fine on the swim. Everything from the waist down is surprisingly good, with no hints of PF, Achilles, and calf woes. My runs this week have been superb, and the last two bikes were solid. Perhaps I'm almost ready for this thing! See you tomorrow afternoon!!! |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What a weekend!!!! steve, it was so nice seeing you again. how lucky i've been to be able to race with you twice in the last two years!! it was a successful race for steve, ryan and i. i will let steve share his news, but ryan and i placed 2nd in the married couple division (yay!) with a combined time of 5:04. I placed third in w30-34. this was quite a shock since my race got off to a challenging start. it was a rough swim start for me. definitely aggressive. my goggles filled with water, then i lost my contact. i would not have been able to start the bike with only one lense. i have VERY bad vision and it would not have been safe at all. i stopped, treaded water, confirmed that i had, indeed, lost my lense, reached up and found it on my lower lid. miracle of miracles. somehow admist the jostling of the swim start i managed to tread water, put my contact back in and continue on. by this time, though, i was fairly rattled. had a bit of trouble breathing, got mildly panicked and back stroked for a minute until i regained my composure. i had a goal of placing here, but the negative self talk started in the swim. "there is no way i can place now with a terrible swim. why bother?" fortunately i was able to push through that and plug along. i ended up feeling pretty strong on the second half of the swim and only finished 6 seconds slower than last year even with the contact/panic debacle. i will turn that into a positive thought as i head into eagleman in 3 weeks. my watch wasn't working after the swim, so i had no idea what my time was. i knew i wasn't going to place anyway so i just hammered along. didn't feel like i "crushed" the bike, but i passed a TON of people. men and women. i also noticed that compared to years past the course didn't feel hard at all. this definitely is a testament to the training my coach has had me doing this year. it's funny that things that once seemed hard suddenly feel much easier. i finished the bike feeling strong, not tired at all, and hit the run. i had no idea what pace i was going, but i did notice that i was passing a lot of fit, fast looking guys. then, about 2 miles into the run i started passing a bunch of women in my age group. in the back of my mind i was thinking maybe there was a shot i could still hit the 5th place spot (columbia gives awards 5 deep). i had no idea what time i finished in because my watch didn't work, but once the times were posted i came in 3rd in AG with a 2:35:59. my original "perfect race" goal was 2:36. HA! This was just over a 15 minute PR from this race last year and a 27 min PR over this race 2 years ago. it's been really gratifying to see the improvement. I finished the swim 27th in AG, finished the bike in 10th and finished the race in 3rd. only one woman who finished out of the water before me dnf'ed (my teammate, due to a flat). i'm really happy with the improvement in my standings in the bike and the run. if i could only get the damn swim down. ugh. 36/519 women (including pro's and elites). i'm really happy with it. i was also super stoked that ryan and i got an award for 2nd fastest married couple. it's nice that columbia has this award. it's fitting, too, because i would have NEVER even tried this sport if it weren't for him. steve raced really well and did awesome!!!! ...but, again, i'll let him tell his own story. it was great seeing him again. looking forward to seeing jess and nathan(?) in a few weeks!!!! Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() YO, GANG! Lisa is being WAY too modest with what she did yesterday. Here are her split times: swim ---- 27:46 T1 ------- 2:32 bike ---- 1:18:49 (19.3 mph) T2 ------- 1:13 run ------ 45:40 (7:21/mile) Good god almighty, those are truly incredible. They would be incredible on a flattish or rolling course, but Columbia is a very difficult for both the bike and the run. It has been said for years that it has the toughest olympic/intermediate run course, and in my experience that is very true. I saw Lisa before the results were posted, and she was dejected because of the swim/contact problem. But then, 30 minutes later, she was on top of the world, just about -- and for good reason. Columbia ALWAYS draws a stacked field, so for her to podium there is really something else -- especially in that age group. Lisa told me the day before that her coach had said to her something like "You're going to place, right?" And she told him something like "Um, this IS Columbia, you know?" But she did it, she did it , she did it! As for Ryan, he had a phenomenal bike, in particular, clocking in at 21mph. Mercy. He was 13/manymanymany in his a.g., which is arguably the toughest, 35-39. Moreover, he was something like 132/everybody, which is a huge accomplishment. His swim was 25 or so, and his run was 46 (Lisa outran him!!) I will write more later, but ut was a good one for me, too. It was Redemption Day, as my last time there in '05 had me flatting on the bike. But yesterday I did the bike in 1:16:36, good for 19.9mph, and the run in 47:12, which really pleases me. The swim was barely mediocre due to a couple of things (mostly, I'm STILL not a good swimmer!), but I still managed to win the age group -- sort of. It's an "asterisk" win, because the real winner, who beat me by THREE SECONDS, was given the more presitgious Grand Masters award, so because there is no "double-dipping" on awards, I bumped up to 1/21 -- instead of the more accurate 2/22. Oh, well, I guess I'll take it! And there's a story behind me trying to catch him - like, for about 4.3 miles!! - but the short of it is that I couldn't quite pull it off; I needed an extra 15 yards of run course! Lisa says I would've been a schumck to pass him at the finish line, and she's probably correct. Plus, he's 64 and I'm only 61, so full props to him for what he did. I guess maybe I deferred to my elder, eh? ![]() Lisa is a remarkably generous person -- just so you all know! She's also a pistol. Remind me to tell you all about "What about the Albrechts?!?", and her storming-of-the-awards-platform in order to see justice fully served for her and Ryan. Never cross Lisa, is the take-home there! And she lost her sunglasses during the race, but I'll let her tell you how it happened --- and WHY it happened! ![]() ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA!!! CONGRATS! I checked the results this morning, and I was so excited for you (and Ryan and Steve!) That race sounds incredible. I love how you went from 27 to 10 to 3. So amazing ![]() ![]() I basically had a ridiculous week last week. Work Monday and Tuesday. Atlantic City for the Bar Convention on Wednesday and Thursday. Went to bed at 2:30 am on Friday morning, got up at 4:30 am to drive to Hackensack for work on Friday. Worked all day (crazy bc the judge's secretary was out). Went home, packed and left for Vermont early Saturday. Got to VT late Saturday afternoon, nice family dinner, hung out with family friends. Went to bed late, got up at 5 and managed to get in an 8 mile run before having to get ready to go to Graduation. Graduation started at 8, my brother's name wasn't called until after 1pm!!!! Got straight in the car, drove down to NJ for a friend's wedding. Got there around 7, stayed until 11:30. Went home, passed out. Got up at 5:45 and did a run, and now I'm at work. I think I'll be taking off tomorrow. The Judge isn't here, and I'm exhausted! Plus, it should be nice enough out to get in a ride? I didn't make my 8 hour goal last week - only 6. Which is still pretty good given the insanity. This week should be much better... Anyway, CONGRATS to yesterdays racers!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats to the racers! Lisa, I couldn't help wondering after reading your post, how well you would have done without the contact problems! What a great accomplishment! Steve, your place is always well deserved, almost expectted at this point (which probably isn't fair, I know.) Anyway, congrats to you both, and Ryan too. Sounds like all had a great day. |
